An excerpt from Neil's book 'Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization.' Should we live forever? What happens to us after we die? What is the statistical probability of being alive? Tyson exercises mathematical prowess and scientific eloquence to grapple with questions that have plagued humankind since its humble beginnings. Taking a cosmic perspective on civilization not only helps us understand where we are but shows us the path forward.

hey Niel, I just wanted to ask, why is it impossible to reach 0 kelvin? bc we would need an infinite amount of "other cold" to do so? haha well, ive thought of an even better idea, so HOW ABOUT we just build a box that can support 15psi, then use a powerful vacuum to suck all the air out, if theirs nothing in the box, then theirs nothing to really be effected by the temprature, theirs nothing to VIBRATE AT ALL so would that not mean infinite cold? (pardon my spelling)

This is always my goto tactic when dealing with unreasonable theists who simply can't accept that yes... Just like Everything Else...We Die! Another one I used is... If you did live forever... Surely you'd get bored after the first few 1000 years or so... That one always stumps them! Honestly, as Neil put it, this notion of living 'forever' isn't really about that at all. But simply about the fear of Death itself. Even though this is a Natural process which will simply 'return' us to a state of non-existence, prior to our conception.

@@blackpebble1911 Because the idea of a creator is too fantastical and has no hard evidence to back it up. And the existence of a creator would just open more questions. Where did they come from? What would be the point of doing anything or even getting out of bed in the morning? Religion was made to give people a sense of peace and something to look forward too. It’s a comfort thing. Spend time reading the gospels and you'll find real life and eternal life. The same power that rose Jesus from the grave will raise us up as Jesus promised. Neils view is depressing and if it's true it would mean that life means nothing. But we were created by God for a purpose. There is plenty of evidence for Jesus and that He is the truth. Neil knows the stars and our galaxy but not life Faith hope and love will remain and God and us live/love eternally by His power. Space time and matter will come to an end. Turning 42 this year and approaching the half way point of my life, I sought out Neil’s perspective of life and death. I found everything he said to be vastly accurate. His message fills me with a sense of dread and caution at the fragility and astronomical odds of being born into this life, after billions of years of non-existence. Yet he also fills me with hope and a sense of action to make the most of my circumstances and to make every day in this life count.

I do not fear death because I died for 22 minutes 40 years ago. I had just gone through a very dangerous back surgery. They had just turned me over. I saw the heart monitor flatline. Then I felt myself rise from body. I stood there watching my doctors and then I was gone. I did not see anything- but I felt harmony for the first time in my life. I was told it wasn’t my time yet. I could stay if I wanted too. If I wanted to return I needed to think of someone I loved- I thought of my children- then I opened my eyes and the heart monitor began to register. My doctors were crying and speaking Hebrew. They told me I had been dead for 22 minutes. Since my horrible soon to be ex- husband had a DNR my doctors had just prayed over me. I learned a valuable lesson that day. Never take a moment for granted and never underestimate the power of life. Do not fear death. Love life and explore everything you can to become the best you can be. I am 70 now. Life is precious and is meant to be loved and explored. We are so much more than we can imagine.

Well, what about MULTIPLE SENSOR READINGS< independent radar AND multiple witnesses, all at the same time, bro! Last government report in front of congress, says the military sightings over the atlantic and pacific were on MULTIPLE sensor readings, AND multiple witnesses, at the same time. How the heck can you dismiss that as a sensor malfunction, simply making a proclamation with out investigating? Looks like its YOU WHO FEARS the unknown! Make a video about who these ufo's are and what purpose do they present for humans? It's apparent now that 10 to the 30 power , or whatever that number is, is also the chances of life turning into intelligent life, that ends up traveling thru space/time. Perhaps that is where our lives are going, to strive to be better and better and improve everything we use, until we can travel and search for other intelligent beings. My fear of death comes from the fact that all of it will be gone, forever. I’ll never get to experience life again for the rest of eternity. I won’t be aware of anything anymore. I don’t really know how to put it in words. Experiencing life, my consciousness, is all I have. It’s the only thing I understand. To lose that for the rest of eternity one day is just terrifying to me.

I love this. As i’m getting older I’m more and more seeing life as precious and unique, but also more and more impatient with those who take it for granted and are caught up in their petty problems. Of course, I have my own problems as well like everybody else but I try to never give more importance to them then to the idea that the life I lead is precious, uneventful as it might be. I get to work, I get to draw, I get to listen to music, I get to travel, I get to read, I get to play games, I get to collect action figures, I get to eat great food, I get to know love, I get to know great people…. and that makes me feel like a very lucky man, not just compared to others that might have it worse, but just on a grander scale too, as in: I get to be here. I wish more people felt happy and lucky about everything they get, instead of wasting their lives on being angry over what they don’t have.

If I was 3 years younger today I’d probably ignore you Thinking life is just an easy way for everyone to get enjoyment off of torturing you and then giving you pleasures that they use for their amusement when they take it all away That life is a way for you to feel torture and that death even if it leads to non existence is better Now I am horrified that I thought that way and the fact that I could’ve died believing that I could’ve died not drawing, not writing, not seeing, not feeling and not experiencing anything I’ve chivied at this point In the future I hope I’ll think again “oh my god, if I died back then I wouldn’t have made this many things and I’d only be remembered as a child with no reason to die but jumping off the building anyway”

I think we need to have more open, transparent, honest conversations about death. Not just as adults but with our children in a way we're it's isn't this frightening thing but as a motivation to live free and less hesitant as none of us truly know what is to happen once this body fulfills its earthly duties. Once we become more comfortable with the inevitable you'll make more decisions with that awareness in mind and the objective you have for your life while here (idk if they'll be right or wrong).

I would like to live forever, not because I fear death, because I love life. I enjoy doing, learning, seeing, feeling, and loving. The thought of dying doesn't bother me and I'm aware that, once I'm gone, I won't miss the things I enjoy.

I read somewhere recently we are the sum total of all of those who come before us. I used to fear death with all of my being, but life has shown me that death is not something to be feared, only accepted. What I am struggling with now is the sad fact that I only know my families history through the early 1900's. I wonder about those who came before me, and hope that by reaching out to the elders in my family I can learn more about that piece of my personal history.

I don't how anyone can see this man as intelligent by any means. Especially his views on religion. What is happening now is Daniel, Ezekiel, Revelations and Romans 1, the people given over to their foolishness. Science has mad nothing new that was already on the earth God created.

@@mackenzielamb6513 you mean like unstable atoms and isotopes? Lmao. Generally speaking science explains what was here, regardless where it came from. Please preach your personal faith elsewhere, perhaps among those that share your beliefs. Science isn't obligated to care about feelings or personal beliefs. Enjoy the sentiment of this lovely video for what it is.

@@MattIsntYoung you can't enjoy misinformation. Science only explains what was here not when or how accuratly. And only points to God's existence and creation. That ideology is like knowing you're here but not caring you came from your parents. It matters because we are created. There isn't an evolutionary theory you can give me that can't be debunked or reversed or explained through Gods word or creation.

To fear death is to be human. Ironic however that for most of our lives we subconsciously make efforts to forget or ignore that we are human, that we must come to an end. To really appreciate life, however, we have to stop and think about our mortality. If we all did that more often, what a wonderful world it would be.

We lost an unborn daughter in 2020. I believe that when my time ends here I will meet her. It is the hardest thing I could ever go through in this lifetime and because of it, I live with appreciation of the smallest of daily victories. I enjoy my time more, I am less afraid of everything, and do not fear dying at all. I look forward to holding my daughters hand one day.

The sheer profoundness of this is beyond my comprehension. I can only hope that my daughter will look at the amazing beauty and wonder of this amazing place we call home. I can only dream of having the abilities to charm the ears of listeners like this. The wonders of life and this universe have all but filled my mind with something I can’t even describe. A wonder beyond words. An amazement beyond the horizon. This life is a gift that I intend to try to make the most of. Please my daughter, if you ever read this, make life all it can be. Learn all you can learn. Do not ever believe without evidence. Do not take life for granted. Do not harm others for your benefit. Do not be the bad in this world. Be the good. Be the educator. Be the light, in the inevitable darkness. I must now go read Carl Sagan speak of the pale blue dot…. Thanks to the man I will never meet. The man that did his best to make me dream. The man that made my brain go beyond what was ever intended for such a measly intellectual. Neil deGrasse Tyson you have taken over the leading role of Mr. Sagan so well over the years. To be able to put such awe in the eyes of only a high school educated individual is beyond talent. It is godlike. Thank you. Thank you. The minuscule understanding I have of the wonders of the universe and the wonders of life, I owe solely to you and Mr. Sagan. Not only did he have, but you also have the ability to speak to mere mortals like me. That ability to enlighten us with the knowledge that only a very few can possess. That ability to present in such a way, that anyone with any interest can feel as if they are the world renowned astrophysicist of the day. Thank you.
