Mayavaram Krishnamurthy Thyagaraja Bhagavathar (1 March 1910 - 1 November 1959), also called M.K.T., was an Indian actor, producer and Carnatic music singer. He is considered to be one of the most successful actors in Tamil cinema ever.
Bhagavathar was born in the town of Mayiladuthurai in then Tanjore district of the Madras Presidency, British India. He started his career as a classical singer and stage artist in the late 1920s. In 1934, he made his début in films with the movie Pavalakkodi which turned out to be a hit. From 1934 to 1959, Bhagavathar acted in 14 films of whom 7 were box-office hits. Bhagavathar's 1944 film Haridas ran for three consecutive years at Broadway Theatre, Madras and created the record for the longest continuous run at a single theatre. Bhagavathar was arrested in 1944 as one of the main suspects in the Lakshmikanthan Murder Case and spent three years in prison before being released in 1947after a privy council verdict came in his favour. Bhagavathar's career declined after his arrest and though he did continue to act in Tamil films after his release from prison, none of them did well. Bhagavathar died of diabetes at the age of 49 on 1 November 1959.
Bhagavathar was acclaimed for his powerful, melodious voice and the ease with which he could sing high pitch notes. Critics and film historians acknowledge Bhagavathar as the "first superstar of Tamil cinema

No one can match MKT in terms of his golden voice, looks and charisma .. Even in acting he excelled in every role as a gentle, innocent , romantic, and God fearing character .. Till his last day he remained a true bhakta and did not manipulate for getting power or position or acquiring more wealth.. His life remains a sacrifice since he could have very easily gone to the next level if he were greedy and ambitious... but he chose to remain simple and spiritual.. It will be a fitting tribute to this great artiste if there is a memorial built for him in his native, Trichy, and one in Chennai, the cinema capital of Thamizh Nadu.. Let Sri MKT's fame and name remain forever !!

He passed away in General Hospital what is now renamed Rajiv Gandhi GH opposite to Central railway station in Chennai. His last journey in Sangiliandapuram, Trichy reportedly took 4 hours to reach the burial grounds due to the huge number of his fans to have a last look at their movie idol. The criminal conviction followed by life imprisonment sentencing against him during the waning years of British rule really had no solid basis according to the public opinion of the people of his times. But the doubtful conviction and the money he has to spend to the lawyers to prove his innocence entirely ruined his professional and financial future. It is a sad irony that he will hear his own Haridas movie songs being played in the Broadway theater just across the Madras Central jail where he was imprisoned for two and a half years. While his co convict NSK got many movie chances after release MKT got only 4 or 5 and all failed in the box office. The ups and downs he faced in his life were extreme.

I do not have verification but have read somewhere that in return for his war-time fund raising services, the then Madras government (British) offered to make him the zamindar of the Tiruverumbur area (a huge land area where the BHEL factory stands today) of Trichy. The great Bhagavathar politely declined saying to the effect, "who are you to give me my country's land to me"! What a patriot indeed! And golden voice. Deena Karunakarane and Suttum Vizhi and Krishna Mukunda are my favorited. There will be no other like him! I am SO sad that he was unfairly prosecuted and jailed for an extended period at the peak of his creative career. :(
