Boat Friends,
Step aboard the 1000-foot Great Lakes ship, American Century, in this exclusive Part 2 of my series “Life Aboard a Great Lakes Ship,” recorded on September 12, 2024. Get up close to the dock and witness the crew in action, securing this massive vessel just feet from the camera! Ever wondered how many steps it takes to walk from the stern to the bow of a 1000-foot ship? I’ve got the answer with a pedometer test that measures every step on this incredible freighter.
Experience an up-close look at the powerful self-unloading boom, explore the workings of the bow thruster in action, and see the dual bow anchors looking huge. I captured these moments from onboard the ship, on shore, and on my own boat, providing unique perspectives that bring you closer than ever to the action.
One of the most poignant moments is a look at the dock where the ship Edmund Fitzgerald took its final load before the tragic storm on Lake Superior. I bring you views from the American Century's deck and from the water, offering a rare glimpse into maritime history.
This video not only showcases the hard work and camaraderie of the crew but also gives a behind-the-scenes look at life on the Great Lakes, from safety protocols to the incredible machinery that keeps these ships running smoothly. If you've ever dreamed of being a part of something vast and powerful, this is your front-row seat to life on a Great Lakes freighter.
Watch for:
-The exact step count from stern to bow on a 1000-foot ship
-The professional crew at work, handling lines and navigating the waters
-A rare view of the historic Edmund Fitzgerald's final dock

Thank you Mike. I hope you realize the impact your channel has. I had zero knowledge of, or interest in ships prior to stumbling upon your videos. My maritime experience consisted of Jon boats and bass boats growing up on the New river, and Claytor lake in Virginia. Thanks to you, I long for the day to crew a 1000 footer on the Great Lakes. I'm hooked, and am a Boat Friend for life. Thank you.

Jaybird, thank you so much for the positive comment and for being part of this channel. I’m really glad you’re enjoying the content. Like I always say, I’m just a guy with a camera hitting record, and the ships do all the work. We get to have fun watching and learning about them together. This channel is all about positivity and building a community. It's truly people like you, and all our Boat Friends around the world, that make this channel what it is. Thanks again for your great comment and for being a part of what we do together!👍⛴️

I couldn’t agree more. I never knew a thing about the ships on the lakes until I found this channel. Now I’m oddly fascinated and drive a few hours north all the time to watch them when I backpack and camp. The history is another thing I can’t stop diving into. The ship wreck sites are fantastic to see too.

When I go out to record these ships, I always hope that the videos bring joy and a bit of excitement to everyone watching, and knowing that my videos helped you during your recovery is incredibly impactful. It’s comments like yours that remind me why I do this and give me the push to keep going out there and creating content that’s fun and engaging. I try my best to tell a story with each video, even if I talk a little too much sometimes! It’s all about making the experience enjoyable and sharing the beauty and history of these ships in a way that connects with people. Other than being there in person, this is the closest thing to actually feeling the hulking size of this magnificent work horse. Hey NSS, Thank you so much for sharing that. Captain Bruce must have been an incredible person, and it’s clear he made a huge impact on those around him. I did some digging and learned that Captain Bruce was known not just for his skill and leadership but also for his kindness and the way he treated everyone on board like family. He had a way of making the ship feel like home for the crew, and his legacy truly lives on through the American Century. His dedication and passion for sailing were admired by everyone who had the privilege of working with him. We will never forget Captain Bruce and the way he made such a positive mark on the lives of those around him and on the ship itself. The American Century will always carry a part of his spirit with every journey it makes. Thank you for sharing your memories of him and for being a part of this channel. Your connection to the Century and Captain Bruce is truly special, and we are all honored to have you here!

Here is something neat. If you start watching at 8:15 you'll see an orange vertically stripped tower in the water. Now carefully look off in the distance amidst the trees. You'll see another orange vertical marker. When navigating towards these markers, the captain lines both them up until one gets placed in front of the other. When this happens, it means the ship is safely in the channel. It's called a range. In this case, the range is setup to allow another ship to pass in the other direction.

This video had so much substance; it was jam-packed. Very informative, covering the actual nuts and bolts, the inner workings of the ship, and behind-the-scenes stuff, such as how long and how many steps from stern to bow. It also covered the various docks in the area and the choppiness of the water outside of the harbor. Top flight reporting and journalism.

Hey Friend! Thank you so much for your kind words on my video. Your positivity truly makes all the effort worthwhile. It's amazing to connect with fellow ship enthusiasts who appreciate the details and behind-the-scenes aspects as much as I do. Hearing that you enjoyed the nuts and bolts of the ship and the unique views of the docks and water conditions means a lot to me. Your support and enthusiasm inspire me to keep exploring and sharing these incredible stories of the Great Lakes. It's great to think that even from Arizona, where vast deserts stretch as far as the eye can see, there are folks like us who are captivated by the majesty of these big ships. It's a reminder that no matter where we are, our love for the Great Lakes connects us across the miles. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, surrounded by the warmth of the Arizona sun, with the spirit of these ships sailing along with you. All the best Boat Friends!

Especially refreshing to see a truly professional company like ASC showing off one of their best ships and crew. WHAT a day! I was so excited to see that you were “taking us” on an ASL ship! I KNOW one is not supposed to use exclamation points and Capital Letters but that is how I speak when excited. We would never get to experience this if not for you, Mike. Walking a 1000 foot ship from stern to bow,😊 being able to see up close the hatch covers secured and unsecured, seeing the view from that height, as well as the last dock to serve the Edmund Fitzgerald are things outside the realm of what I might ever experience. Even though I live on the East Coast of New Jersey, where I am there are small Fishing Boats, nothing the expanse of the Freighters. I’ve not cared about much to do with Maritime concerns but thanks to you, I have a new interest. Thank you to American Steamship Lines for THEIR interest in giving us these experiences. I’m anxiously awaiting Kevin’s visit and the information he will impart. Thanks again, Mike.

Your excitement is absolutely contagious and I’m so glad you’re loving the journey aboard the ASC ship it’s incredible to be able to take you along to walk the length of a 1000-foot freighter see those hatch covers in action and take in the amazing views from up top it’s not something you get to experience every day especially when you’re used to the fishing boats over in New Jersey. Huge thanks to American Steamship Company for opening up their world and making these moments possible and it’s awesome to hear you’re looking forward to Dave’s (A really good guy!) visit I’m sure he’ll have some great insights to share too I’m really grateful for your enthusiasm and support and can’t wait to keep bringing more of these adventures your way thanks for being a part of this journey! What's up man! It’s awesome to see your excitement about the American Century she really is a massive vessel and seeing her at 12 feet really puts her size into perspective that ladder is no joke with 435 steps from front to back. It’s a tough climb but the reward is being able to share these moments with you. I’m truly grateful to ASC and their crew for giving us this inside look at their world and I’m glad to be your eyes out there on the water. I did some research and found some interesting connections between South Africa and Great Lakes shipping South Africa plays a key role in global maritime trade with major ports like Durban (legit port) and Cape Town that handle goods traveling to and from North America and even through the Great Lakes system sometimes South Africa is a major exporter of minerals and metals and these goods often travel by sea up through the Atlantic through the St . Lawrence Seaway and right into the Great Lakes, it’s amazing to think that the cargo from your ports could end up on ships we might see, really cool how our worlds connect hope you’re having an awesome weekend and thanks for being part of this journey Bro! Mike it is great to see the American Steamship company appreciates your very positive videos of this ship, their ships, and all the other working ships on the great lakes. These are the huge bulk carriers that move the iron ore from the Duluth area to the steel mills far away near the lower great lakes. It is wonderful to see this great iron ore moving ship close up with Mike. I have also seen videos of people seamen and officers that work on these huge ships all over the world as a profession. Many of these people will move from the ocean traffic around the world to take a contract to work on a ship on the great lakes for months at a time. Then they can take a contract in Singapore with another ship traveling the oceans for months. It is not easy work and required well trained people who know how to do their jobs on these ships. I believe they work only 4 hours on and 4 off, then 4 hours on each day. They will work the same 4 hours on, 4 off, and 4 on through the night. These ships work 24 hours a day 7 days a week. They never stop someone has to be on duty every minute of every day. I believe the great thing about these jobs of seamen and officers at sea is they can have a month or months off between work contracts at sea.

Hi Mike Yes we worked in the winter. Mostly on the bows and that was at the front of the dry dock and the wind came up the river from the lake. The other fun days where in the rain. Building those ships was very different every day. Sometimes hanging on the side shell pre heating for the welders or just cutting them in to be welded.. There are many places people don't see but I was in most of them. Again thank you for everything you do.

Gerald, brother! Your comment really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing your story and for being part of the incredible work that goes into building Great Lakes ships. We have so much respect for the dedication and skill that you and others bring to the industry. Working in tough conditions like the cold winds and rain shows how committed you all are, and it’s clear that building these ships involves a lot more than most people realize. Your hard work makes these vessels not just impressive but truly remarkable. We’re grateful for the chance to hear about your experiences, from handling the preheating for welders to working in the hidden parts of the ships. It’s people like you who make it possible for us to enjoy watching these ships in action today. Your craftsmanship and commitment have shaped the industry into what it is, and it’s an honor for us to share and celebrate that through our videos. We want to thank you and everyone who has worked behind the scenes to build these amazing ships. It’s easy to admire the beauty of the ships, but it’s the efforts of people like you that make them so special. We appreciate all that you’ve done, and it’s wonderful to have you as part of this community. Your dedication is truly valued, and we’re thankful for your contribution to the world of Great Lakes shipping.👍⛴️🙏👋

Thanks, Mike! One of the things that caught my attention was just how shallow the depth of the water was so close to the ship. On your boat, you were in about 12 feet of water and only 100-200 feet away from the AC. When the ship is loaded, its draft will be around 28 feet. Is there a fairly narrow channel through the harbor for the lakers to navigate through? There doesn't seem to be much wiggle room to maneuver the ship up to or away from the dock.
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 9 күн бұрын
That particular dock is all set up for ship that is completely light and empty. Very good attention to detail! I thought about that as well looking how the draft was. It was around 11 feet. That’s amazing. They are fully loaded. There is a specific channel for them to stay on so they don’t ground out.⛴️👍

@@vibewithmikeI like to pull up electronic marine charts. Check out Marineways. www.marineways.com/ If 6:56 you zoom in to the area around the Pipehead dock, you will see that immediate area is amplely dredged. And you can see the harbor depth and the narrow buoyed channel depth from Superior to Duluth. Mike's 12 foot depth was just outside the shipping channel. They also have a mobile app.

Couple of questions actually. #1 did the fitz have the same kind of hatch cover clamps? If so how did they fail? #2 does your pedometer count steps or paces? #3 are you gonna watch the wild prospects this weekend? I'm really glad to see you're having a great time buddy. Can't wait to see you out on the big blue 😁
@vibewithmike
@vibewithmike 8 күн бұрын
Hey Boat Friend! It's great to hear from you, and I really appreciate you taking the extra time to leave a comment. So, about the Fitzgerald, yes, it did have the same kind of hatch cover clamps. One theory suggests that the clamps might have loosened in the rough weather, letting water in through the hatches, which could’ve been a big factor in the sinking. Some people think the clamps just couldn’t hold up against the massive waves that were pounding the ship, but it's still a mystery, and everyone’s got their own ideas on what might’ve happened. My pedometer counts steps, not paces, but it keeps me moving no matter what. I’m definitely excited for the Wild this season; they've been really solid, especially with that impressive playoff run last year, and I think they’ve got a lot of potential to go even further. I’m looking forward to catching the prospects this weekend; it’s always great to see the future talent on the ice. Hope you have an awesome Saturday night out in St. Paul, and can’t wait to see you out on the big blue soon!

@@vibewithmike thanks for the reply buddy. Your theory sounds good to me about the clamps. I've heard people in the navy feared mother nature waaaay more than being shot at. Multiple youtubers claim the wild are in the process of building a powerhouse. My buddy from mama's pizza says he hung out with Brock Faber the other night. He's looking strong and ready for the season. Which is great news.
