Been there, doing that. I am a planner and found myself in the midst of a divorce when I was 54, which complicated things more. I met with my Financial Advisor from my bank and she was a wonderful help to me. I was still working but had to get an apartment. It was not easy, but with my son already married, I did not have those expenses and I made it. I put myself on a strict budget, my cremation is paid for as well as my car, so I am doing OK. I do love vacationing, so that is all figured into my budget, I find that it is a necessity, to get away from your life "so to speak" and do something you enjoy. Like you two, I do not have much to give away when the end does come, because I have already taken care of that. I love going on cruises and I also love flying to Bermuda and getting a little apartment and staying for a couple of weeks. However, I always comment on those camping trips you and your family have and remember so well my son and I camping in a tent in a state campground and how much fun that was when he was younger. At 76, I am in need of a bit more comfort for sleeping. Just like you two. I am sorry to have made this so long, but this all hit home with me, and married or not, we all must have some sort of plan for our last years of life.

I have watched your videos since I started university (started with Ruby and her family). My family is not rich, and I wanted to get a good education to be able to create a life where finances would not limit us in what we wanted to do. The university years were fairly lonesome, and I always curled up on the bed and watched your videos as a comfort, knowing and hoping that one day I would create my own family. I finished university a month ago, and am now going to be a lawyer at a top firm. When I watched this video I realised that finances is not all there is to it. I wanted to thank your family of being a prime example of what I would like to be when I get older. Thanks!

I love you guys, my hubby and I have saved and planned all our lives. When we bought a car we started saving up for the next one. We put money away for every eventuality. We saved all year for Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions. If we couldn’t pay outright for it we didn’t have it. Happy retirement guys💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

We have unknowingly done what you have suggested for our 68 years of marriage. There were times we thanked goodness we were prepared for major unseen expenses. Since retirement it has been uncomfortable at times to say “we just can’t go on a cruise, buy season tickets, buy a new car, etc “. Today we are so glad we have been disciplined! Loved your take on retirement which was basically ours. Love you both!

In the beginning of the pandemic I really didn’t know what to do with my time at home. So I started going through my house of 40 years and getting rid of the things that I no longer need or use. I’ve also discovered that my family has enjoyed receiving things from me. I have found out that my daughters are more choosy when their things have to be decided as something to keep or some thing to donate. They are not wanting to clutter their homes! Some thing very freeing about this whole process!

Great info! We retired a couple of years now and love it. We didn't want to be bored and like to take little mini trips and like our school district so my husband is a bus driver and I am a aide. It's 2 hrs a day and we get paid for 4, it's FUN and we still have summers and school vacations off!!

This is so helpful . We just turned 44 and are sending our oldest off to college next month . I haven’t thought about this til now . I am raising kids still so it’s been hard to imagine , I also got laid off and had the opportunity to go back to school and get my degree which I finish in December . Now I’m sitting here thinking of all this . This video was so helpful . Our youngest child is only going into 6th grade so it seems crazy to think of retirement .

Thank you for sharing your 8 steps to retirement. We have some in place but not all. I think the planning gives you some peace of mind for yourselves and also for your children. Buying your headstone and plots now is being kind to each other and your children. We still need to figure out a retirement budget. How much is Medicare and supplemental insurance going to cost? I like your plans to give your children and grandchildren things in your house while you are still in the land of the living. One of my winter projects is to put all our pictures in albums for our kids so they don’t have to sort pictures when we are gone. During the pandemic I made memory books for all us kids of Mom and Dad and close relatives. I started it because Mom with her dementia couldn’t remember her loved had passed away. I photocopied pictures and obituaries of our loved ones and Mom would often look at the pictures and read the obits. Thank you for such an informative video! You inspire us to better prepare for retirement!

Great advice to those about to enter retirement ! My husband and I both retired 5 years ago from NYS. He worked for the New York State Thruway authority as a supervisor. I worked as a registered nurse. The best thing we ever did was stay working for the state. After 34 years we both have our NYS pensions, IRAs, paid health and dental insurance by New York State, and our dream home in Florida. We kissed New York goodbye in 2018 and never looked back. We do go back up once or twice a year to see our families. We miss them and our friends but that’s all we miss about the NY life! . Welcome to the club you both are going to love your new “life!”

We’ve been retired for 3 years now in our early 60’s and loving it👍❤️. The only thing I would suggest that we did not do was put aside a fund just for unexpected repairs. But, our income allows for that as a whole. Get ready, get set, RETIRE!!!👍🥰

This is such a great video and important to see to remind people of. We are in the same place as you are. My husband is retiring the beginning of Jan also (I was a SAHM) so we are in the process of getting ALL medical things in order as well as our other details. We have known too many who didn’t quite make it to retirement or passed just after. We want to make life easier for our children now by preparing ourselves even though we plan to enjoy what retirement has to offer us. Either way we want to be ready but we plan to enjoy life in our next season of life for as long as possible! Stay well Grandma & Grandpa, you are not alone!😘

Since last year he has been in hospital 3vtimes, today marks the 4th, he put his will in order last year and arranged his funeral. Makes it easer for me and my sister, x

My husband and I are both retired. When we paid off our house last year, we also set up a home equity line of credit for unexpected home repairs down the road. We know that our $8K heat pump may need to be replaced within the next couple of years and that's what we plan to use our home equity line of credit for as well as some other home repairs that we've been needing. We are socking away money for annual property taxes and insurance as well. So, I think we've planned for the unexpected in a little different way, but it works for us.

It may sound dumb but I think the schools should include some kind of course in math that teaches high school kids how to start prepping for retirement and saving and budgeting. I think it would help on keeping people out of debt. I started home schooling my daughter at 3 rd grade. Starting 7th grade this year and I’ve got some lessons on starting that. Learning how to budget. Last year I made up a daily chore chart check list. At the end of the week she gets $10. Right off the bat I make her put 10% in savings. I’ve found that when it’s her money she’s shopping with her decision are more wise. She’s second guessing if she really wants that pack of gum or do I really love that shirt enough to buy it?

My husband and I have done a lot of the same things you mention here and hope to retire in 10 mos. We're buying a new car with cash at that time also. I just wish we had more in our investments, but we raised our kids on one income and it was so hard sometimes. One thing we're also doing is getting things around the house like new indoor blinds, some updated light fixtures, and any other items we want. Good tips you gave especially for younger people. Blessings.

My dad suffered a massive stroke 6 months after retiring from his blue collar job he had worked at for 40 years. He became paralyzed on his right side and was severely impaired mentally. This was in 2004 and miraculously, he is still living today although he has no quality of life. He and my mom didn't get to do any of the things they had planned. He now lives in a memory care facility and my mom lives alone. It is such a sad way to live for both of them. Enjoy the time while you've got it because you just never know...😔

Love this advice. We love the idea of you guys going on a mission. You are younger than when we went. Clark and I were both 67 when we retired and then we went on a mission here in our home, and then three years ago, we left for our 18 month mission, and came home and served another CSM. It is wonderful and you will love it. Can't wait for that new and those vlogs. I am wondering if you are thinking about selling and downsizing? You would get a ton of money for your beautiful home. What does Chad do for a living? Also, why do we never see Ruby go on vacations with you guys. You should of gone with her to Mexico haha

I'm very happy that you will soon be retiring! I retired 4 years ago at age 59. We had our home paid off as well as all other debt. We both have a pension and collect our SS. We saved money in our 401K's and right now we are feeling pretty good about our finances. There is definitely an adjustment to be made when you are not working everyday. Don't be surprised if you feel anxious or maybe sorry at times that you retired. Just know that feeling that way is totally normal and it will subside and you will begin to wish you had retired years ago!!

Good advice from one GRIFFITHS family to another ! What age can you retire in the USA ? Here in the UK it used to be 60 to get state pension and now its 67yrs and even if you have paid full contributions by 60 you have to keep paying till 67yrs but get no more . The 50yr old bracket in the UK have really lost out as we have lost 7 yrs of our pensions . We also have a pension portfolio and to add to this you tend use the bulk part of your pension when you first retire as you are still well enough to travel and as you get older you spend and need less . We also have drawn down where you can work part time and drawn the other earnings from your pension . Wills / power of attorney both medical and affairs need to be in place so if you are unlucky enough to get dementia in your old age a nominated family member acts in your best interests on your behalf . Funeral plans can be bought here and but when worked out you can end up paying more . We bought property to rent out which will greatly increase our pension . Have a lovely retirement you have worked hard for it xxx

This has already been said, but I agree some level of depression should be taken into account. I think all retirees will agree that retirement is a huge change in your life. I retired just at the start of the pandemic, and the depression from isolation has been tough. I went from working around a lot of wonderful people and visiting regularly with family and friends to being isolated. I recognized it for what it was and talked to my Dr. quickly.

May I ask your age?? I know you mentioned retiring by 60, so wondering if that age now or are you older ?? Thank you again for this advice. Wrote down everything you said!!!! We are good with no payments going out except for house mortgage, utilities and insurance. Not much left of that. So happy you talked about autos and waiting to purchase new when retiring, love that!! We are self employed and health insurance is KILLING us lol, so expensive. Trying to figure out how to do that before Medicare time, if we should retire earlier than 65. Thanks again!!!!!!

We lost my husband mom a month ago I found a notebook of little stories of moms life trying to read that. We have been thinking about getting our headstone already hopefully the spot next to his parents is still available

What a great idea to give away your belongings while you are still alive! It's a lot for the children to take on when parents pass. Still dealing with that now.

I love Dave Ramsey but one thing i don't agree with is his philosophy of saving for the kids college. Suze Orman suggests taking care of YOU. ....YOUR retirement,, etc. Your kids can get their own college education through scholarships, etc. Of course if you can afford to, by all means do it. But that advice made me feel better and not guilty about not providing my kids college money. At 62, Dave has taught me so much. We're debt freeeeee!

Congratulations🎉I agree 💯 on not paying for kids college. Our kids were on their own and they managed great.

I would also add that it’s not a good idea to pay for kids’ college if it will sacrifice your retirement. They are young and can rebound from the expense much easier.

I have wondered this for years watching different members of your family. Do you guys have family in the Ohio/West Virginia area? I’m curious because my mom’s maiden name is Griffiths, and I live in the area where the Fenton Art Glass factory was located. I know your family loves Fenton and with the same last name I had to ask!!!

I don’t know any relatives there but I sure love Fenton glass. We are probably distant cousins though. Hi Cuz👋

I have friends that have that same last name too. Either it is common or they maybe distant. I'm from Ohio too. Maybe they are the same person 🤔

Do you know if you can do a will online, get it notarized, then just keep it in your lockbox?? Or do you need to get an attorney and have them keep it??
