Thank you for sharing your preferences. They all make sense including what's worth taking the time and energy to change or not change now. I agree the lighting issue in your kitchen corner is something that could change easily. Once you've moved onto your new property, you might want to consider building a large covered deck at least on one side of your house and maybe even all the way around. It would provide a beautiful area for entertaining and, if enclosed, could provide a green house to start plants for spring planting and extend the growing season a bit. Again, thank you for sharing your beautiful home.

Ariel, the pocket door idea across the top of the stairs would work by modifying the cabinetry on the loft side. I use pocket doors a lot - just build out allowing 2" clearance and put the slider track on the floor instead of hanging it.

Thanks Ariel. Some of those things you mentioned would still be a pretty easy fix. Not hard to add a gable,doors to close in your shelving. I wouldn't go with composite or mdf casings on the windows. That stuff is worse, will swell up when it gets wet, unless you go with the plastic casing like you would use around a bathroom window but looks really tacky! Kind of one of those things you have to live with, wipe it up,control the humidity, you know! You get the same issue with a larger home in cold climates.I live in Canada so we are kind of used to these problems. Try rolling up a small tea towel and putting on the sill when it gets cold. Just make sure you change it regular. Bleach sucks but works well for mold and mildew. Thanks much for all the info and insight/ hindsight!! Like your videos!!

Great ideas and again it's easy for someone to say "why didn't you think of that before?" But there's a lot of things you have to live and experience to realize it could have been done more effectively. Actually your kitchen cupboard issue I've seen someone deal with like your curtain enclosure over your refrigerator. They used old flour and coffee bean sacks (with the silkscreened product name on it for aesthetics) cut to fit the size of the shelves. It kept the dust off what was on the shelves and solved a problem like you have with your bookshelves. The one I saw had a few items sticking out further than the shelf which would have had doors unable to fully close which is frustrating to look at, the sacks went over the tops so you didn't notice things sticking out. I didn't post this to try to make you change it, only to add to the conversation as I find pooling all sorts of ideas helps to get people to see pros and cons of their own unique living environment. I love your channel and blog and wanted to thank you for extremely valuable information which I never would have thought of. Keep living the dream!

My favorite is definitely a gooseneck tiny house! Gooseneck portion would be bedroom, then I'd still have a reverse loft on the other end, it's just more practical for my needs! Even if I didn't get a gooseneck, I'd still do a reverse loft, maybe one on each end. Chattanooga Tiny House has some good ideas with that. I've even played around with different layouts, like having my kitchen up there and living room down with an L shaped couch by the short staircase or something. Or an L shaped kitchen and my living room elevated, it'd be a better space for me to workout, etc. I just have a ton of ideas lol.

Ariel; While you were talking about needing doors for your kitchen shelving & seeing all the glass jars on the shelf my mind went straight to where you live. You live in a seismically active area. You might want to consider expediting the doors project (locking), and at least temporarily run a bungie cord across the front to keep the jars from coming off the shelf. You might want to do something similar for your bookshelves as well. Have a great day!
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the concern. But considering I live on top of the largest volcano on earth, I think if it does go off, I won't be worried about the jars. None of our regular little earthquakes are strong enough to rock anything.

Funny to hear you say, that you would omit that little porch and make use of the full space inside. When I saw you house for the first time, that was my very first thought. I would omit that porch and make a flexible awning over the entrance door. So, when you move the house, that awning would come down and cover the entrance door.

Sure, hindsight is 20/20. But what are the take away lessons here? = When possible, mock-up and test fit. Something to consider for future contruction on your personal land. Seeing a photo or something drawn on paper is one thing. A cordboard and duct tape (or similar) mock-up is another. Or in a similar case as your book shelf, during construction simply holding a book in place would be a good visual reference for shelf placement.

You could still make some of those changes later. My grandpa started with one room and a wife and seven kids and ended up with a 4 bedroom house with a parlour, french doors and a fireplace. I love and agree with the changes you would do. Hind sight is always 20/20, isn't it. I am thankful you were able to have enclosed cabinets later. I love the concept of open cabinetry, but form follows function and the reality is dust gets things dirty. Do to lack of space my mixing bowls are on top of the fridge & I have a pit rack, which I LOVE. I cook a lot, so most pots/pans do not need cleaning before use, but a few I use less often may need dusting. Your front door... Clay could easily do that if you feel later that it would be worth the effort. We have propane heat...I feel your pain! We have dealt with that and run a dehumidifier. Windows with grids; I 100% understand. We were in that boat with our cabin here in the Smoky's. We had to replace our windows from single pane to double and we went with no grids for the reason you mentioned and I have LOVED it! One of our bedroom windows I never really acknowledged. Now, it's one of my favorites as when I wake up I can look out.

Thanks for sharing your perspective on these design consideration. It's quite helpful for people like me who are hoping to build a tiny house one day and are still in the design phase. I too don't particularly like the little bump-in front porch. This design feature has been around for a long time on at least one of the Tumbleweed models but it always seemed to me like it makes the interior of such a tiny space more cramped than necessary. It wouldn't really be too terribly difficult (for someone with moderate carpentry skills) to frame in the corner and move the door to the side, but it might be kind of tricky to get the new siding to interlace and blend in with the old siding. :(. I do think it's quite nice to have a small entrance roof over the front door but that could be attached on the outside and made to be foldable or removable.

As a felow tiny house owner in Montana I agree with your changes. Im running propane and have the exact issues you described, mostly around the baseboards and inside cabinets where the cold air lingers. Im also experiencing the issues you described with the windows as I too have wood encasement windows albeit no panes, thankfully. This summer I will be scraping off the poly and refinishing my encasements with clear, marine grade epoxy to help protect them from moisture. Since I installed a propane fireplace, switching it to wood won't be as easy.

Could you maybe do a video showing & explaining your ground setup ...like how your greywater runs off, how did you go about getting the house jacked up in the first place, why take the off the tires, what if any maintenance you need to do tire & “foundation” wise, is there anything else you do under the house that might be helpful up know, any utility setup or layouts you wish were more convenient/different? These are things that most might not think about but in deciding how to set up my future Tiny these questions about setup have come up so if love to get your perspective via video if possible & see yours. Thanks!
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
I could, but there's not much to show. The grey water just disappears right into the rocks the hill I live on is made from. The house simply rests on the corner jacks that are built into the trailer, much like any RV. The ground here is very rocky and solid so I did nothing else foundation wise. Never took the tires off as I have nowhere better to store then than on the trailer anyway. Otherwise, it's just bare ground under there. ;)

BnT Smith that’s all nice and I agree 💯% but I think that’s gonna cost lots of $. she’s set up for now. instead of rebuilding or redesigning she could use the money for her new land. to build infrastructure that she needs over there. a suggestion on your loft and the heat issue install a ceiling fan right in front of the loft. You can even make it controlled by a thermostat if you like. Put the thermostat in your loft. Running the fan forward on low can cool the area for summer and in reverse on low will bring in heat for winter.

Yes I have found hindsight is always happens when you try to plan and build something like whether it's a simple little dog house all the way to a mansion and even to everyday things that we have and use there is always something we want to change to make it work more efficiently. That's been my main problem while I am building my pickup camper as I go along something seems to come up that needs to be re-done and start over it just seems to come with the territory when I am working with no plans except what's in my mind and what I want to have and the functionality of everything inside due to the small space that comes with a pickup camper. Ariel, may I suggest for you try unless you have already have is to take some clear bubble wrap or even just some plastic sheets cut to fit your window panes sections. I have the same issues with my windows of moisture collecting really bad on the windows during the winter months. All of my windows are framed with aluminum frames so it is really bad and what I did to help with the moisture on the windows themselves is to take and cut clear bubble wrap and then spray some soap water on the flat side of the bubble wrap and then I would stick the bubble wrap onto the glass pane. Doing this has prevented the moisture from collecting on the window pane and having the water running over into the inside of the walls. Due to the aluminum frames around the windows they still frost over but not as bad as when the glass windows had nothing on them. The bubble wrap also helps keeps the warm air in and the cold air out to. and lets in light as well. In the spring time when it starts to warm up just peel off the bubble wrap till next winter real easy and cheap to do. Even in the winter time if you want to look out your window for a clear view just peel the plastic bubble wrap off and then just re-apply later, real easy and fast to do. Thanks again for another wonderful video Ariel. dd

Thanks for the idea. But as I said, since the installation of the wood stove, I've had no condensation issue for several years now. And also with wood heat, the house is always plenty warm, I have windows open a lot of the time, so not concerned about containing more heat. :)

Love your videos very helpful . Condensation problem get a dehumidifier it will get rid of condensation problems easy fix used extensively in rv and travel trailer. Cheap fix

That can work well if you have enough electricity to run one for sure. There has not been a mold or moisture problem of any kind for the last several years since installing the wood stove so it's no longer something I deal with. :)

Perfectly understandable wanting change. My nine year project is still evolving seems that is just the way it is. Good vid. Would sure like to see a list of your books. I'm a collector as well and love them all. Thanks again.

I'll have to snap a couple photos of all the books sometime. :)

Good things for me to consider thank you...I am still putting finishing touches on my plans for my tiny house guest cottage Mine will be a permanent structure i'm not making it mobile So i am working with that in mind...I also have a 32 foot gooseneck trailer that is an old travel trailer i plan on pulling off and using it to build something mobile ...Really like these videos about what people would do different...The last one you did on Nature's head or bucket composting helped me make up my mind there...Very Helpful Ariel thank you

I like your ideas. You should make those changes, and than do video about the changes you wouldn't have changed (just kidding). It's healthy to think about stuff you might do differently. Especially since you haven't any big regrets.

A couple of drawer fronts with hinges and then attach to the beams

Yup, like I said, all could be changed but I have no intention of investing the effort, time, or resources to do so at this point since overall, my house works very well for me. :)

That's why I opted for less windows without panes. Also, I painted my wooden frames on my windows so they are protected against moisture. That helps!

It would be easy and inexpensive to put lighting under the kitchen cabinets. I was so surprised in the great lighting I had when I added them to my kitchen. Plus, I made them dim-able so I can use them as a night light, too.
