The best way to freshen the air in your house is to open all of the windows for about about 20 minutes or so (yes, even in winter). You may want to put on a coat when you do this. You'll have a fresh smell like line dried sheets.
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
Yes! And with a good wood stove going, you probably won't even need the coat! :) I always have 2 or more windows open at least a little bit, even in the winter. The one by my bed is always open at least a little bit as I love the fresh air.

Count me as one of those canaries! I have a hard time walking down the cleaning aisle at the store due to asthma and scent sensitivities. I use a lot of vinegar, peroxide, and baking soda. Vinegar and baking soda is a great deck cleaner. You can buy baking soda for cleaning at the feed store (feed soda) really cheap!
@deborahfromdcspetersoncity92135 жыл бұрын
I worked in the food service industry and was also a caterer. I learned from my mom to use baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap to clean pretty much about anything and everything you can think of. I add one cup of vinegar to my whites in my laundry instead of bleach and it keeps them white quite nicely. If you don't like the smell of vinegar you can add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or any other extract of your choice. Nowadays you can get these items from any "dollar type store" in your area in most cities and that keeps the cost these items to about $5 to $6 with tax. I can say that I had never heard of soap nuts until I heard about them in your video. I enjoy your videos very much and I enjoy listening to you speak. You have a great speaking voice and are a natural in front of the camera/video recorder. Take care and be safe. 😊

It's that way for dogs I know. Dogs that run around on a farm or ranch, rolling in dead animals, running through corrals, catching rodents or whatever else they can, are almost never sick -- they still need their shots though, but town dogs that live inside and only get led on a leash, or put in their own kennel, are often sick. The ranch dog may have an old stinky deer leg he found somewhere with maggots on it - no problem, but change a full time house dogs brand of food, and they're likely to throw up and have the trots for a week.

Great stuff ! I've just started using vinegar to clean limescale, and as weedkiller, and it will kill mildew too - don't leave metal objects like steel or any kind of wiring connectors for hours in a cloud of drying vinegar though - it'll corrode some metals pretty nicely ! I use baking soda (sodium bicarb) as you said here, but also washing soda, which is sodium carbonate - this sprinkled as powder on moss outside will kill it, if the moss is in a bad place - blocking drainage, etc. Also, you can neutralise the acidity of vinegar after you've used it by wiping with either bicarb or soda (above mentioned stuffs) as they are alkaline. If you get a spill of anything acidic (it might happen !) this can be neutralised by bicarb (baking soda) poured on quickly. Use your own judgement about this folks! I'd never heard of 20% vinegar Ariel - that sounds a bit fierce. Mind you, in the uk you can buy 99% sulphuric acid as a drain cleaner - though you have to ask for it and it's plain wrapped and hidden out of sight in the store :o) I wouldn't dream of using it down a drain though - I wanted some to use diluted considerably to do some aluminium anodising at home :o) ps. sorry to hear that Grizzly is wary of even your tripod - what _has_ gone on in her past ??? You're good for her !

I'm a retired garbage man and I've had more than my share of germs from mold ,dirt, dead animals and regular house hold garbage and in my 30 years on the job I can only remember being really sick twice and I'm sure I caught it from my kids who caught it from friends at school . But now being a older and wiser I tend to shy away from crowds of people movie theaters shopping malls and i try not to touch things if I can get away with it too many foreign people coming from foreign lands with all these weird and bizarre and strange sicknesses tends to make me a little nervous . Like I said my kids went to a very diverse School meaning that the students were from all over the world they had Asians Ethiopians Chinese Russians polish virtually people from all over the globe at her school and during Christmas break Thanksgiving spring break they would go back to their Homeland pick up all the sicknesses then come back to school and infect everyone . But as a kid growing up in Rural America back in the 60s and 70s towns were very small and very few kids and we generally didn't get sick and we only and one doctor that did everything from stitching you up or putting a cast on you or pulling your teeth he did it all but mostly he slept on the bench in front of his little office because like I said nobody really got sick when I was a kid . But now one kids gets sick and it wipes out 3/4 of the school .

(yes I realize I'm commenting two years late) My mom is one of the canaries as well. I grew up with fragrance-free everything, and then rebelled for a little while because I wanted my laundry to smell like tide and my home to smell like fake lemon, but then I went back to something really similar to this - vinegar, baking soda, I do have some natural cleaners that I spent money on and sort of realize I didn't need to have got, and some elbow grease.

Not that we have experienced. My recipe is a little oil, a little vinegar (maybe 1 Tbsp each), a few drops of lemon essential oil in distilled water in a spray bottle. We SHAKE WELL, spritz a small area and "mop" with a rag. We follow up with another dry rag to finish off and polish up. This recipe was suggested to me by the flooring company.

Awesome video, Ariel! Love these topics. And I cannot wait for your laundry video! Over the past 2 yrs I’ve gradually switched out my cleaning products with homemade recipes using various combos of baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, and salt. A few years ago I stumbled across a little book in Barns & Nobles bargain section - “Salt, Lemons, Vinegar, and Baking Soda: A Reduce/Reuse/Recycle Handbook” by, Shea Zukowski. Completely worth the $6 I spent on it, and then some. I’ve always been an avid environmental/animal advocate and up until a few years ago I had been under the misguided impression that these very basic ingredients don’t do a thorough job of cleaning. How wrong I was! LOL Once I actually tested them up against some commercial cleaners and some store bought eco-friendly/natural cleaners, I realized they do just as great a job. Plus as you said, there’s the added benefits of reducing/removing unnecessary chemicals to the environment and our homes. I also use Dr. Bronner’s Lavender Castile Soap. I haven’t tried the soap nuts yet, but they’re on my list! The only chemical product I unfortunately still buy is Oxiclean bc I have 2 cats and they occasionally have hairballs ...... I haven’t found a recipe using any combo of the basic ingredients or any other safe, natural ingredients that removes that kind of stain. But I’m always on the lookout for one! Thank you for yet again another helpful and informative video! So very much appreciated.

Now a question, what do you use to wash your hands and do you wash your store bought produce with anything? Good video, thank you.

I like your cleaning methods. I am one of the canaries too. I noticed, however, that you mention essential oils a couple of times in the video. I just wanted to give a warning about them for us canaries. (Or anyone really.) Just because essential oils (maybe) come from botanical sources, does not mean that they are benign. Essential oils are so highly concentrated as to be pharmaceutical grade chemical cocktails. Without warning they can and do produce dangerous reactions like anaphylaxis. I know this not only from my own research, but from multiple scary instances involving me and other people I love.

Another hit out of the park, Ariel. Curious about your cork floor: how/with what is it sealed, and have you noticed an effects from Griz's claws on it? I have an unfinished room over my garage I'm hoping to finish (someday - project #258 lol) and was considering a cork floor. Any observations would be appreciated. Thanks!
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not sure what it's sealed with. I know cork naturally does not absorb water, but there is a bit of a shinier finish on top of this floor so I know it's not just raw cork on top. I am very happy with the floor. It's warmer to the feet in cold weather than wood, just a bit of give (not really noticeable to anything other than your joints as you move around), durable, and very easy to clean. I've not noticed really any wear yet.

Greetings! I have been watching your channel for a while and it is always informative! I was curious if you have heard of the myers briggs personality test? if so, do you know your type? You always explain things with clarity and precision! Thank you for making these videos on a regular basis! :)

Very wise advice, I like your tutorial Just wondering, are your summers there long enough to grow tomatoes? Also in ths video whats growing in the terracotta planter to your right?
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! And sadly, no way. It can frost every night of the summer. You can grow tomatoes only if you have a greenhouse here.
@damianbailey25246 жыл бұрын
Fy Nyth Oh that's to bad nothing like picking your own tomatoes. But good to know. So whats in that pot? Looks like some kinda allium
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I do miss being able to grow some of those warmer climate things. My pot inside? That's lemon grass actually!

Fy Nyth Nice.Ever try citronella geraniums, also known as mosquito geranium. Lemon scented leaves and makes a pretty neat house plant.
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
I know what they are and they do smell nice, but I'm actually growing the lemon grass for food use hopefully. I don't think anyone eats the geraniums....

For laundry info, check out these posts - fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/01/off-grid-laundry-in-tiny-house.html and fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/08/laundry-day-in-tiny-house.html . For groceries, I try to grow as much food as I can here, but since it's so cold here most of the year, I do still have to buy things as well. I get most things from local grocery stores in the closest town and do order some things online that I can't find here.

strange question for this site . sounds like your soon to be ex girlfriend and you do not share similar life goals.
@jeanettec62126 жыл бұрын
Sounds like she wants respect. This day and age people think you must sleep together since you date. Then wonder why so many diseases. She got wise and doesn't play house, she'll find the man who will treasure her!.

i don't think any of those cleaning supplies are going to fix that problem..... i agree with (jeanette c) you need to grow up....
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
I'll agree I don't see the relationship to cleaning, but in general if two people have long term goals that are diametrically opposite (like being married and not being married for example), then I don't see a close relationship working out. I would guess in the long run both people would be happier with someone who has a similar end goal. Just my perspective!

Ajax or bleach?
@FyNyth6 жыл бұрын
Do I use them? Never for normal cleaning. If there is a specific problem that I can not fix in some other way, I may use bleach to kill mold or something like that.

I’m sure you’re already aware but certain essential oils are harmful to dogs and cats- even airborne. Please research to see if your oils can be used w your pets. I have 2 diffusers and oils. Luckily, I didn’t use them before finding this info out. I would’ve felt so bad if I had harmed my pets!!😩
