What annoys me about most Clannad 'reviews' and comments are statements that it's so sad and depressing. That just shows that such people haven't really watched it and understood it because it's a really uplifting show when looked at as a whole and in the message that it contains.

The tendency that nowadays I see is how demanding people are with slice of life animes. It's like that kind of genre doesn't deserve to be popular. It only can be as famous as audiences want it to be. If it accomplishes to gain its usual niche, the boat remains still and if you ask anyone if they've seen it, they'll always say no. But then if it gains more appraise than usual, people star calling it overrated. Like, wtf man? Why people hate them so much? If it's not about action or big ass waifus, it's a piece of shit anime? Go f yourself

I'm in my 60s, and I only started watching anime a little over four years ago, and I can say that in the beginning I was just as cynical as the leads in these shows. But the life of color won me over too. Haruhi reawakened my imagination, and Clannad reconnected me with my emotions. Both were life changing.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my favourite slice of life animes out there. I love it’s wackiness but also it’s serious tones as well. The loop episodes in particular were bonkers to me and I had no clue it would’ve lasted for 8 episodes. These episodes never frustrated me, as my eyes were glued to the screen trying to figure out how Kyon was going to break the loop. PS The series’ phenomenal movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of the best anime movies ever produced. I’d watch the series alone purely for the sake of the film.

Haruhi is (anime) God. I had the bizarre privilege of binge watching the show in dub & in Chronological order when I had Covid in January of 2020. I really went into the show blind. I had heard about the Endless Eight episodes in passing, so I knew it was out there, but, strangely, I didn't know it was in Haruhi, so I didn't realize anything was "wrong" until I'd finished the 3rd or 4th episode of it & Googled it to try & figure out what the heck was going on! I can only imagine the panic & confusion of watching the exact same episode of an anime for TWO FULL MONTHS, having no idea what was going on or any way to find out. It must've been one of the greatest mindf**ks in TV history!! But Haruhi did change the playing field of my anime watching. By the time I discovered the series, everyone had already seen it & knit-picked it to death, but it was new to me. And as an outsider looking in, all the commentary of the show I listened to just left me more confused cuz I had no context to help make sense of everything they were saying about it. And, like you said, this show is freaking crazy! Every aspiring anime fan should be required to watch this show blind, because it's like a distillation of everything good about anime. So if you don't like it or can appreciate it, then hang it up, Sweetie. You might not be a fan of it, but if your plain hate it, go get another hobbie!

It's such a tradegy that such a Studio was involved in such an accident, it's truly an unforgiveable crime. As infamous as Endless Eight is within the anime community, I will always defend it as one of my favorite arcs of all time. Just the fact that each episode is individually animated and voiced alone is enough to squash the argument that KyoAni was somehow trying to "save money" on it. The way each successive episode feels more and more surreal is honestly astounding.

I will always defend it too. Yeah, watching it when it was airing would have suck, but it was clear what it was trying to do, and that intention should be praised. The endless 8 is the haruhiest thing the anime could have done, and that's a big W in Haruhi's universe.

Watching *that* episode of Clannad 2 became one of my core memories. I had to pause it and sobbed violently for about 15 minutes. I think I was around 14 at the time. it became one of my favourite shows and I rewatched season 1 many many times, played the ending dango song all the time, being simultaneously comforted and emotional. I haven't seen the show in many years, this makes me want to watch it again... kyoani has been my favourite studio ever since clannad. I haven't seen all their shows but every one I have seen has made an impact on me. there's just something about their slice of life stories that hits different.

I will actually come to Endless Eight's defense in a very specific context. Years ago, I stumbled across an upload of the entirety of Haruhi, in story order, edited together into effectively two 6-hour long movies, with the intros and outros cut out except for the start and finish. If I recall rightly, Endless Eight fell almost exactly on the halfway point of that marathon. Watching that saga play out in a dark living room while house sitting for friends on vacation, watching events repeat with a gradual growing strangeness, that slowly rising inkling of something wrong as each repetition reveals more of the mystery, aided by the slowly increasing melodrama of the English voice cast, was an anime watching experience I have never been able to recreate. No other series has formed such an atmosphere. And I've sometimes dreamed of putting myself in some isolated scenario, like a long ride on an Amtrak train far away from wifi or cell signal, just so that I can have nothing else to do but sit back and watch all of Haruhi again.

I'm so glad you mentioned the happy aspects of Clannad. When I try to sell the show to other people I let them known that, yes, it's famous as a tearjerker and it absolutely delivers in that area. But the reason I love it so much is that despite the lows, or perhaps partly because of them, the highs are incredibly high! No other show makes me feel as much pure joy as Clannad does. There were plenty of times watching it where I felt like my heart would burst from my chest I was so invested! I love those characters.

Must catch up on Klannad. Haruhi Suzumiya is irresistibly appealing. And an irresistible juggernaut. She hearkens back to Little Women's Jo March and Ann Of Green Gables. Hyouka's Eru Chitanda comes from a different mold. Equally insistent but much more demure. Steel sheathed in velvet, as an old poem goes. Chitanda is a muse, after the manner of Dante's Beatrice, or Quixote's Dulcinea. Perhaps Cyrano's Roxanne also.

Quite possibly the best patreon notification I couldve gotten. KyoAni has always been the unparalleled pinnacle of anime for me, and I dare say these 3 in particular have no doubt had by far the most influence on me out of any media I've ever consumed. I've always found it hard to put my finger on it, and seeing you talk about these 3 in the manner Ive tried to so many times is very satisfying. Their stories and characters are so vibrant, so genuine and authentic; theyre slow and laid back, but I unironically have never felt as connected to a series of ficitonal works as is the case with KyoAni's catalogue. You have a really nice way with words I think. Just when we want to give into the grey, KyoAni shows us how we can fill our lifes and worlds with colour, and they do it with industry-leading animation no less (I mean i cant be the only one fanboying over Hyoukas masterful directing and scene layouts right??). Amazing video man. Really, really good work.

Fantastic video, thank you for putting this together. This was the first video of yours that I've watched and it was so so welcome. I've watched anime since the late 80s then life got in the way, and only in the last 2 or so years has it come back into my life. I've watched 2 of these series, Haruhi about 6 months ago including the film and I loved both despite its idiosyncrasies. Then literally yesterday after years of hearing about it I watched all of Clannad Afterstory in one day, that was something else for sure. I'm still letting Clannad AS sink in, it was amazing and emotional and thought provoking. So thanks for this video, Hyouka has been on my watch list for some months now and will be next in line, I'm so looking forward to it. That's my biggest regret about these amazing series, once you've watched them you can't watch them with fresh eyes again. Oh what I wouldn't give for a memory wipe device (like from Men In Black). And finally Kyoani are such a special studio. I remember the tragedy of 3 years ago on the news but little did I know what impact their amazing work would soon come to have on me and my life. Please keep making great videos like this, it's so good to be reminded of their work.

"I avoided Clannad for the longest time /because/ of its status as a heartbreaker" - also the reason why it took my bf and I over a week to watch this video. "I just don't feel like crying right now" - Because Clannad does have the status of being one of the saddest. But seeing the essay on it, I'm half tempted to watch it.

Do it right now. One of the best TV shows I've ever seen. I suggest you to play the visual novel too. If you will like the anime, you'll definitely fall in love for the game.

Love love love your videos. Always a joy to watch. I haven't seen any of these series yet but I've wanted to give them a try for a while, probably gonna start Hyouka soon as it seems right up my alley.

Clannad - I forget that my brother and I watched it a year or so ago - we did not get to finish it - exactly like K-ON! I think we watched and watched it delaying the end sequence and it got removed from Netflix. Haruhi was the first one I came across as a result of watching Linda, Linda, Linda (2005) which a review of, pointed out Haruhi paid homage to it in their Love Alive episode - which got me watching The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (before it was re-released and due to no supply in sight was on KZbin back then) .. did not know a thing about the show but I was fortunate to spot that whatever they were talking about - you just could feel the quality and care - it was important and I wanted to know why and stayed up all night watching it making mental notes all they way through - "there in lies a story .. find out later".

Still baffles my mind with how there's nothing out there that even comes close to connect with me the way their works do. And just when I though I have uncovered all the details there are in Haruhi, that Tanabata bamboo tree blows my mind once more after all these years.

This video is wonderful, it’s one of those special ones that feels like it was made specifically for me. After watching well over 100 shows, these three are still my favorites. In the exact order you spoke about them, no less. Thanks for showing these three some love, I was hanging on every word, especially in clannad’s section. I’m glad you talked about how funny it was. I’ve always seen it as a show/game that can make you feel every kind of emotion, not just heartache. I’ve dedicated a lot of time making videos myself that try to highlight these often ignored aspects of it. I hope this one gets all the attention it deserves Oh, also, that transition at 17:10 was so smooth I didn’t even have a chance to laugh lmao

You stated that you avoided watching clannad for the longest, and I did as well. However, within the first 3 episodes, I was mesmerized. After countless rewatches, I never get sick of it. The way the series brings me so much joy, as well as a multitude of other emotions, was a first me.

I am currently on a Kyoto Animation binge so I really enjoyed the video. I started with the highly underrated Beyond the Boundary, then moved on to Hyouka. Then it was on to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya after that (including the amazing Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya) and wrapping it all up I just currently finished K-ON!! I still have Tamako Market, Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Liz and the Bluebird, and Sound Euphonium left to go out of my collection. I keep hearing great things about Clannad but the charcter designs always threw me off. Perhaps I will look into that someday soon.

those sparks are increasingly rare as you get older, less and less heart in everyone and yourself. impossible for some who are born into unusual brain patterns perceiving things incorrectly or not at all. I've watched these hollows since I was born, became a companion for some as a young adult and now I'm becoming one too. Few of us get to even witness these sparks at a distance. The countless walking corpses should show you that.

Clannad and Haruhi Suzumiya are two of my favorite anime to this day. Clannad really brought me comfort in HS and I loved it so much initially bc it was the first anime I saw that actually showed the couple get together and what happens when they're adults. Its also the first piece of media that made me cry like that. Haruhi Suzumiya impacts me until this day because I essentially wanted to be her. Having adventures with friends and also never repeating a hairstyle which I dont do irl. Upon re-watching it this year it feels like Haruhi is neuro-divergent coded with ADHD perhaps which made me love it even more. Endless 8 is still terrible to go through tho lol. Please give multiple of these shows a chance you wont regret it.
@boobah5643

The thing that really gets me about the Endless 8? The light novel doesn't make you suffer through it like that. Sure, it's clear that they went through those days tens of thousands of times with only the most minor of changes... but dude doesn't torture his readers with that. The 'torture,' such as it is, is having Kyon's various ideas for what's missing from his perfect summer vacation fail one after another. Also, I suspect it's less tedious if you don't watch all eight episodes more-or-less in one sitting.

So first time I've seen one of your videos, it was suggested by the algorithm, but you talked about 3 of the animes close to my heart. Clannad being my favourite as watched in more then 20 times obsessive you could say. But I see it a fresh every time never boring me ... and I was late to the party with this only discovering it 4 years ago. But just like your video it's enjoyable content.. just as a suggestion or even if you haven't watched it I think a video on I want to eat your pancreas is another beautiful piece you should look into..
