Finally, an oft requested video on my laundry setup! Though I'd done two pretty detailed blog posts over the years on this, and have referred folks to them repeatedly, I never did a video. So here you go! How I do my laundry in an off grid tiny home on wheels with a very limited amount of electricity provided by my little solar setup. Find all the WonderWash and other items I use at amzn.to/2rxwoS9

If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for close to six years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.
Check out a few of the videos in these playlists to catch up on what goes on here!

Ariel--it's not hyperbole to say you have changed my life with this information! For 40 years I've been going to the laundromat (first because of apartment living, for the past 20 because of my very small house.) Not a big deal, but it does add up $$-wise and is time I'd rather spend doing other things (not to mention coming in contact with other people during this pandemic.) As soon as I watched this video I ordered the washer and spin dryer and, after doing my first batch of laundry, can call this a total success! I *was* able to do a load of sheets (one set of queen sheets) and a load of 2 towels in the washer. I then spun each item individually. But the biggest impact that I can foresee is that, since one can't do a huge load of laundry at once, I'll just do 5 pounds of laundry at a time as it accrues. And in that sense, I'll basically never have dirty clothes! Sorry to go on at length, but this is the greatest thing I've come across in quite some time. Thank you for this--and all your other--videos.

I have the same set up and use it on all my clothing & small laundry items to save $ and trips to the coin laundry. I do a spin cycle between the wash & rinse cycles to remove as much of the dirty water as possible & to maximize cleaning. After a rinse cycle I re-use the relatively clean rinse water on the next load of dirty laundry, which means I use the water twice. This set up saves at least $10 each week at the laundromat! That works out to just about $500/year and decreases my use of water and electricity.

I loved my WonderWash! I live on a second floor apt, am disabled and can't make it to the basement laundry room safely. I could wash two twin sheets and pillowcases easily in one load. Jeans, sweaters, towels, you name it. I finally wore mine out (the frame gave up the ghost and for whatever reason, the gasket was beginning to fail. BUT, i would highly recommend this way of doing laundry, it is highly economical and takes very little standard detergent such as Tide. I also sometimes just rinse things in a bit of baking soda, or white vinegar if all the clothing needs is freshening and that is no rinse required.

I do exactly the same as you with my clothes and I do laundry about once every 3 weeks. I do have a 'normal' washing machine but I try and be economical with water and electricity. So I run it on a 15 minutes cycle at 30c, clothes come out absolutely fine. As a child my mum washed everything by hand. When I left home I wanted to help her but I couldn't afford to get her a washing machine so I bought her a spinner.

Your simple washing machine reminds of the following clear strategy in the use of chemicals: these 4 in sequence (order of importance) 1)time 2)temperature 3)agitation 4)concentration. Any three of the four can be lessened while any one must be increased to compensate.The Wonder Wash takes advantage of this principle enabling the use of mild detergent with cold water with intermittent agitation over time, or any other order of operation. Love that someone engineered the thing into existence, and the giant salad spinner is something I wish I had in my early just getting started with my life years. Well constructed video by the way, very nicely done.

If you love washing with soap nuts, try it with fresh ivy leafs. Same effect, it contains soap as these nuts. It coasts nothing and you find them everywhere. Same for chestnuts (those who cannot be eaten). You mixe them in your kitchen robot, dry them, and finally get the powder into a little bag and add it to your laundry. Works great! Finally you can do loundry-soap with ashes of your fireplace too. Surch for it on internet. It works fine! So many options to use ecological soaps that coast in most cases nothing at all. Only thing to know: it works at bit less with white laundry, which will not come out snow white.

Just seeing this awesome video today and thought I’d toss in a few more tips for those wanting or needing to do laundry at home either all the time or some time without typical machines. I’ve done laundry in a pair of five gallon buckets (one for wash and other for rinse) using a toilet plunger with a few half inch holes drilled in the rubber as the agitator. If you want to be really fancy get a lid for the bucket and drill a hole in the middle for the plunger handle to fit through. Regular laundry detergent works fine. I’ve also used an electric unit that has a wash bay on one side and spinner on the other. It uses very little electricity and does an execellent job. I got it on Amazon for $90 with free shipping. Can’t do bedding and curtains in it but pretty much everything else it will handle. Small loads at a time. It is light and portable and fits nicely in the bathtub to do laundry but it can be used anywhere the water can drain away. Outdoors, even inside on a table with a bucket on the floor to catch the water when done. Key, absolutely key, is using warm or hot water, agitation, and short periods of soaking to have the best outcome in any washing system, regardless. If you do not have a spinning machine then wring out by hand as best as possible, then lay a garment on a thick dry towel, roll them up together and put some weight on it to squeeze water into the dry towel. Takes more time and towels but works well on thicker items like jeans and sweaters that are harder to wring out by hand. Definitely use a laundromat or friend’s washing machine to do the big stuff like bedding, curtains (if they are washable), bed sheets, large towels, etc. even if you have a washer and dryer at home. Our local laundromat has a pair of giant front loaders that can wash it all in one go for about $10. Dryers for about $3 in quarters. So for $13 or so all the big stuff is done a few times a year. These last three tips might be the best ones because they reduce the frequency of needing to wash. Use Febreeze fabric spray on every garment when you take it off. This works especially well on sweaty clothes. Spray them and hang them. Odors will not develop! And that leads to the next tip. Rewear clothing that isn’t stained or soiled. There really is not a need to wash something that isn’t dirty. The Febreeze tip extends that even more. Lastly, buy enough clothes to last a month without washing. If you use the Febreeze tip, rewear several times, and have enough clothes to last a while you only need wash every month or so. Oh, bonus tip. For really soiled items like kitchen towels, dirty socks or underwear just do an emergency wash in a five gallon bucket or similar. Half fill with warm water, add a tablespoon (or less) of regular laundry detergent and a sprinkle of Oxyclean powder, agitate (aka stir back and forth) with a broom handle, let soak ten minutes, stir again, pour out the water and fill half way with fresh water, stir again, drain, wring, hang to dry. No need to do a full load for emergency items.
@bonriver9420
@bonriver9420 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you say but I would caution against using the Febreeze fabric spray. It is full of chemicals that you really should not be placing against your skin. Your skin is your largest organ and it absorbs all of these chemicals. Not good for your health.

I used this same set up to wash laundry for a family of 4 for about a year. The wonder wash and spin dryer combination really works well! Your tiny home is beautiful :)

The Wonder Wash is actually pretty cheap, too. I got one a few years ago, right after they changed the design. It's great for those little loads that don't need a full washer.

That is very cool. I have heard of the soap nuts. Have to try those. Thanks for showing us. That washer does hold alot more than it looks like it would.

It would be cool to have a drying rack that is on a pulley and can be raised up to the ceiling, out of the way while everything dries. Would be easy to dry sheets up there too. I would think a sheet on its own would fit to wash/spin. So interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing

I like your setup. I've used a 5 gal bucket n plunger but I sure like that washer. I'm now thinking of getting one. Would be great for camping too. Thanks so much for doing your video. I have a clothes rack too n one that hangs above the woodstove. Have it on a pulley system. Works great n it's out of the way.

I have that same spinner and it is the best money I ever spent! The clothes come out so much drier than my big washing machine spin. I use it at home, I take it to the campground, and also on vacation, to spin out our clothes as soon as we get in from the pool or the ocean. It is lightweight and the handle makes it so easy to move. I rarely use my electric dryer anymore. I use a clothes rack, too. I don’t have that washer, but would like to get one. Great video!

Oh I have used soap nuts before... they're great if you have allergies to deterrents. That spinning seems very therapeutic.

Ariel, I read your blog post some time ago about laundry. For the past few years I have been using a portable washing machine that has two barrels one for washing and rinsing and the other is a spin dryer like yours. I can only use it when it isn't freezing out. I will be glade when I get my heated laundry room finished and not have to worry about the weather.

I have one. Lots of time with the wash and rinse. Bought small 10-12 lb 120 volt dormitory washer. Just add water. Drain outside or to a bucket. Uses less than 300 watts so use off batteries or generator. So much less time consuming.

I use this cloth rack all the time, though I have a washer and a dryer. I put t-shirts on hangers and hang them outside on a tall rack. . Then all you do is grab them all and hang the whole stack in the closet. And those 6 spots on transverse rods on the fold-up are just perfect for 6 socks :)

The manufacturer suggests 6-8 dress shirts OR 10 tee shirts OR 2 pairs of jeans maximum. Clothes should be placed in the canister loosely, not jammed pack for it to wash well. I do wash a full-size sheet and pillowcase at a time with no problem. And the Nina Soft Spinner will hold 12 lbs. of clothes.
