I am glad I visited Venezuela twice (1975 and 1996). In 1975, Venezuela had a robust economy because of high oil prices and free markets that brought them prosperity. That made Venezuela one of the wealthiest nations in Latin America. In 1975, One Venezuelan tour guide told me that we wanted to nationalize oil companies someday, and his view became a reality when Chavez came into power. 1996 Venezuela was reasonably okay, but there was massive poverty, and the economy was disarrayed. The majority of cars were made in the 1970s. In January 1996, I explored Mt Roraima, a region located on the border of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil, and I visited Angel's Falls and the Canaima Resort. I traveled alone with my backpack with little or no foreign language knowledge except my deafness.

This video lacked some very important political details. It doesn't mention why the country in facing such economic turmoil today, and the whole world knows that is is because of the the US sanctions that are aimed at advancing the corporate interests of big oil. We know that Hugo Chavez changed national economic policy to nationalize the oil industry, and big oil was mad, used the US government to adopt hostile policies to pressure the country. The cheerleaders, specifically the UK has even stolen Gold reserves for Venezuela (a crime) in pursuit of such sanctions. If it was not for the US and its clonies, Venezuela is so rich today than most of the western countries. These details do not show in this video.

Embargoes are the main culprit of this story. I don't like the direction the country took with policies, but we should leave it up to them to live with the consequences or prosperity of their decisions and not impose embargoes that cause outrageous inflationary responses.
@eddihaskell
@eddihaskell 9 ай бұрын
I would say disasterous economic policies -- such as printing money with no value behind it to make good on unsustainable social promises-- is the real culprit. Then, taking over an oil industry without compensating the owners, and assuming you have the know-how and markets to do this on your own is foolhardy. This triggered a capital flight out of the country, and resulted in massive hyperinflation. It is a vicous cycle. Venezuala was once the wealthiest nation in the Carribean and South America, with Concorde flights. Now, it is a basket case. Don't simply blame the USA for an "embargo" -- it is not that simple.
@HomeRestoredSecurity
@HomeRestoredSecurity 9 ай бұрын
@eddihaskell Venezuela followed the Norwegian economy plan to make a sovereignty fund for their oil reserves. This was lambasted by the US. Venezuela started printing an oversupply of cash after the U.S. embargo took effect.

1. Corruption 2. Misnagement of the money supply - you can't spend more than you take in. This is why someone's compariosn of Venezuala to Norway didn't make sense. 3. Policies that encourage the flight of foreign investment and capital 4 Policies that encourage the migration of a nation;s tknowledge workers and others who have had their assets swized without compensation. I can go on and on but Venezuala did not go from the richest nation in tSouth American and the Carribean to one of the poorest in a generation simply because of an "embargo". Financial@@dogsand77

The venezuelan people know that the territory was stolen they arent ignorant, they dont believe its part of their current nation. The Brits stole the land during a conspiracy with the russian dealmaker in a convention where Venezuela wasnt even invited, The brits bought that land from the Dutch. The Dutch did not claim anything west of the esequibo river as it was in venezuelan hands. Because venezuela didnt have authorities settled in the area the British sent explorers to implant settlements.

Wrong again. Their exports dropped because their production dropped. They did not have the skilled workers to maintain the equipment that they confiscated from the oil companies. Venezuela’s crude oil is thick and requires special refining processes. The skilled workers needed for that refining process do not want to work for the cheap wages offered by Venezuela. So now Venezuela has to sell its crude oil for extra cheap prices, because the buyer knows they have to do the refining themselves. The Venezuelan government has themselves to blame.
@DiegoCardona-pe9vr
@DiegoCardona-pe9vr 9 ай бұрын
You’re partially right. It’s not really bc we didn’t have skilled workers, which is the case in other countries like Guyana or Nigeria. In fact, it went pretty well in the 70s for us and we were one of if not the richest in South America. The wages wouldn’t have been a problem if there was a strong economy in the first place. The real reason behind this is our big reliance in the oil industry, leaving other industries underdeveloped. Our economy was pretty much dependent on oil prices. Also, the expropriations and the great debt we accumulated were other key factors that explain what’s going on

Perfect example of ignoring facts, logic, merit, common sense, long plans, education, and put everything else stupid before. Venezuela cannot be saved from Venezuela. They need a radical, but logical new government with actual intelligent leaders. Period.

Bull shit! I don't like Chavez. That's for sure, but I lived in Venezuela 25 years ago and I can tell you that long before Chavez came to power the country had already ceased to be what it was in the 70s. In the 90's was already in deep trouble. Long before Chavez came to power, in 1994, half of the banking system went bankrupt. In other words: Chavez was a consequence of a previous situation. He just made things even worse!

Venezuela is democratic only on paper. No real opposition parties are allowed. The dictator has communist style police, secret police and armed forces who keep him in power. Also has special presidential guard composed of Cuban soldiers.

The people who made this documentary didnt come to Venezuela. Crime rate in Venezuela for example, has droped to the lowest in 30 years. Homicide rate has come down from 60 homicides every 100,000 people in 2019, to 5.2 homicides every 100,000 people. They still say its the most dangerous countries in the world when its homicide rate is 5 to 6 times lower than Colombia, Ecuador or Mexico... its even lower than US, and that has been reported by international news sites like swissinfo, bbc or infobae. There is some truth, like the electricity, water and gas problems, that is real, but whats not accurate is that you cant use international credit cards because almost every business accepts it. ATMs are about 80% offline, but there are other ways to get cash, either in exchange business like italcambio, Wells Fargo and even local business that have Zelle can accept a transfer in exchange of cash... but its true that you need to bring low bills, ones and 5, because you will get your change back, but if they dont have small bills they'll give your change in bolivares, wich is good to pay also. Another thing is that inflation rate is not 10,000%, that was years ago... right now its 180% and its coming down every year. Bolivar is right now 36.3 per dollar, and its been like that for 6 months. This documentary is mixing some truth with a lot of things that were true a long time ago, but not now.

By the way, people in Venezuela are the opposite of depresed. Everywhere you go there's people smiling, dancing... restaurants and nightlife is florishing. And that thing about people in Venezuelan jungle eat human flesh, COME ON, that's just absurd. Our indigenous population is EDUCATED, they even speak their tribe dialect and english, spanish and even french. Our pemon tribes of amazonas are the ones that are allowed to give tours and expeditions for tourist and cientists. The goverment gave them the care of national parks of the southern regions. Even the Yanomami tribe that was discovered around the mid 20th century is now a culture that keeps their culture but are aware of modern civilization. They have access to public education and healthcare. That was nonsense.
