Probably the most well-rounded red pill guy out there. Knows how to code, well versed with real estate, tall and jacked as f*ck, taking on crazy challenges, good with girls, and brutally honest with himself in public. I have to fast for a few days to heal the gut, and binging on your videos lately to pull the damn trigger and just do it.

For those who haven't read victor frankl's book yet, he says this: "For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself."

I agree with this quote. However, quite a few people, myself included, have no cause or other person to pursue. And it seems impossible to just make one up, because you always know it to be false and trivial and your heart is never in it so that it motivates. I think that is the real root problem - there are no compelling causes for most people, because traditional causes like religion,or family, or country, or career etc simply don't exist for many.

@@snap_Fizz I can't see it. It seems to me that meaning requires the belief that one is playing an important irreplaceable role in a grand metanarrative. Those are two things very hard to get together. If the project is too grand, you're unlikely.to be important to it. If youhave importance, the project is likely too trivial. Only a few have both.

I was just pondering this too yesterday, in relation to solving puzzles. I've always loved jigsaw puzzles, sudoku puzzles, etc, and my goal the whole time I'm doing one, is of course finishing the puzzle... but I've always noticed that as soon as I finish one, I immediately want to start another one. Finishing something isn't the truly rewarding part, it's the process.

This is actually backed by Neuroscience! Watched a podcast by Andrew Huberman where he talks about rewarding going in the right direction, not just the result, to have sustaining motivation. On the flipside, I figured this out when I was 7, so I never wanted to do anything, except what I felt like in the moment. I feel like I don't have an inner compass that's guiding me anywhere, so I'm stuck...
@SteveWoods79
@SteveWoods79 3 жыл бұрын
People need to realise that the result just doesn't magically appear one day. It's more of a transition - that's why people like JS say you need to change your lifestyle. The best part of that transition is that your life continually improves - so if you're expecting a result 5 years later, 1 year and 2 years in you're already feeling better, life has improved massively to the point where you CAN achieve your goals because you're no longer in the mindset of being "at the start". TRUST THE PROCESS.....

I totally agree with what you've said here, John! From what I've seen and experienced, when your mind gets fixated on the results, and you eventually achieve those results, the goalpost just moves farther and farther. You made $1M today, tomorrow you want to make $2M. You get 1,000 subs on YT today. Tomorrow you want 10,000. It quickly becomes apparent that you're never quite where you want to be and that just causes a lack of fulfillment and satisfaction in life. Thanks again for this helpful video!

I think a better way to look at it is outcome independence. It's not that you don't CARE about the outcome, otherwise you wouldn't do anything, it's more like you do your best and let the dice fall as it may. The best analogy I ever heard was gardening and agriculture: You sow crops, manure them, water them, do EVERYTHING you can to provide them the optimal conditions, and then you let it go. It may grow, it may not, it's not up to you, what IS up to you is everything in the process up to that point, but afterwards you can't influence the outcome further, you must let it go.

Thinking about who I'm becoming--who I AM--feels more powerful and self-respectful than worshipping outcomes. But I didn't understand this when I was younger. It wasn't until I finally got fed up with feeling bad. If you want to improve your social status, for example, it's easy to be in the mindset of trying to win people over. But if you're doing that, you're falling into a subservient, chasing, desperate mindset. Instead, decide on a persona you want to be (find role models on TV and real life), and decide to be THAT. Suddenly, you are in the driver seat.

Another idea that fits right in with this is don't make material possessions the goal. When I was younger I chased after those things - fancy houses, fancy cars, etc. Now I like nice things, don't get me wrong. It's nice when I can afford to by them, but I don't need them to be happy. I don't pursue materiality as a direct goal. It can be the reward for a job well done, but it's not a goal. What's vastly more important is career and financial freedom. Trading off less material possessions to have less wordly burdens and more freedom is a good trade I think.

Gunna, listen to this a few more times. The greatest and funniest part at least to me is the Existential angst we suffer after doing all that work, expecting some grandiose feeling. Whatever your goals are, focus on growth, the journey of becoming the person who can obtain x goal. You might have a goal of dating/having sex with gorgeous women, but if you focus on the fact that you have sex with gorgeous women, you will be disappointed. Instead, to prevent this, focus on the growth, learning from your mistakes and becoming better. Listen to anyone that's become successful and how they almost ended up nearly suicidal because at that point it's "What now?". Focus on growth.
