Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. His philosophies seem to transcend ego, politics and limitations. His monologues have a powerful way of connecting distant abstract ideas with the present moment and his words have a unique way of putting life into perspective. Life is a gift.

Life is usually not what job you have, what field you get into career-wise, how great your title becomes. Life is somewhere in between. The songs you sing, the runs you run, the kites you fly, the people you laugh with, the stories you hear, the tales you tell to inspire, the dreams you have at night, the pets you adopt, the plant you finally managed to keep alive, the dinner that finally tasted good, the feeling of hopefulness, of gratitude, of amazement. It happens in between.

Good point, but that song is called "I'm Only Sleeping". An even more cosmic Beatle song can be found on the same album (Revolver) -- it's called "Tomorrow Never Knows": Turn off your mind, relax, and float down stream It is not dying, it is not dying Lay down all Thought, surrender to the Void It is shining, it is shining If you may see the meaning of within It is Being, it is Being That ignorance and hate they mourn the dead It is Believing, it is Believing That Love is all that Love is everyone This is knowing, this is knowing All plays the Game: "Existence" to the end Of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning... Or even "I Am The Walrus": I am He as you are He and you are me and we are all together. Even John Lennon backed off writing: I am Him as you are Him, and you are me...etc. I think "Elohim" originally meant "our Higher Selves"

His words always bring me such comfort, I’ve always felt like a failure because I haven’t travelled as much as I said I always wanted to because I haven’t had the money and confidence to do so. But now I’m in my 30’s I’ve realised I don’t think I ever really wanted to travel i just said that because that’s what I thought success was. I just enjoy a simple homely life, it’s taken me all these years and videos like this for me to accept myself for exactly who I am and realise it’s okay to live a simple life. If you don’t travel or earn a lot of money like society says you have to now it’s okay, just do what ever you want to do, there is no race or competition. It’s still hard for me to remember this but I’m getting better and accepting myself more everyday ❤

the thing is, for me, living alone or maybe with some pets, and good headphones, and just a small, comfortable house near a lot of grass and trees, just a lot of nature, would be the peak of my life, people take it the wrong way when someone says live how you want, they usually go for your approach, travelling a lot and doing stuff like sky diving, thinking it's the only way to live, of course, you're probably very happy with what you did, it most likely was exactly what you wanted , and from your words it seems like so, but people think doing stuff like that will make them happy when in reality they can't even appreciate their hometown, so they go to places like japan, they look at a building and some peach blossoms and they think they saw everything there is to see when in reality they barely looked at the surface, and their hometown's maple trees would be beautiful to japanese people, what im trying to say in this bible i just realized i typed is, people think doing what you did is perfect for everyone, when in reality, only a couple of people in thousands really truly enjoy it, also, camping seems fun!

THIS is why, to me, being disabled is a BLESSING. I CAN'T work a shitty 9-5 that I hate, just to barely make the rent... I get my $500 a month and its not a lot but that's what I've got and I'm not chained to any monotonous profession... I'm free to explore my passions, though I'm limited by my body in many ways, and I can live my life moment by moment. I'm limited in where I can live and things I can afford by my income but money isn't the key to happiness or success. I'm counting my god damn blessings.

@@ancientgear7192 One can still do *some* other work, surely. I imagine it all becomes a matter of meeting such needs as they come. I'm 24, and I've lived a very happy life with not very much money or work experience at all. I've worked a job for maybe about two and a half years out of my life. But I've never mooched off of anyone, never made a disturbance of myself, just sort of 'met the needs as they came'. Odd jobs here and there, and a sense of 'if I don't absolutely need it I won't buy it.' Forsaking a car and even taking the bus for simply walking to where I'm going. More time to think. It's not for everyone. Nor is it commendable or merit-worthy or anything like that. I simply meet these things as they come and don't worry about it in the mean time. As soon as you start overplanning and overbudgeting and falling into the manic race of things, money and its uses can become a terrible cage. I went to university on the government's dime. I'm fifty grand in debt. It doesn't bother me remotely, because somehow, I'm still not starving to death.

Thanks for sharing ur perspective, its a valuable one! I think a lot of people that can work hide away in their work- unconsciously to avoid discovering who they are and what they would do if money were no object. I'm learning to divorce my identity and vision of a joyful lifestyle from being to tightly married to work and money...sounds like you didn't have the option of not learning! Hope you enjoy a life of living your passions 💖✨

Then you’re stuck with more debt. Bad cycle we’re in. You seem like a wise and caring parent. Sadly, some believe good parenting is about forcing their kids to collect achievements that they can flaunt. Never do they stop to reflect on what this kind of parenting does to their kids. As was pointed out in schooloflife, this leads to an impression that love is no more deserved than the sum of ones achievements. They become desperate to please and impress others, and ultimately miserable when they don't recieve the admiration and love they feel that they have earned.

Life itself, yes, but one still does have to "make a living" do to food, clean water, elec, internet, shelter, etc not being free. The issue of learning how to survive or make a living is something that can be solved. From there, ethics would be introduced, as some ways which are illegal may be an easier way to make money, but they're sketchy. Or one may make great gains, but at the expense of others. Therein lies some of the complexities

"We thought of life by analogy with a journey, with a pilgrimage that had a serious purpose at the end and the point was to get to that end! Success or whatever it is, or maybe heaven after your dead... but we miss the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing, or to dance while the music was being played"

I'be spent literal decades of my life believing I was a failure because, every time I felt like I had finally got on the path that would lead me to The Peak of Achievement In My Life (y'know, the best position in the career that would get me the big house and dream lifestyle I was supposed to be working for...) something felt hollow and 'off,' and I would bail. My life, as a result, has a been a series of treks partway up mountains. I've never seen the top of any of them... but on the flipside, I've seen a lot of different mountains, and met a lot of great people along the way. I'm not a poster girl for greatness, and never will be, but I think I'll have some great stories for grandchildren someday.

I was recently in a nursing home for rehab with a broken hip. Nothing made sense. The smartest person working there was the woman who cleaned the floors. I was miserable and she told me to breath. " Just learn to breath and you'll be fine". Boy, was she right. Lack of O2 is life changing. Breath.

*elany* me too and I don't know how but I can think of two exemples of people I know personally: both of them work about half/three quarter of the year and travel rest of the time. One lives in a very big truck turned into an appartment studio (by choice), so the "rent" is extremely low. One is a teacher (who replaces teachers when they are on leaves), the other is a nurse. or there is also the option of saving for a while and then traveling, and maybe getting jobs (lke student jobs: waitressing, babysitting, i dunno) at the said places so you can stay longer...

Pttt! Don't make me laugh! It's not a movie, movies happen without your involvement. It's not popcorn, you can only eat so much popcorn before your tounge goes numb to the taste and your lips start to sting. Life is about.... whatever you want. Love, joy, peace, patience, all things good. Being disciplined. The options are all there, and You get to decide, and then take wonderful action to move the mountains around you. We all feel sorry for the man who wastes his life, or the people who die in vain. That's because life is valuable, to sit back and watch it like a movie is comparable to spilling the ingredients for your favorite Desert on the ground because you haven't baked it yet, and it doesn't taste the way you want it to.
