Music has existed in every culture throughout history. According to evolutionary theory, things that exist in every culture have to help humans survive. So what is it about music that is essential for our species survival?
Cam is a Grammy nominated, platinum selling, Sony music recording artist from Nashville, Tennessee. She released her first major label studio album, Untamed in December 2015. A song from that album, "Burning House" has since received widespread acclaim.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Cam is absolutely brilliant, but also so humble. I needed this to remind myself the struggle is okay, and I will be okay. Thank You!

Not sure how I missed this, thought I'd seen everything in existence involving Cam. You're an incredible musician and this was a great talk. And... the resemblance to Marilyn Monroe is uncanny.

What a cool talk! Cam's music is on repeat in our home (has been for a while). And now, this video will be, too. Especially when we need a reminder that we're all kindred spirits. Well done, Cam! 🙌🎶💕

Wow, Cam I was a fan of your voice, but you so eloquently explained what I subconsciously understood about music but could not explain. My example of this is for nearly 3 years I couldn't see my small children no thanks to my ex. It was Sara Evans music that soothed me, and kept me sane. Sara is my favorite vocalist, followed by Cam. I feel they pour their souls into their music as do many artists. But certain ones resonate more closely with some than others. Music soothes even the savage beast. Cam, Sara & many others thanks for generously sharing your gift!

I have been such a fan of her music for awhile now, don't know how I just now found this. So much truth and beauty in this. What a brilliant person and musician.

I really want her to collaborate with Taylor Swift, this speech reminded me of a little comment Swift instinctively had made back in 2006 when she was just 16 years old about her songwriting and how it allows her to understand and overcome a life situation and state of mind and feeling: "people have not always been there for me, but music always has". As too an outsider teenager myself back in the days I've discovered this video, this line stood with me until this day, and this Ted Talk by another musician I admire so much has rang the tune on my mind again. I wish these two remarkable women would get together to make some smart and heartfelt piece. Maybe it isn't everybody's wish, but it would certainly make my heart warmer, for as Cam said, music can make us feel less lonely. If they'd do it, because it would be like a wish of mine becoming reality, it would be to me as if I was just right there with them, for they there were right here for me. I loved this speech it so much.
