I was raised on a farm so every fall we canned and put back food for the winter so I have just continued that way of thinking through my adult life. I am in Southeast Idaho and we are also in the drought and I hope and pray I will be able to get food to can this fall. I have a good food storage and we use it and rotate everything I save. Love your channel and encouragement!

The shortages last year woke me up to being better prepared. I was lucky in that I had extra money. As shelves filled back up, I began buying extra of flour, sugar, crisco, yeast, beans, pasta, canned goods, peanut butter, crackers, powdered drinks like kool aid, lemonade, milk, etc. I visited thrift stores and bought old pots and pans I could use on a grill, and found a coffee pot, too. I filled empty 2 liter soda bottles with water. I now have a very well stocked "larder" as it is called here in the south. (I also have bandaids, gauze, aspirin, alka seltzer, Tums, etc). I recommend everyone also store ZOTE bars of cleaning soap because they take up less room than a box of detergent. Come on people, clothes don't wash themselves, lol. Batteries, flashlights, candles and matches. Yes. I also feel that everything is very "unsettled". I no longer feel that security I used to feel just because I live in the US. I have lost confidence in our leaders. So I better be prepared to take care of me. Basics are important. Fluff is just fluff and I can get by without it in desperate times.

In Arizona we’re finally getting the monsoon rains this year…. I try not to worry about all the craziness going on these days & I limit the news I watch on the tv which helps. I try to be a good person & treat everyone the way I want to be treated. I wish everyone could do that! Also, I pray a lot, put your worries in God's hands & he will put peace in your hearts. 😇🥰

With food storage..and 7 kids, we survived the pandemic..and still have some. Just focus on what your family eats and start with the basics..I have a solid testimony of that!! Thansk for sharing that with everybody!! Dont get overwhelmed..

“Popcorn can fill an empty tummy.” I like that! Fresh food is obviously superior, but we always buy some canned food at the grocery store whether we need it at the time or not. A can of retried beans will look pretty good if you’re starving. Plus, you may have to help out other family members or neighbors during a difficult time. Just like saving only a few dollars a month is better than no savings at all, buying a couple extra cans of food every time you shop is beneficial.

We've been in a drought here in the upper midwest most of the summer and it's been hot! We gave up on the lawn, but kept watering the flowers and garden, which are all doing remarkably well. I'm glad we live in a rural area and have our own deep well. Fortunately, we got a good inch of rain over the weekend. What a relief it was to hear thunder and rain pattering on the roof! The trees and shrubs were especially thankful!

Yes Jennifer.. things are far from normal. I live in a small city in Ontario Canada and shelves at Walmart and never full. The clothing is very poor quality and not much of it. Many of our stores have closed for good due to the lockdowns. Even though we don't have many Covid cases, people are living like pre Covid. The anti Vaccinated people have gone mad protesting. I am very thank full that I am a very resourceful person and being thrifty in everyway it has served me well., I learned this from my parents.. It's the greatest gift they could have given me. Your channel is so wholesome and I do appreciate all that you shared with us. Thank you so much.

You're a wonderful woman Jennifer. The way you've been feeling would be so easy to change into self concern but your thoughts go to 'well how's everyone else doing' and I hugely admire that about you. A real wife and mother 💖 I live in Wales and we have a problem with delivery drivers and transportation at the moment but I don't worry. I can feed my son and myself for as long as needed and I'm proud to say there was nothing we did without during the pandemic as I've been raised to prepare and rely on myself too. Thank you Jennifer, you're an inspiration 🙏🏻❤

Don't forget about prayer. Find a quiet room or even a closet and speak with God in the name of His son, Jesus Christ :) We have at least a year's worth of food in our basement pantry. Rice, flour, canned meats and powered milk and powered fruit juices for vitamin C ... peanut butter and pasta. We did research on using mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and we're good to go. And again, the Lord will give us strength, courage and clarity of mind. All we have to do is ask :)

What are mylar bags and oxygen absorbers used for?
@celinasvahins7502
@celinasvahins7502 3 жыл бұрын
@@MissTXTee Both are used to preserve food freshness, particularly dry goods like flour and rice. Oxygen absorbers take the oxygen out of an air tight containerize that you create to store food, but they have to be used correctly or there could problems. Please do research before you begin, so you won't waste money. time or food :)

I’m so sorry about the drought your region is going through. I’m sure it hits hard knowing how badly it effects the crops with your farming background. I live in Maine and we’ve had a decent summer. More rain than we’d like actually, but not complaining. Our summers here are so short that we take what we can get for sun and heat. Love your family! Hope Aunt Linda is hanging in there and feeling well. ❤️

My family on both sides came from the poorest areas of the Appalachian mountains. They knew how to sustain. All thru the depression, they gardened and stored everything they could. I learned to can and preserve also. Nothing prettier than a mason jar full of food. In recent years I have begun canning meats also. It's amazing what you can preserve. If you save your seed it's practically free food. It's a great feeling of satisfaction to me to be able to self sustain.

I agree Jennifer, at my age (62) and growing up in a large family (of 8 children)and we didn’t have a lot.... Now with my husband retiring in the new year and with Covid, it has amped up my game in planning better for our future. I am no strange to the concept and you have nailed it! One never knows what we will need from one day to the next. I don’t stress over it at all but I do prepare for all things. I always have a stash of water but have added everything from toothpaste/deodorant to flour and yeast and everything in between. I had just told someone the other day that in a pinch we can eat and even share. It may not always be what you are craving but we won’t starve! Keep sharing your amazing content and I have to say I had to smile when you mentioned being young and passing notes in school....it took me back to a very different time. Love your channel! Stay well!

I was born & raised in the mid-Ohio valley. Gardens were plenty and staples were always what was raised or bought to fill cellars, cupboards, and freezers. Fast forward 45-50 years being married, after husbands job moved us to Texas. And life goes on. Our kids have been raised and now adults in Texas… this past winter we had a horrible “perfect storm” Arctic cold and the power grid shut down. Because We raised our kids the way I was raised, there was plenty to cook (gas stove) and make to get through that bad week!! AND I’m NOT a minimalist to the point that we still had extra blankets and old comforters. The rude awakening was all those around us that didn’t have enough basics!! Water, simple basic foods to feed their families etc. it broke my heart! Our pastor even asked us to start a little lesson to teach those around us to help ourselves out better and be able to help others.

I live in Alberta Canada. We are also in a drought situation but the wildfires are burning up our forest, fields and homes. Evacuations are happening all over. Covid has hit us hard with job losses and bankruptcy’s. We do have food storage and continue to replenish when we can but the last 2 years have been very difficult and with the grace of God we shall move forward. I wish I had the positive attitude that you have but I am worn down. Love watching your channel. I was born in Bountiful Utah and my family made the trek to the valley. One of my biggest fears in life is having one of my children say to me, “mom, I’m hungry” and not able to feed them in a catastrophe. I’ve tried to get one thing each month to build our supply. We have a cool dark storage room under our kitchen that works perfect for long term food storage. We have freeze dried foods, canned food, peanut butter, baking items, flour, water purifying straws, portable gas stove with extra gas, water bottles that are rotated, etc. I store it also under our bed and on the top shelves of our closet. When you run out of space, you have to get creative and under the bed usually works perfect!

Hi Jennifer I love your videos and how real you are about everything in our lives . I'm the oldest of 8 children and my parents struggled all the time but we never went hungry and my mom actually would put food in paper bags and we would take it to our neighbors that needed food as she canned alot of things and baked extra bread and goodies and always shared with people and I thank God for her love of people and her caring about them she made me what i am today a good giving loving lady and I miss her as she passed away 35 years ago and it's still like yesterday she left us. Thank you for being the sweet loving lady you are and I'm praying you get rain soon as I have a lawn that's not looking to good here in Massachusetts we did get alot of rain but now were like you not watering outside due to a drought . If only we could when we get rain be able to send it to where all those horrible fires are as the people have lost everything they owned. Sending hugs and love to you and Chad. 🤗❤ Maria

"And it came to pass" wonder phrase, life goes on, the circle continues good times and bad, we just need to trust in the Lord, and do our part to show our sincerity when we ask Him for His blessings. I heard about the town up there in UT that's almost out of water, Echo? I'm not sure. It made me think of the old film Windows of Heaven, about the drought then, and Lorenzo Snow visiting St. George. And the CFM where it talks about how we haven't truly appreciated what we've been given. Trees and grass come and go (or grow) but Faith will get us through. I'm down in Ca, and we just need to be grateful for what we have while we have it.

I was born in British Columbia, Canada and was so lucky to spent my childhood growing up on a vegetable farm where my parents grew 100's of acres of primarily carrots, onions and potatoes but aside from those main crops we also grew corn, cabbage, peas, zucchini etc. Growing up on a farm we never ran out of food because aside from the 'cash' crops we grew - my mom would can, pickle and make jams & jelly none stop. There wasn't anything she didn't preserve - from salmon to blackberry jam and brandied peaches to spaghetti sauce - our root cellar was always never empty.

I do agree with u ! I’m not a prepper I’m more of a prepared person . I’ve always kept back up on hand items , rotated dates and took advantage of sales on canned items etc. The Covid situation in Ohio is not good and dividing communities on mask wearing . It’s a sad situation , honestly I would rather try to stay safe then sorry . The weather is so hot here , a heat wave and the humidity is 73 o/o today , ugh . Makes it hard to breathe . Also I’m tired of being sweaty lol . This year has been a struggle for sure for everyone , but when put medical issues on top of it , it can be over whelming . I have Crohns and getting meds and treatments and hospital stays , well it can be scary . I’m glad u r feeling better and hope a light will shine soon at the end of the tunnel for everyone so we can live normally and enjoy our lives again . Thanks for your posts I always feel like I’m listening to a friend when I watch u .

I really like following you. You are so real and kind hearted. This year spring did not want to come for us here in Northern-Germany, it remained cold until late May. And then we right away got super hot weather for about 6 days in a row. The remaining summer we had rain, rain and a few nice summer days in between with only a little bit rain. And now it feels like Fall has started, cool temperatures. But why complain. Our children and addendum are healthy, we do alright. Our food storage should last us 2 -3 weeks. I hope to see our son and his pregnant new wife in November/December. They live in Florida and their baby girl is due December 1st. I miss them, I miss Virginia. We live in a wildfire area. Last year it got so dry and people are stupid. We were hours away from evacuation last year. We hunt. Every year. Deer , elk, turkey. We fish. Salmon and trout. We buy in bulk 1/2 a beef and pork. We grow a garden. We put up tomatos and freeze fresh vegetables. It just makes a person comfortable to have a few months if food. We have a well. So water isnt a big issue. When covid hit we did stock up on dry goods. Flour sugar salt canned chicken ect... its a good idea to know how to cook stuff from scratch. Make your own pasta or bread. Just KNOWING how in case of emergency.

This year has definitely been stressful for everyone! I tried CBD after being recommended by friends. It worked initially but then found it actually made me more anxious and on edge. Not sure why! So I stopped and have since tried ashwagandha. I've found that to be more gentle and a long-lasting calm that really takes the edge off. Anyway thanks for your wisdom! Always enjoy your videos.

Thank you so much for the information, my family and I also come from a pioneer heritage.. and when people see my storage room they say I'm a hoarder, i'm not it's very well organize. the one thing I do is write the date of everything I buy, so it's easy when I restock I just look at the bottom of any food item and I know what is to be used first. have you ever looked at a Berkey water filter purification system? they have them on Amazon. you can take bottle water and put it in the Berkey and it will take out all the contaminants that leches in to your water from the plastic.bottles.

I am in Central Utah. The drought and fires have been extreme this year. I have pressurized irrigation in my yard. We have been on water restrictions all season. Most have let their grass die, but have tried to keep vegetable gardens, trees and bushes alive. Our area is rural. High mountain desert. We still have irrigation water, we have a good water master who regulates it well. I dont know why or how our area in Manti is getting water. I know that when we moved here from Salt Lake City 16 years ago. We heard of a prophetic blessing from Brigham Young for this area. That we would always be blessed with what we need..I dont know how else to explain it. I am grateful each day I walk out and the water flows...we live in a time where all should be prepared...

Hi grandma griff! This video came up at such a good time for me. I’m recently pregnant with my second child and I’m feeling like I’m not gonna be able to handle it all, which together with some other pretty heavy stuff happening right now, is making me feel horribly anxious. Your videos always make me feel better and inspire me, thank you 💚

Thank you for sharing this with us in such a helpful way. Last year I began storage in our basement. As things got up busy, I hadn’t kept up. As of late, I had the feeling to get busy a little at a time building it up again. It sure feels better when you feel you are prepared a bit. Blessings to you all. ~ Laurie from Long Island ~

We have got to get back to being more self efficient. Figure out a small garden, by things when they are on sale. Freeze them, can them, dehydrate them. So much is out of our control, but we can take a tiny step towards independence.

Jennifer, You guys have probably thought about food storage for a long time because of your heritage. But this is something new to me since the pandemic. I am so glad I watch your family and now know what to be prepared for. Life is stressful ! We live in PA and the weather has been extremely hot, but the whole country has. More violence than ever before. I don't remember all of this as a kid, but maybe my grandparents did. After all they came to America as teens, how brave. And the older you get the more health things you have to worry about. I pray for peace , abundance & love & health everyday. There are still things at the store you can't always get. I never thought we would be wearing masks in America, that was something you only saw on tv. But I guess we are the wise ones now! lol We need to take care of ourselves right now .But I do think good things are coming, I just hope soon.

Life has truly changed so much. My family always raised gardens until they couldn’t anymore. They didn’t do food storage except for canning. I know now as a member of the LDS church about food storage and life has taken so many twists and turns that I could never have been prepared for. I never thought of it the way you explained it. We’re probably not going to be able to as much as we would like living in an apartment. I do love the way you explained about water and the basics. You brought up powdered milk and I like to always have some on hand. Do you have a best way to fix it so that it tastes better? I use to know someone that could make it and it would taste like regular whole milk. I pray and hope that the drought ends for y’all soon.

Has your storage changed since the kids are grown and it’s just the two of you? At the beginning of the pandemic I made an inventory of my freezer and didn’t buy meat for at least two months. It felt good and I enjoyed making menus based on what I have on hand. I started ordering groceries online and love the convenience of that. Our kids are grown so I just don’t do much preserving anymore, but I feel confident we could survive awhile. Thanks for your content.

Jennifer, I understand your concern I have some anxiety about this old world. I'm a farmers daughter and a farmers wife and a closet prepper. Lol. I always can from the garden but this year when I think I have enough I just keep canning. I believe in being as self sufficient as possible. I wish I would have l paid more attention to my grandparents and great grandparents on how the smoked meat butchered ect. Also will be checking out that product.

Here in Australia we have awful droughts year after year, farmers suffer horrendously. Without our farmers we all suffer. Our water costs shot through the roof and it was so expensive to shower, water anything….in fact we were banned from watering all gardens and lawns, fines were issued if you were caught.

Yep, exactly the same in Adelaide just a few years ago. Don’t forget no car washing unless bucket only, no hose! Remember the little saying to help us save water in our toilets - If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down! lol! Every summer our lawn looks like Jennifer’s back yard. Mind you, we’re going through the wettest winter on record here, so hopefully the lawns will stay green and soft this summer.

Jennifer, do you switch out the food in storage so it doesn't go bad or expire? What items do you keep indefinitely in storage and what items do you feel need to be replaced every so often so they don't go bad?
@grandmaandgrandpagriffiths4715
@grandmaandgrandpagriffiths4715 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we rotate items, when we start getting low in something we buy more and put it in the back of the old so we use the oldest stuff first. Sometimes I have to throw something out but not too often. Sugar and honey keep indefinitely. Flour needs to be used within about a year. Rice and beans keep for years. If I ever have to toss something I think of it as insurance😉

I live in Kentucky and we are lush green with lots of rain. I think our crops are doing well. Our little garden at home is doing well and we have not had to water it at all this year. During the pandemic we had a hard time finding distilled water for our C-pap machines. So we keep a small stash now. We keep a small stash of food. I truly enjoy your blogs.

Food storage is a great plan. I live in a small apartment in South Florida and don’t have as much room as I like. We have to put things in the refrigerator instead of a pantry because of the humidity and extreme heat. I do have to stock up for hurricane season, including paper goods….. But I really learned from my Mom, who had a small food storage. She learned from her Mother who went through the depression. Nanny survived that but it left a mark. She used to keep tons of cans of tomatoes and tomato paste on the floor of her clothes closet.

I was very stocked up before the first lockdown and now I am stocking up again before we are in another lockdown. I really need to work on stocking up water. I want to make sure that I have food to feed my grandchildren if anything happens. We live in the Midwest and we have had a pretty normal summer but, my heart aches for all suffering from drought. The wild fires out west are very concerning to me.

I had started building a food storage before covid. And household supplies. Just because we’re starting to get older. A little over a month ago my husband got diagnosed with diabetes and he can’t have most of the food storage I have. No flour, no cornbread, no sugar, no pasta, no rice. He can’t even have canned corn. I live in south Mississippi and we were getting rain every day for a month. Its not raining as much now we still get the summer time pop up thunderstorms. I think we are above average for our yearly rain total already.

I’m in Australia. Your family’s vlogs inspired me to have storage however I didn’t get around to it until covid hit and I couldn’t get basics including nappies/diapers. Now that the stores are well stocked, I always have storage of food, toiletries and emergency supplies - I keep it in the hall linen cupboard. The shortage that Australia has now is a covid vaccine - there are minimal supplies and only front liners can get one so we are still having lockdowns and mandatory masks.

Good morning. Where we live in CA, water is precious and our lawn looks like yours. The wildfire smoke is unreal, but we're thankful we have a home and are safe. You bring up some interesting things here. I think something that's just as important as having extra food etc. is having your financial house in order. As a Christian, I live my life according to the Bible and what is happening in our country and the world should be of no surprise. Thanks for sharing this. Your calm demeanor is so nice.

But I should think about doing better. Bottle water always a case or two in the garage. We are in Orlando,Fl and rain is the season at the present time. But so are hurricanes around. Watching two at this time. So glad to see you are recovering from your surgery. Stay healthy and keep sharing with us.
