Learning to sew helped me get through the early years of being an empty nester. It provides an outlet for creativity, fuels my love for fashion, challenges me in different ways than my job and other activities, and relaxes me.

Hi Angela - I really enjoyed this video. Even though I’ve only been sewing for a short while I love it so much and it’s wonderful tapping into the creative side of my brain which has barely been used for many many years.

Hey there! I started sewing many, many years ago when I was in junior high school but I had such an awful, demeaning teacher that I hated it. I didn't sew on my own again until I was in college and I made some tops and slacks for myself. They weren't perfect by any means but they were definitely wearable. I've been a quilter for the past 30 years or so but within the past few years, I started making clothing for myself. I feel like I do okay with that but need to start challenging myself with more intermediate makes. That's my sewing history in a capsule; thanks for sharing yours. Happy Sewing!!

Hi Deb! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. It's too bad your teacher was so awful! I'm happy you didn't give up because of that 😊 and there's nothing wrong at all with taking your time. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Thank you for your thoughtful insights! 🥰 I learned how to sew as I was growing up; it was in the same vein as normal housekeeping jobs/skills like ironing, basic gardening and cooking. And several generations before me all sewed what they needed for house and self as well. We're talking Midwest farming families, for context, and I started sewing in the 70's So I didn't think of it as anything special, I guess. Sewing was also something I did when there wasn't anyone else around. My own time. I have more time to devote to it now, and I feel it's more like recreation. Like reading or music. 😘

Hi Lynn! I loved hearing your experience, thank you so much for sharing! It's interesting how sewing has changed over the years, from a necessity to more of a recreational hobby. It's nice that you continued sewing for fun. I appreciate you! ❤️

@@JustMeAndMyFabric Thanks! It's still stunning to me how I can look down on most days and realize that I've made everything. 😲 I still remember going to Cloth World with my mom when I was in high school to pick out a pattern and fabric to make it in 🥰 I enjoy your chats with us!!

I barely remember not sewing. My mother taught me to embroider when I was about 4 or 5 I think and I loved it from the beginning. Mama sewed most of our clothes and she knitted beautiful sweaters. My aunt did gorgeous cross stitch and crewel. Mamaw crocheted nice cozy afghans and the most delicate tablecloths and doilies you ever saw. She also tatted and I have a baby bonnet she did that my mother had framed. (I'd show a picture if I had any idea how to attach one :D ) My father was in the navy so I didn't grow up near family but, through sewing, I have a profound feeling of connection ( a "thread" ?) reaching back through centuries of creative women and it feels nice.

Hi Angela, thank you for this great video 🙌🏻. I did sew a little when I was a teenager, and I tried again when my daughter was young. But, I really got back into it during the pandemic. I love it so much that I don’t think I can stop now. It is so liberating to make clothes that fit better than store bought, right? And I am still a beginner… Take care 💞💞
