One thing I am always puzzled, or bewildered by, is how Trotsky has staid in jails and exiles so often and yet was lucky not to have his health destroyed as happens so often. He does not look like he was a particularly strong man physically, so either he had a very good immune system or just very lucky.

How long was he in prison? Also, prison under even the authoritarian Czarist regime was child's play compared to the horrid prisons and camps under Bolshevik (especially Stalinist) rule. Of course, there is no such thing as a "good" or kind prison. But time spent in Czarist prisons by Trotsky, Lenin or Stalin were not likely to be a lethal as time in a Soviet prison or camp in the 1930s.

Mercader didn't pretend to be a journalist. He posed as a French businessman named Mornard and as such he had seduced for the two previous years one of Trotsky's secretaries, Sylvia Ageloff, driving her every day to Trotsky's house in Mexico and slowly becoming familiar to Trotsky's household. One day he told Trotsky he had written an article on economics and he wanted him to check it out. Because of the small favors Mercader has done to Trotsky's household he agreed...and the rest is history

Stalin's victims were never random, it was mostly by association. That's why it was so scary. If you knew someone who was a so called "enemy of the state" you could become a target. His old comrades from the revolution had to go as well, he replaced them with people who were loyal to him

Can you add a video on Bela Kuhn and the short lived First Hungarian Communist government to your lengthy list? There is very little published on him. I’ve just started reading “The Vanquished - Why the First World War failed to end” by Robert Gerwarth. It’s about the many conflicts immediately after the First World War as a result of the collapse of Germany, Austro-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire as well as the Russian revolution. The whole idea of the Armistice only seems to have applied to the big players, for many the war dragged on.

Trotsky was never supposed to be the successor of Lenin. 1st every position in communist party was appointed by a vote (democratic centralism) not by succesions and such 2nd: Lenin indeed criticized stalin by calling him very brutal but his name was not the only one in the list, he even criticized Bukharin and Trotsky among others, in his words "Trotsky was not a bolshevik". 3rd Stalin was very disappointed by the criticism of his mentor, his next step was to resign from his position but the party voted against such it, even Trotsky voted in favor of stalin. 4th Trotsky was exiled because he broke the principle of democratic centralism.

Some very good points! Glad you took the time to reply. By designated successor I meant that to outside observers it was expected Trotsky would be voted in. Just like after Mao’s death China observers were flabbergasted when none of the Gang of 4 took over, but Mao appointed a man they never heard about. I should have specified, perhaps, but hopefully it did not distract from the bigger picture.

@@StopFear If you search the history between Lenin and Stalin you'll see that they always had a controversy between them .In total you will see that Lenin insulted Trotsky about 200 times in his letters to him. Lenin called Trotsky politicheskaya prostitutska (political prostitue),yudunska (judas) and many other names .You can find those letters in the marxist internet archive.

shadowalker 101 Listen. It is not whether I believe you it was the case or not, but can you be more specific to show where it is since you are so sure it was the case? I mean of course I heard it being claimed documentaries. But that is very different from finding where the evidence is of Lenin having that specific view on Trotsky. The source is important because if someone shows some soviet history book that was printed after a certain year in USSR then we can pretty much know in advance that of course it will state that Lenin disliked Trotsky and most likely that he LOOVED Stalin. Would that be a good source? Any rational person would say no. Now if we were to look at some writings by Lenin perhaps before Stalin coming to power we could put more credence to it BECAUSE it may have been printed by Lenin’s fans in other countries surrounding USSR so we could always compare what was actually printed and what was available from soviet sources after Lenin died.

One thing I research about Trotsky that he was very arrogant and elitist toward party members , had many enemies inside the Bolsheviks, on the contrary Stalin was party man , Stalin offer to resign 3 times because he was a man of the people he won favor inside the Bolsheviks. Growing up always thought Stalin was a bad guys most of it had been funnelled by the propaganda of the West .

The USSR fell to counter Revolutionarys without much opposition since Stalin wiped out all political power from the Workers. Stalin's Bureaucracy went on to steal steal and steal under Putin. As Trotsky spat at Stalin he sowed the seeds as the Gravedigger of the Revolution. The Soviet Union is gone but the Soviet Union of the Planet is coming over the horizon!

It was his political crimes that far ouweighed his murderous thuggery. He deliberately set out to destroy the Bolshevik Party and his attempt to achieve socialism in one country and its corollary peacefull co existence with Capitalism and refuse to spread the Revolution lead to the end of the USSR. Trotsky's description of Stalinism as Syphillus in the Working Class is apt today. Setting back World Revolution and the building of the Soviet Union of the Planet by at least 50 years.@@LAFC.

The biography misses the collaboration of Trotsky with the Nazis, who he called out to invade the Soviet Union in 1938, because "it would capitulate in a few weeks". At the end of his life he got an expert in anti-communism, rotten by jealousy (Stalin won the vote Trotsky had demanded in 1924 by nearly 100%), who's "works" are used by reactionaries and counter revolutionaries to the present day as an almanach to spread their retarded ideologies.
