Next time you do up clams, put your clams in some water just cover them a little ,then sprinkle corm meal on the top . Clams will take up the corn meal and empty all the sand in side and bing-go the bellies are sweet with the corn meal .

Fly killer juice. I go camping in Australia, and when the grass or wheat is in flower, the flies alight on one's shirt and try to get moisture, so I give them a piece of cotton cloth stretched between two posts or mounted on a wooden or metal frame , and I soak it in a mixture of sugar, gelatine, a little alcohol to preserve the mix, and a little fish oil. The whole lot is mixed with a little contact insecticide solution such as a paint-on or spray on type, and I keep it all in a water spray bottle. The flies swarm all over the wet cloth drinking up the goo, drop off in a few minutes, to be replaced by others. If the system is rigged so that a bottle of the tasty stuff stuff drips onto the cloth in several places from a pipe stapled or zip-tied along the top of the cloth, the flies will go to it as a priority and less of them will bother you. By the end of the day there will be a carpet of dead flies under the cloth. Lotsa luck.

Those iridium go's seem to "crap out" on people somewhat frequently. Sailing Florence had issues with theirs crossing the Atlantic going East, Ryan and Sofia's one craped out between Cape Verde and the Bahamas, and if I remember correctly, Martin on Sailing Jambo had his replaced too. Not cheap either are they.

I haven't seen anyone use the dual whisker poles that Kirsten Neuschafer of the GGR used when she sailed around the world. She used two and as a solo could handle them in rough seas, she called them TWIN and I think it was a foresail ? There is a video, search " Javelin Sailboat Twin Spinnaker Pole System" that is really cool. She sailed the south sea route nonstop and its really rough so she broke one whisker pole. Wow, I wonder how much bacon is in French Polynesia ?

I just love your productions! it's like being there. I have a question: you folks don't use the V berth much it seems, but the salon settees are used as sleeping areas almost permanently. If you were refurbishing a 1980's boat, would you do away with the v-berth and use a huge mattress as a salon and a bed? The old boats were furnished so conservatiovely it makes me want to go Turkish. Free lounging. thoughts?
@BeauAndBrandy Жыл бұрын
thank you so much. we do actually use the vberth on anchor. Typically we only sleep in the salon underway. We prefer having a table to work on our computers, and our space is so small we have to climb over the salon bed to go forward and aft when its converted. but dan and kika on sailing uma did something like you are speaking about on their pearson.

@@BeauAndBrandy hey folks, merry Xmas and wishing you both a terrific and interesting 2024. Thank you for your response to my question regarding sleeping arrangements passage making and on the hook. In all likelihood , my boat will accommodate one person only. Mine is a pocket cruiser of 36 feet, late 1970s vintage in terms of hull shape, ie narrow beam with a pinched stern and bow. It’s gutted now. I’ve seen boaters with midships double berths running port to starboard that convert to two small settees, like love seats we see for couches onshore. One dog, one cat and one sailer is the plan. Wife occasionally. Four for meals, six for drinks, two sleeping on the hook versus seven sleeping berths as it was a training vessel originally. The original configuration left nothing valued in terms of footage for galley or head. Yup, boats are a floating compromise. The Bestevear 36 is an influencer for me in certain aspects . Most sailers are single men. So the design approach can reduce the seating room while providing a v-berth and a single berth in the salon. Any thoughts? Seen one?

I spent the first part of the video wondering why you had no main up. I still don't know - it made no sense to me. The boat is always faster and easier with both main and headsail wing and wing because it's balanced so will be easier to steer, less rudder drag and load on the autopilot. You can phle the headsail out on the same side as the main if it's more of a reach. You know you can fly the assymetric spinnaker from the pole right? Hoist it as normal with an adjustable longish tack line, then rig a guy through the pole to the tack and work the tack out to the pole end. To gybe put the tack back on the bow and take the pole down.
@BeauAndBrandy Жыл бұрын
Because we were on a broad reach with light wind for most of the sail until we did indeed run wing on wing. Also as we mentioned in the video, we only have a symmetrical spinnaker.
