We have loved doing Fred as a family this oast year. We will finish the Apples through Jellyfish by Christmas for sure. I have also done the more advanced books and in particular the Algebra is one of my favorite books he has written. Our children have done other maths because we truly enjoy the peacefulness of having ten or fifteen of set of similar problems to practice each day outside of Fred. We have been doing about two chapters of Fred daily and it is such a fun group subject.

We are in love with Life Of Fred Series. We have now completed the first 6 books. Your review was one of the KZbin videos I watched and your passion for Fred was one of the reasons why I brought Apples to give it a try. Fred did not disappoint. My daughter (and me!) love it! Thank you for this detailed review. With love from one homeschool mother to another 💗

Love this! Thank you. We are breezing through Fred. So I was getting nervous it wasn’t rigorous enough. My daughter loves busy work (oddly enough) but then she is often guessing the answers and I want her to really UNDERSTAND. I’m hoping this is the right one for us!

Thanks for watching! Remember LoF is created by a college Professor, so that gave me a bit more peace about "is it enough." Remember, all kids are different and not all learn the same way. You can add to it if you really can't trust the process or you can choose something else. With LoF, I purchased a book at a time, which helps just in case it didn't work for us. :)

I loved your point about parents thinking it's not enough math. We just started Apples a couple weeks ago, and when I realized how quickly we will finish it, I started to wonder that, too! Your explanation was very reassuring. :)

We equate quantity with quality and it's simply not true. We need for our children to master what they don't know and sometimes overloading them gives an adverse reaction. So, slow and steady, is what I believe in. Also practice makes progress. A little practice can go further than fifty problems. Thanks for watching!

Yes it does. We absolutely love Fred. My son is now using the Pre-Algebra series and moving on along in it.

Tutor Mom - we use it as a supplement. I find it hard to use it as our main curriculum. I am a bit old fashioned when it comes to learning math. 😬

Classroom Unbound- I definitely understand. It is not my only curriculum, but it is my spine for math and language arts. I have had to get used to it, believe me. But even as a supplement, it will do wonders.

I was home-schooled through 8th grade and HATED math for as long as I did it. We always used Abeka growing up, and with my oldest child now entering Kinder, I am looking into LOF. Thank you for this info.

Such a great review!! Thanks so much for taking the time to give us your thoughts and opinions. I've been looking for a new math for my 2nd grader, as she really doesn't want to keep doing worksheet after worksheet. Life of Fred seems like a great fit 😃

Hey there- I'm so glad I found your channel. I was looking up info on Life of Fred, and there you were! This is great information and I love the way you presented it. I am trying to figure out how to place my daughter, then I'll place an order soon. I'll probably use it more as a supplement since we are using Singapore as our main math, but I also have an outside-the-box kid who needs something a little different. This might be the thing we need.

Hi MomZest. I am glad you found me. I love Life of Fred. My son is an "outside of the box" kiddo too and traditional math just did not work with him. He had the pleasure of learning with his older siblings when he was younger. LOL. But give Fred a try. This is my son's full curriculum, but supplementing is great too. Thank you for commenting and I will be posting more soon! Blessings!

@@TeacherMom You said in another reply that one book would not cover a full year, so I'm curious how you use this as a full curriculum. Do you just go through more than one book each year? What happens if he finishes all the books before he has "graduated"? We live in a state where the kids have to do so many hours of each subject to get credits.

Hi Tutor Mom! Thanks so much for such a great review! I have a 12 year old daughter who has been using Teaching Textbooks since 3rd grade. She hated math before that (though she has always gotten almost perfect scores) and Teaching Textbooks helped. This year however, all the fraction concepts have hit her hard, and I believe it is the way they are teaching it. I was looking into the the Life of Fred to see if she might find math enjoyable someday! Would you recommend starting at her age level or with the first book? Does a book last a whole year or go at your pace and do what you can in a year? Thanks for the help! Blessings!

Hi MuppinsMommy! Thank you for watching and I am so glad you enjoyed the video. Fractions are those concepts that really need to be mastered before moving on into Algebra 1 or higher math. Being that your daughter is really not liking math right now, I would suggest that she starts from the beginning, which is the LOF: Apples and work her way up. I make that suggestion because the focus should be lighting the fire of learning in her, and starting the beginning book would certainly do that. The early series will build her confidence, because they are concepts that she will know, such as 5 + 2 = 7 and etc, so she will fly through and because it is "easy" to her, it will build her up. Each book in the elementary series is 19 chapters long, except for the first book Apples, which is 18 chapters. One book does not cover a whole school year, but let's take that out of the equation for a moment...just focus on her enjoying the Life of Fred. She will move quickly and that's great, because you want her to hit LOF: Fractions which will help solidify her understanding of fractions. This is the beauty of home education....to go the beat of our children's "educational" and learning drum. Let her enjoy the reading of Fred, because trust me, she will learn so much more than the math. You can see if your public library carries them, which can save you money, or you can do what I did, purchase one book at a time. When I saw that we were getting into the last few chapters of the book, I would put in my order so that it could get to me on time and we wouldn't have any waiting days. Also remember, that you can go through the Intermediate series also. I will do a video on the three book series and hopefully have it posted by Friday. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions, please ask away. (((hugs)))

According to my research, the two curriculums are very different. I will link detailed reviews. If you have a kinesthetic hands on visual learner Math-U-See or RightStart is a better fit, especially if your child dislikes reading. Thanks so much for this review. I'm really leaning towards LOF for the 17-18 school yr. I was going to just go with where we are going to leave off, but have decided to start with Apples. I'm wanting this to be our main curriculum, but will pull things off the internet if needed. Do you believe it can be used as a full curriculum? (By itself)
@TeacherMom
@TeacherMom 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Maryland Momma! Yes. It can definitely be used as a full curriculum. The author intended it be that way too. It is a "Think outside of the box" curriculum, so I believe it is harder as parents to accept this. I use LOF exclusively for my 9th grader and we started with LOF in the sixth grade. I think you would benefit from the LIfe of Fred facebook group. Please hop on over if you are on FB and join thousands of us. Welcome to the Life of Fred community. :)

Is there a workbook that goes along with the LOF books? Do you do math problems after reading the stories?
@TeacherMom

There is not a workbook. After each reading there is a Your Turn To Play that consists of problems related to what was read.
@TheStephanieAnnFoster

@@TeacherMom However, several people on TeachersPayTeachers have created worksheets of their own. I'm not necessarily recommending them (part of the idea of LOF is no worksheets), but I thought that people might want to be aware of that resource.
