Killing off parasites quickly is always risky. Many years ago we rescued a kitten from a neighbor that shouldn't have been allowed to look at animals much less own any. I'm continually surprised the hawks didn't get the kittens. Maybe they could spot the fleas from 100 feet up. We washed that poor kitten in flea soap 3 or 4 times. The bottom of the sink was black like someone poured black sand in it. I had never seen so much fleas on a critter before. Later when we took it to the vet the vet said he had fleabite anemia. The vet gave him his shots and an anti parasite drug. That drug killed so many internal parasites it nearly killed him. Think lifeless body that barely moved and didn't walk at all for days with a high fever. Felt like a hand warmer when you picked him up. At one point we put him in tepid water to attempt to cool him off when his fever got too high, somewhere around 106 if I remember right. He lived and grew up to be a beautiful Main Coon type mix, beautiful grey alley cat color with soulful eyes that would just look at you till you successfully read his mind. Sadly he got liver failure at about ten years of age.

Considering the increase of "Helicopter" parents since the 70's and 80's, this has very little to do with age or peer pressure. When you've never been taught to challenge what's said to you, because your parents did nothing but "protect" you from all of lifes inherent dangers, regardlessof how small they are,, you never learn to reason things out before acting impulsively.

We have this here in Hawaii, I’ve known a handful of people that have succumbed to this, one had symptoms for a few weeks and recovered, one went into a coma and expired, most take decades to slow recovery. Probably from eating out. Dirty kitchens with rats would do it probably. Even fast food carts or fast food chains. Bear Grylls has eaten his fair share of slugs and snails. In one (or maybe a few) episodes of 'Man vs. Wild' (also called 'Born Survivor', depending on whether you are in the US or UK). However, he boiled them over a campfire beforehand, to improve flavour and, importantly, to kill off any lungworms and bacteria. Even having been cooked and seasoned with foraged herbs, Bear Grylls did not rate the taste and texture of the slugs very highly. However, as Gyrlls would say: "a good source of protein for a survival situation".

Same. I wash everything. I have a spray bottle with 1/2 water, 1/2 white vinegar, and a few drops of Dawn dish soap. Everything gets washed with that. Lettuce, melons, tomatoes, oranges, and even bananas.

So this is related to rat feces. Is it in mouse also? And if unwittingly someone ate food with that on it, they could get this? Wish there were more answers here. Would it need to be fresh not died or cooked (in fast food oil, etc.) for the larvae to start inside the body of a human? Years ago an article was posted in the lobby of a public library where a boy died from mouse urine from on the lid of a canned good which he ate. Terrifying.

in this case, it wasn't parasites, but some kind of one-cell microorganism. he got infected from urine. yes, can need to be washed before opening, particulary, if you don't heat the food for long enough.

Lesson 1 - Always tell the truth when drs or EMT ask what you take? Admit to everything you have ingested, they are not there to get you in trouble for illegal activity. Their sole interest is in saving your life Some people may have omitted swallowing a slug out of embarrassment And met with their demise
