well, a remote diagnosis is always difficult, but maybe false air is an issue, since the carburetor worked on the other engine... I would tighten all the relevant screws in the intake tract and cylinder area on the new engine, ... good luck ... !

I'm no mechanic but glad you are alive. he 1986 Honda 3 wheeler Big Red that we used, well it is still being used, had the same sort of problem. Bought an after market carb and silved problem. Still have the original and no doubt it just needs a serious cleaning. Have not done that as it got passed down to next generation and maybe they have by now. Maybe some trash of some sort got in the carb busted loose from all of the activities the "Step Brothers" might say. Be safe. You are pressing the old timers area in collective years.

Check fueling, clean carb jets well. Did your off lossen some thing in fuel tank and lodge in outlet hole. My 4 wheeler sat for long time, tried starting and did same start on choke then die, cleaned old fuel and ran good.

Blocked jet perhaps? If only running on choke surely that means the air is excluded and more fuel is allowed in ( just enough to start but not run ) Gasket leak allowing too much air in?

Idle jet in carb blocked or no hole 🕳️ or faulty carb

Sometimes them smaller carbs are impossible to make work,I’m convinced the problem lay in the air passages,I’m going to try drilling out slightly oversized !
