Love this, absolute respect because this is the way we should view all prisoners no matter the situation. If we take hope away for good then we do nothing but desensitise and dehumanise people even further and this cannot have a good outcome for anyone. There needs to be hope that something is better than what has occurred. As humans we always hope for better we can’t just shut people out and cast them from society there needs to be a program for criminals of all levels to earn their place back in society. Otherwise what’s the point. We’re happy to just keep spending hundreds of thousands / millions on prison systems that don’t work. We need programs we need boot camps we need army pathways etc something needs to change for the better

Addictions are a truly a terrible scourge. Knew a bunch of people addicted to substances in my youth, out of those I think only one managed to get a clean cut, a person of extraordinarily strong willpower. I myself have been working with "problem kids" for years, and even understanding them better than most people, even trying your very best...you can't help all of them. And it sucks. Every time. It is not like most of the ones we couldn't help were do-no-goods either, or malicious or lazy... Many of them genuinely were frankly too broken. So very young, yet many never have the chance to truly live. Not a fan of capital punishment...but in a way I understand why SP cracks down so hard on drugs.

Do I believe he wants to change? Yes. But will I believe that he is really going to change? No. Until he shows everyone he's really going to do it. People in the comment section saying he ONLY needs people around him who believes he will change for him to really do it aren't exactly right. Yes, he needs people to believe him but it isn't only that. What's the use of rehab and believing in him if he won't control his urges. He's no longer a kid. He knows what's right from wrong. I know someone who suffered from addiction and he didn't even need to go to rehab for him to change. His family and friends believed in him but that didn't make him change. He continued abusing drugs until they left him. That was the turning point for him. He knew he was losing family and friends because of drugs and if he wanted to have them back, he knew he had to change. And so he did.

You cannot call it rehabilitation when you only offer a "slew" of programmes towards the tail end of their sentence, which is about 8 months max. These people are locked up for years, and then you expect them to catch up in 8 months? The majority of prisoners sit idle for a huge chunk of their sentence. The ones who get to further their studies, have work duty, or got on some kind of mentored programmes are in the minority, it's not an equal opportunity thing that the masses were lead to believe. I am rooting for this gentleman, but I also know that his life was being taken away over a non violent crime, if you can even call addiction a crime, for way too long than necessary, and whatever our prison system think they're doing to help these inmates to live life outside is actually little to no help at all.

You need to believe in yourself first Mr. Poh Lim. If you keep coming back that means you have not trained yourself hard enough to resist temptation. You and only you can make that change. No amount of counselling or support can stop you from self destruction which is what you are doing when you take drugs. It does not matter whether people believe or not believe you. Don't waste your time thinking about that. Learn to control your mind and your body and control what you put into your body. Life is short - you do not have much time left. I say this because I was born in Singapore - my parents were dirt poor. So poor that I have to drop out of school to get a job to help them. Fast forward 50 years, I got myself out of that situation by following a path of humility, clean body, clean mind and spread good Karma. Just do it - don't talk.

In what way is prison productive or beneficial to society? Imagine a dog bit someone and you put it in a cage for a week then release it. What's changed? Nothing..
