The key is to get everything maxed out early on in the game. I definitely dont max out the SPEED though, this dude is a maniac haha. The one thing to remember is at the very very end when youre making the escape and dodging the beams, the very last beam closes all the way. I nearly did no death runs a few times, but it was that damn final fully closing beam that would get me because I was too busy dodging the previous beams and forgot about the last beam.

That music right after you hit the start button to begin the game: priceless! It starts off with such a wonderful tone of adventure, as if to say, you're in it now, buckle up pilots of the Vic Vipers because this game is going to show you some ish! I remember being in love with the music, the game play and the premise of this game especially since I was a fan of Gradius. Two players, different gameplay perspectives, forcefields and warps throughout some stages! All I can say is the Nostaglia is overwhelming. It feels great!

in a tie for fave nes games with bionic commando. I remember there was a magazine or something (probably EGM) that you take a picture of the screen when you beat Life Force, then you MAIL in the pic (yes a piece of paper with an image on it, in an envelope with a stamp) and you got something. I definitely did it, but I don't recall the prize. Good times.

There are actually two versions of this game; however, Lifeforce is the more easily recognized version. There were also two machine variants: one gave you ship powerups straight, the other has the gradius progress bar. AFAIK the only version to get the gradius progress bar treatment console-wise is the NES version (though some Salamander cabinets do this as well).

Outside the US this game was called Salamander. No idea why they changed it. The only thing I can think of is that there was a 1985 movie called Life Force and maybe they wanted to capitalize on it? Obviously that movie had nothing to do with this game though, and it was also a box office flop. Or maybe they just thought Salamdander would sound too weird to Americans?

The original Gradius was a challenge and a half. This sequel is every bit as difficult but the graphics are much improved. I also enjoyed Stage 5's brief homage to the 1st game some halfway thru the stage, both the 3 sentry drone attack as well as the throwback music to the boss fights. And of course King Tutankhamunattack! Even by 8 bit standards the graphics on this are first rate.
