It's time to harvest the onions. Let's see what I have hiding in that dirt!
***************************************************************
If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for close to six years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.
Check out a few of the videos in these playlists to catch up on what goes on here!

I've had soo many dogs but this one was the smartest kindest most loving ever. The loss is huge and I'm trying to relearn life without him. Means alot to me that you took the time to reply but not at all surprised as over time I've come to learn that's the kind of person you are. Thx again...

Loose soil is the trick for large onions, carrots, potatoes etc. etc. A great trick for large root plants is to mix 50/50 sand & nutrient rich soil. The rich soil provides nutrients the sand lets them expand to a huge size. If you use just straight soil it's often packed so tight root plants are too restricted and can't expand.
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
If you have a lot of clay in your soil I can see that being a problem. Great tip for those in that situation. My soil is very nice and loose already with lots of rock so I don't personally want to add sand. It already struggles to hold water.

Ariel, Those were some large onions. I grew my from the small bulbs and pulled them out when the grasshoppers were starting to eat them up. They didn't get very big. Now that the garden is coming back it is going to snow next week. Next year I will grow from seed. With all the clover in your lawn, do you every get stung by bees walking bare foot? That always happened to us when we were kids in the summer.

Ariel how did you learn so much already. You cant be but 25 yrs old. For heavens sake you know more than most of us here who are waaaay older than you. Im just shocked at what i learn here. Im so happy you produce this channel to teach people who have the time and energy and need to know how to harvest and can their good foods from their gardens. I hope the world is now leaning towards all of this instead of the grocery store version of getting foods. But i know im dreaming. Im so grateful i can watch a healthy happy young woman do this. Thank you. Oh i wanted to ask if you have a lot of bunny rabbits there. And if so how on earth did you you keep them off the garden areas or am i stupid as this is the reason for the raised block beds?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Pay attention, read, listen, ask questions, try things, avoid any kind of formal schooling which tends to kill most real learning, learn from mistakes, try more things. Also, you're off by almost a decade. :) I have a friend who swears there are rabbits in the area, but I've lived here for 13 years and spent thousands of hours looking for and watching wildlife and have never seen one.

You sure got a bumper crop of onions there Ariel, well done. Interesting to see the variations we use to cure our onions.I usually set two or three pounds of sets in low ridge towards middle of March Pull and use what I need during Summer months. About first week of August turn down stalks and give them two or three sharp twists at bulb, leave them for week or so till stalks start to wilt then pull them and leave on ridge for few days.Then I tie stalks , five or six onions in a bunch tight as I can with garden twine and set them on netting wire I got strung up under joists in shed with wilting stalks hanging downwards. Usually last me till March. This method suits fine here in mycorner of Ireland, a world away from your mountain home in Wyoming. Phew, Best regards.

Not really, peculilar thing, here in this region of Ireland ,for some reason , we seem always to get much less rain and wind than other parts of country, also I keep ridge free of weeds which helps them stay dry .My biggest problem are slugs who really love the stalks.

Those onions are gorgeous. Would they cure better on something that promotes ideal 360° air circulation from the start? I wondered if laying them on the grass could introduce or promote mold growth, given the moisture level of a lawn + moisture of freshly pulled roots, + mold spores that can grow in soil. I don't know...just wondering. And what about brushing most of the soil off back into the bed, ripping the roots off over the bed, then braiding the leaves instead, then hanging them on hooks? I've never grown them, but you sure make me want to... and scallions, garlic, & leeks. My favorites are the red onions. They add so much to any salad, & caramelize better than yellow onions. Why is that? Higher sugar content or are the yellow onion slices too thick & higher in moisture content? Loved the sound of the roots snapping as you pulled them right out of that just right soil. You reminded me - I used to make a leek soup - Vichyssoise, until the cost of leeks seemed too high, by the time I factored in the org cream & butter, & couldn't find my favorite Maine potatoes anymore. Now I might find them online. I've got some potato greenery still green in my compost pile. The groundhogs don't eat those, I guess their leaves are poisonous. Is it too late to dig them up? That potato leek soup is such an exceptional treat on hot summer days, made grand with a mixed greens only salad & a glass of a soft white wine. I keep wanting to grow my own leeks, but it's just me now, so don't bother growing my own produce. How long do they keep? Not long, in my experience, once harvested. Can they be kept in the ground until a deep frost comes along? Kept if under row cover? I k ow Brusseles Sprouts can still be harvested into November, following at least 3 snowstorms. Just knocked the snow off them & cut off the rest, here in Zone 5 - maybe longer. Tbey were fine. I do crave greens though, & do eat tons of salad greens. I'd need to know how to out smart ground hogs & other critters. Something ate the squash growing in my compost pile this year. It was a volunteer, & I was looking forward to it. 2 years in a row, before the groundhogs showed up, my compost pile produced nearly 30 of the most delicious Butternut squash ever, each year. The leaved were huge & vibrantly healthy. They were still growing, but plenty large already. So had to snip them off. Left a 2" stem to die back. Even sauteed the delicious seeds with a bit of olive oil & Tamari sauce. Kept 2 squash to dry up & hold those magic seeds, but it was likely the compost that made them macically so colored & delicious. Think my daughter found them & threw them away. Their flesh was a deep cross between a pink grapefruit tinted deep cantelope color. I gave several away, & the ones I kept in the cool back hall were enjoyed over winter, when I roast chicken & make mashed & pan gravy. They stayed edible until late winter /early spring.
@FyNyth

I guess that could be a problem in humid areas. Here the air, ground, yard, etc. are all very dry. You could hang them, I just don't have a nice warm spot with space to do so. Potatoes should be just fine in the ground till the soil actually freezes. I don't think it's ever too late to dig leeks, they are just fine under the snow. Too bad you didn't get a yield from your volunteer plants this year!

So far no burrowing gophers have made it into the new beds though they are still actively digging through and eating things in the yard, flower, and herb beds.

Very nice haul! Pretty huge onions! Do you keep all of your harvests or do you trade/sell some of it?

Hi Ariel! Love your channel! I stumbled onto it months ago and have been working my way through all of your videos and sharing them with my friends. We are all so impressed with your hard work and sensible approach to a simple life. You are living the dream! I have one question. I have seen your videos about your second property and I was hoping to see some updates. I believe I have seen two videos, are there more that I have missed? I was especially interested in more information about the old trailer you had to dispose of on the property. You said it posed some complications and you hoped to do a video about that. Thank you again for making all of these videos... You have demystified a lot of things about drying herbs and vegetables, cooking nutritious food and canning... You make me feel like tackling some projects of my own! 😁

Do the moose move your raised bed blocks around over winter?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
I guess that could happen in the first little snowfall, but it never has. Most of the winter the snow has them so well buried and frozen in place that they can't go anywhere.

Burley stays around so nicely. Dis you specifically train him to stay in the yard or has he shown no desire to wander alone?

English Shepherds are often called "english shadows" for their tendency to stick right beside their people. But he's also had a rule since he was little that he needs to stay in the fence line (in the trees that stops the deer, elk, moose, etc. from eating the garden, would not contain a dog, it's just a marker line for him) unless I specifically tell him he can go through. Most of the time that's been no issue though.

Your onions look wonderful! You must be thrilled with your new gardens. After you cure them at your friend's shop, where will you store them?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Once they are drier and a little tougher so they don't bruise, I can stack them up deeper in a box and store them beside the garlic.

Ariel, you don't use the tops? they would dry well, or add to soups no?
@FyNyth

You could, though with a fully mature onion they are pretty tough, dry, and kind of woody.

Would you consider mapping out your garden, which plants coexist with which?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Well you can see my garden map and why I put things where they are in these videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmepk6ydZ7p2b9k kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp6ugaB7hb2AY7c I know there are folks who talk about plants that do better or worse beside different things. My things are planned by the sun and weather conditions though as that's my biggest limiting factor here.

Can onions be canned? Just curious if this can be done. I know most people like them raw but wondered if you can back up your storage with canned onions to ensure they will all be used.
@FyNyth

They could be. If I have extra though I'd choose to dry them. Dehydrated onions are great in soups, sauces, etc.

You mentioned the hunters, do they bother you sometimes? Here in Italy they are terrible, nasty lot. I hate them, they hunt for sports, they have no respect and can get into your land, legally, as they are a strong lobby here. Sometimes they send their dogs which can be aggressive ans attack chickens, etc. They killed one of my chickens😖 I hate hunters, I do.
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Hunters don't bother me, anyone who's careless with guns does though. They are absolutely not allowed on private property unless it's with the landowners permission. Someone just poached an elk on private property this morning near my house. Game and Fish already caught them, but thankfully that idiot didn't carelessly shoot anyone or their pets. And here if a dog is chasing or harassing either wild game in the forest or livestock on your property, the dog is fair game for you to shoot. If you're dog takes off after someone's cows, I can assure you it will quickly be dead.
