You are going well guys, especially Hannah on her first big ocean sail ... the miles are telling you that NZ is not that far away now, along with the need for a blanket now and then plus plenty of cloud, squalls, good reliable winds and variable seas lol, and yes, I know you have been and gone ... One imagines that there will be a few variations relating to piddling on the move. I have sailed a little in roughish conditions and sometimes its not so easy for the guys as well, you have to hold on with one hand, keep the toilet seat up with a spare knee and the other hand has to hold onto something else to keep the piddle going in the direction that it is supposed to be going lol

Hannah has definitely risen to the challenge-she’s been a trooper! And you nailed it with the piddling situation! 😂 It’s a whole circus act out there sometimes! Holding on while trying to aim is a true test of sailing skills!

One thing about being a sailor, expect to have bruises, it has to be especially frustrating getting bruised while just trying to pee... lol I noticed Hannah had her hair down for a little bit, that must have been the 15 minutes of calmer seas that you had, it's a damn good thing you get to visit such beautiful places after some of the rough rides you have!

Those random bruises just become part of the sailing life-especially when you're trying to do the simplest things like, you know, pee! 🤦‍♀️ And yes, Hannah was enjoying that brief moment of calm... it didn’t last long! I had a thought (not sure how it would work but....) Many years ago ( 1965 while in the Marine Corps we went from South Caroline to Subic Bay in a world war 2 LST (landing ship tank, the ones my have have seen that run right up to the shore and lower the front end (ramp) and drive tanks off). In order to do this the ship MUST have a flat bottom to get close enough to shore. As a sailor you are certainly aware of the issues with a flat bottom boat (not very stable and bounce around a LOT.) Well on that trip we had the pleasure (?) of the outer rim of a hurricane in route. The fully loaded LST with Navy staff and half a dozen full size tanks in the tank bay as well as a full compliment of Marines it got REAL bouncy. To see how much roll there was we would sit on the open deck on port side (or starboard) and watch and count how long it took the other side to go from lowest point through the horizon to the highest point above the horizon. So,, since it is hard show how much you roll on camera . Here is a suggestion. Lash a pole across hear the bow on top of the safety guards sideways. film from the cockpit at about the same level as the pole forward and watch the ends of the pole rise and drop across the horizon. (of course the longer each delay below horizontal to above the horizon the the bigger the roll is). Might work and show on film the amount of roll?

Love your idea for capturing the roll! It’s always tricky capturing just how much movement we’re dealing with on camera, but that might be a great way to really give viewers a sense of it. We were all wanting a break from the rocking and rolling at some point on this passage! We never had another boat pass us within view and never received any calls on the vhf but when we arrived in Opua a couple of the bigger catamarans were already there!

I’m not much of a sailor but recently my young son and I have been doing a deep dive on the anatomy of a 16 century ship of the line, The Flagship Victory the last ship in Lord H Nelson command, won the battle of Trafalgar and lost his life on the same day. Just the number of sails on a ship like Victory. She is still the oldest commissioned ship in Britain.

Loving It!.....Hey, just an idea, can the plastic trash be incorporated into concrete and sunk for new reef systems? I'm sure there is some reason that won't work but it just popped in my head. Because of the Old sea dog, Delos, Uma and you guys, I keep staring at all the used 2000s Island packets that have been for sale here around Port Angeles and Seattle. If publisher's clearing house were to come here,..........I would be setting sail for the trades in weeks. Thanks for being inspirational!.

Thanks, Mike! That's a really interesting idea about using plastic trash in concrete for reefs or maybe even mooring systems! There are definitely some innovative projects out there exploring lots of different concepts. It’s awesome to hear that we’re inspiring you to consider sailing-those Island Packets are great boats! I enjoy your videos because what you show seems to me to be more realistic in daily life while making a several hundred NM crossing. I'm not saying that other sailors fake anything but I see a lot of "fluff" in their attempts to make it more interesting. I feel that I am experiencing everything that is going on. I don't have to try to see through the fluff.

How much do y'all estimate your autopilot is drawing in a full 24 hours at sea in swellier than moderate conditions like you've experienced here? Thanks for sharing!

Great question but unfortunately I don't have an exact answer for you on that. The power draw of our hydraulic drive is significantly greater than the old linear electric-mechanical drive that we had. I'd ballpark it at something like 100AH per day (12V system) for the autopilot but it is extremely dependent on wind/wave size and directions.

Over time, you begin to adjust to the noises and the movement of the boat and become comfortable enough to catch some sleep.
