Ahem. Slight correction to the "change the sheen on the trim." It is a holdover from the early days of flat paint (look at victorian paintings - you had two sheens - gloss and wallpaper). There was no choice. They didn't have the paint technology. When flat paints became available (thanks to the inventive folks who created the Arts & Crafts movement) the low sheen paints were fragile and expensive - the UNIVERSAL practice was to shellac the woodwork in the public rooms and paint utility areas and private rooms with high gloss trim (cheaper and sturdier, and in the case of the kitchen and bathrooms more sanitary). Back in the day baseboards were called "mop boards" and were installed 8" to 12" tall to prevent the plaster walls from getting wet, moldy, and damaged from wet mopping the floors - so a highly water-and-soap-resistant high gloss paint was a practical necessity. Then, over the course of decades, everyone started thinking it looked "right" and continued the practice. With high-performance low-sheen or flat paints nowadays it is entirely up to the decorator, flat paints are perfectly serviceable. Although I still prefer traditional finishes in traditional and revival period-style homes.

Easy fix, Valentina! My husband and I worked as professional painters when he was in graduate school. ALWAYS test large swatches of the paint on EVERY wall (or if there are nooks and crannies, every orientation, east, west, north south) AFTER priming the room. This gives the best, most accurate results Including being able to judge the sheen or finish of the paint). Color on adjacent walls "resonates" (i.e., absorbs the color of the adjacent wall and reflects its color, in turn, changing the adjacent color). Prime first. Test large swatches. Always test on all four orientations of the room. Test near the corners so that you can accurately judge the 'resonance' (this isn't really necessary for Decorator's White, but for intense shades of green and blue (in particular) absolutely necessary). Always assume that the color will be more intense once it's splashed everywhere. Paint color technology 101 in a single paragraph. Paint color isn't rocket science, but I've even seen professional decorators flub this.

Wow awesome tips! Wanna be my personal adviser when I paint my whole house white next week ? 😜😅. I really appreciated all you said, specially how much more dramatic a color is when it’s all over the wall (I learned that the hard way with terracota “accent” walk years ago. Question: How do we apply the rule about how much more dramatic a walls color gets when choosing white? I’m gonna prime my walls first as you suggest, but i am afraid to choose a warm white color that ends up looking dirty or old, since my house-to-be is quite old. But I also don’t want the clinical/cold/look if certain whites
@lindacgrace29732 жыл бұрын
@@jerurenteria325 Oddly warm whites that have yellow added tend to look 'dirtier' than whites that are warmed up with deep brown. My favorite color for white houses is called Cielo Blanco - 2 drops of burnt umber per gallon of the white base tint. It bleaches to pure white on a sunny day, but never ends up looking dirty at dusk. Burnt umber is cool enough that green or blue accents look just as good as black or warm stone grey. The problem with whites is not the intensity of the white - it's what it reflects nearby. If your neighbor has red brick, that side of your house will always look pink. If your neighbor's house is yellow brick, sadly, your white wall will always look a little bedraggled. If there is a giant evergreen tree on the south side, the south side will always look a little grey-green. For whites, it's the environment that counts. If you are close to your neighbors, it can matter. If you are in a more spacious suburb, it won't. Color reflection only holds for about 15 feet; any further than that, and you should be good to go. Hope that helps!
@jerurenteria3252 жыл бұрын
@@lindacgrace2973 I had no idea about the yellow/brown difference. How do I know if they’ve added that color to make the paint? Does it say on the label? I’m gonna have to check out if my favourite whites have either! And good point about white reflecting other colours. Im painting the interior and I can’t really see the neighbours from my townhouse, just a little patch of grass and a white fence and the top of a baby blue condo behind (where the sky would be anyways). But I think the biggest thing would be the honey oak (yellowish/orangish) laminate flooring. …. I also have a dark blue couch that I might change in the future. So I have the warmth of the floor and the cool of the couch 🤪 I’ll look up cielo blanco. What brand is it? I like how versatile that is, it can go with warms (my floor), and cools (my couch and any gray accents)
@lindacgrace29732 жыл бұрын
@@jerurenteria325 Cielo Blanco was a color in the Sherwin Williams paint range. They change their color names and create new collections so often, I'm not even sure they still call it that. But the formula for custom tinting (they custom tint at Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, and any paint store) is 1 gallon of white tintable base paint + 2 drops of burnt umber (umber goes a little orange, you want BURNT umber). You go to the shelf and look for indoor paint in the right sheen and find the "light" Tintable Base. Then take it to the counter, and they will add the drops of color and shake the paint for you in a spiffy machine that makes sure it is fully mixed in and you won't have any color streaks. Another, very similar option, is Benjamin Moore's Swiss Coffee. ALL paint companies can provide the right paint by either tinting to your formula (2 drops of burnt umber) OR by matching a color from another paint company; they have little charts and computers to help them figure it out. ( whew!) With a condo, I would recommend that you skip flat paint and go with an eggshell. It looks very much like flat paint, and covers imperfections in the wall just like flat paint but it reflects a lot more light in the room. With indoor paint, the furnishing in the room will create a lot more color reflection on the white paint than anything outside. If the tree casts too much color on your wall, put up white IKEA 'linen' drapes. Even open (pulled back from the window and just hanging on either side of the window) that dilutes the reflection by 50%. Congrats on the new condo! Good luck with the paint. Painting is more complicated than it looks, I recommend watching KZbin by RealityRenovision "How to Paint Like a Pro" kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJa4qa2VpNdlh9U. Painting is a big job but can easily be DIY with minimal tools. It totally sucks to discover that you missed a step AFTER you're halfway through (don't ask me how I know that 🤣).

So here's the thing. When we went to pick out paint colors for our living room, the sample pots were €14. So if you have 5 potential choices, that is going to be a lot of money for just samples. It would've been half the price of the amount of paint we would need to do our living room. Those samples used to be really cheap but now, they can be so expensive that it's just not worth it when you're on a budget.

YOU ARE AMAZING. We just bought a new home and I have been binging your videos. You have some of the best tips I have heard and deliver them in a way that is so understandable. I can not wait to apply some tips to my new house!

Love this video, Valentina. I use Benjamin Moore paint and swear by the washable matte finish for walls and pearl finish for trim and doors. That is what has worked for me. Yes, Mr. Clean MagicErasers are perfect for cleaning walls! Congratulations on reaching 150,000 (now 153,000!) subscribers.

In one house I bought it was painted brown! in every room, I did just that, I painted large swaths of various colors, then lived with that mess for a few weeks until it became clear which one looked best in each room. My friends and family seriously thought I'd lost my mind, but it paid off in not having to do any repainting nor unhappiness with the colors.

Renee Russell here. Valentina, I enjoy, love and watch all of your videos. Sometimes I watch some of them a couple extra times because I can’t absorb all the information you provide at one time! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! This video about paint and the plethora of opportunities to make your walls, ceilings and trim sing is just awesome, You did such a great job touching on the decisions one can make to create their own nest. Many thanks! 🌷

I am TOTALLY a list maker. We just finished remodeling our son’s home! Yay! I used much of your advice, along with a couple other KZbinrs! Thank you! You are fun and very upbeat! He wanted grays, black and URBANE BRONZE (love love love that color) and we went with a sort of urban loft rustic modern look! It is awesome! Thanks for all your tips and tricks and laughs! “Hello to Jack!”

Val, I love how passionate you are about the sheen on the baseboards 😁 btw- my husband is obsessed with matching the outlets to the walls, you two would get along 😊 thanks for the great tips, as always 🖤

Even the outlet? It seems like they might take a beating if it's like the outet where you plug in the vacuum every couple of days?
