A destroyer is nothing without the Sailors who work, eat, sleep and live on her decks. Those who serve aboard the USS Momsen, an Arleigh Burke-Class Destroyer, do it with immense pride. Experience life aboard the “Lucky Swede” and find out more about serving with these Sailors at bit.ly/2O8skzo.

I spent six months rebuilding this ship in 2009 when it had a refit. That M2 they were shooting on the starboard helo deck, I was part of the crew that welded in the mounts for that, as well as the port side, kinda cool to see a gun on it finally. I know every inch of that boat, I've been inside the exhaust manifold from top to bottom, in just about every cabin including the captain's quarters, I pulled apart and rebuilt the number 2 diesel generator, installed ventilation ducting, and I also drilled a _lot_ of holes all over that ship (I was what's called an outdoor machinist, someone who does alignments/drills mounting holes for equipement, aligns shafts, that sort of thing, but I did everything else I was needed to do including firewatch). Got to see a lot of cool tech while I was there, Navy boats have an incredible assortment of technology aboard, like the CIWS anti-air systems, or their sonobouy systems for extended underwater detection capabilities. I didn't get to muck around with their missile launchers much, but I'm sure there's a reason for that lol. Also spent three months (more hours in that three months than the six months on the Momsen though, we were doing 7 13 hour shifts for three months straight. I had four days off that entire time, it was _awful_ lol) on the Abraham Lincoln, where I had to trace about 30 miles of electrical wiring and correctly tag each wire with an aluminum number plate, since the previous contractor who got the job underbid the job by 20,000 man hours and went bankrupt after they couldn't finish it, so we picked up the contract. Awful job there, that job turned me into an alcoholic lol (would actually be funny if it weren't the truth🙄). Also drilled mounting holes for extra life rafts on the front of the aircraft deck near the launch system. Standing on the deck of a carrier and seeing hundreds of yards of flat steel is a real trip, especially when you realise you're on a boat. Kind of a surreal experience...

Burke Class DDG's don't have diesel generators. They (at least the Flight IIa like the Momsen) have three Allison 2500 KW gas turbine generators. (with the upcoming Flight III having 4000 KW generators to provide electricity to the new electronics) What do I know about her? I saw the Momsen for the first time early August 2003 when I flew from San Diego to Maine for her Christening, then drove to Maine from San Diego in November 2003 as an early part of her pre-commissioning crew. I was the last Sailor to leave dry land before she sailed away in June 2004 and I finally transferred from her in August 2007 headed to my next command. I've been in every compartment on her, from the shaft alleys to the top of the mast and in all the classified spaces (I worked in the Tomahawk Equipment room) and stood watch in either CIC or CSMC as CSOOW. Yeah, she's special to me, and I believe that I can say the same about the rest of her Plankowners!

@@dundonrl Actually, you're right, my time spent on the Ford and Davis (or Gayvis as all the other sailors called it, since that's where the Navy decided to put all the homosexual sailors at the time, better in one place with each other than spread throughout the fleet, lol) was blending in with my time on the Momsen and Shoup, and yes you are correct, the DDG's had gas turbine generators, while the FFG's had the diesel generators (Ford had Caterpillar motors and the Davis had Allisons if I'm not mistaken). Thanks for your service friend, I'm glad you got to enjoy these fine vessels as well. Momsen was special to me since we spent the most time aboard her, I did a lot of work to that vessel.

I was lucky enough to go on a Tiger cruise in 2016 aboard the Lassen at the invitation of my brother LTJG Maddox, did you happen to know him? It was the single greatest experience I've ever had, getting to see what y'all do. Gorgeous ship as well, and what a crew.

Ship station is the best assignment one can have if not married. Travel free, and seeing open space and closed society very nice and now even had more female sailors make it more interesting and less nutty

Does it still have the RMS on it? I am building a model of it and in recent photos of it seems to indicate that the RMS access has a metal plate welded across it. If so, when was it deleted? TIA
