All this research and work, and you still end up messing it up. Seen a lot of opinions from experts and fans, none are too happy about the designs of it. Not only for the T.rex but most dinosaur models looked a bit off and more so, seems to pertain to our traditional understanding than to modern research. Regarding these animals, calculated scientific prediction should be preferred than choosing outdated known ideas.

There wasn't a lot of actual research put into this one, I'm afraid. Look a the 3D model they proudly present on this video. They didn't look enough into the subject to understand how sauropsid facial tissues work. Even where the eyes go in the orbits. That's something hard to mess up if you know your animal anatomy! I don't really hold it against them though, because knowing the field of special effects and animation, they probably weren't given half as much time and resources to do this work as they'd have needed to pull it off properly, but I'd appreciate it if they didn't try to mislead people with ads like these.

Almost all the dinosaurs are bad cause they were done poorly or because they are literally slightly modified JW models. The only good models are the Plateosaurus and a bit of the Arkansaurus.

As an educational presentation, it's really hypocritical of them to even consider how intimidating the creature looks when it should be entirely focused on what the animal most likely looked like. This is purely conjecture, but I suspect that they tried it and came up with a design that looked too similar to Prehistoric Planet's and they didn't like that, despite the fact that the series went to extraordinary lengths to present the most accurate and advanced animals along with some educated speculation. That's why it's so beloved, well, that and the CGI is nearly indistinguishable from reality. I mostly enjoyed this documentary, but I suspected that this is the direction they took as soon as I saw that rocky T-rex with angler fish teeth and I can't help but be disappointed that they didn't take cues from the most recent landmark in paleo media.

I think the life on our planet T.rex is definitely unique looking I just wish so badly we'd seen more of it in the show other than the hunt scene. Courtship display then that's it they're all dead from the extinction event... :/ We barely got to see much of it in my opinion, also shouldn't the young T.rex of been feathered?

Feathered young is not really known to be true, especially considering in birds these feathers get replaced by the adult ones, where would that be on a modern rex where we knew the adults were not feathered?

If juvenile Tyrannosaurus were feathered, and that's a big if considering we don't have many skin impressions from Tyrannosaurus at any age, then they probably lost feathers as they reached a certain size to prevent overheating. Larger animals retain heat better than small ones, so it's likely that this was the reality for Tyrannosaurus if the young were feathered.

Feathered younglings are sensible due to philogenetic - but nothing is certain. Basically very close relatives did possess feathering of some sort, yet we know adult T.Rexed had not. Given the odditi, it's sensible they had them as younglings then shed in order to not overheat with all that mass. Plausible, possible, but not provable atm.

Honestly, it’s not the best Tyrannosaurus rex design because its teeth look like they’re made out of toothpicks. If you’re trying to put filaments on its body, they would have to be much smaller not like a porcupine like quills or whatever. Also, even though that it had lips, it’s teeth were still sticking out when it opens its mouth which I do appreciate however, until we find a mummy, we will know the truth of Tyrannosaurus rex had lips or feathers or not.

Filamentous integument isn't easy to decipher when observing the remains of an extinct animal--including dinosaurs. Those trace fossils hold less chance of preserving than bones or teeth. From our understanding, it's possible T. rex might've been decorated with quills similar to a porcupine's as much as it would sport a feathery crest or fleshy comb.

Of course there are imperfections throughout the documentary. One of the biggest are the presence of Pliosaurs on K-Pg Extinction event or the excess of current creatures showing in the eight episodes BUT what is the best reality to live? that they bring us productions about prehistoric life or that they bring us NOTHING?... That's why the BBC didn't produce a new Walking with Dinosaurs series again, due to excessive criticism.

Gabriel Ugueto might be skilled with a digital brush. But his _Tyrannosaurus rex_ is the most simple uninspiring thing to hit the film screen. The fact artists among the likes of David Krentz and John Conway can illustrate the monster with a more chilling subtly is more of what we should see in media than this "pseudo-Chad".

And while the artists you mention may strike you as more appealing (I myself admire their work), their mentality isn't to damn T. Rex to the one-dimensional understanding of apex predators always being scary as the bulk of the creative team is determined to be here.

Although they are decent for their craft, compared against veteran Paleoartists or their contemporaries--what about Ugneto's work strikes that much promise? Most of his work is generic and subtle which isn't unique and his color design choices are bland or boring save for the minute collection he's illustrated.

@mr.n7237 I like his work because it provides a good baseline for the current understanding of the animals. Yes, his color choices are not very vibrant, and as I said before, he leans more to the conservative side of current reconstruction. Which is a completely valid viewpoint, much more valid than the "logic" of something is only scary if it looks scary. I'm glad his work was chosen for Prehistoric Planet, because their goals align, showing the animals as they might have been. Gabriel's conservative nature does in no way diminish the imposing nature our current understanding of T. Rex suggests, which is something the creative team here did not have complete trust in. Mind you, I'm all for healthy artistic license in paleo art and even in documentaries, but when people start designing with the mindset "predators are ALWAYS scary" vs how might have this animal really looked like, it undermines the point they're trying to make. If it has to always look scary, then you're not going in appreciating that T. Rex was an apex predator no matter what it looked like. Gabriel is unplagued by such notions. I do wish he'd up his game I the colors, but I love his work for what it is, and I find he's awesome at what he does. For a point of clarity, I'm far more dissatisfied with the creative team than how the T. Rex appeared and behaved in the series. It's a decent, if flawed, reconstruction, and a good step away from the JP Rex that most have in their minds. Far from bad. But the mentality behind some of the creative choices does not belong in a work marketed as a documentary.

@@benrivera4631 And yet Engh, Witton, and Conway do not promote those highlights further in their work? These contemporary artists cast a broader--yet--complex understanding of the natural world and convey interpretations of dinosaurs as--not only intimidating monsters--but animals just surviving in more ways than one. Just from perspective, Conway's T.Rex shows more emotion and nobility than Ugueto's interpretation which sits between the threshold of "Scary" and "Majestic". Moreover, Gabriel Ugueto's artwork just understands the basis of Paleontology on its surface. He's too spoiled in creating 'Save-Faced" depiction of these animals rather than challenging his own preconceptions--especially if most of our information stems from today's fauna--surprise, most of the generic-looking megafauna actually have very bizarre features. Therefore, Paleontologists should never conserve a notion seemingly plausible (including in art.) So again--why aggrandize his artwork if its that's undercooked?

Since they reuploaded this video (don't know why tho, maybe it was better to keep it private) I can say that this sounds so contradictory. "New papers come out all the time so we had to take the best of that science and build up a picture" and then they couldn't even get the teeth right. Choosing some big quills instead of small filamentous feathers was a weird choice too. And of course they said more than one time they wanted to make it scary, a huge red flag when it comes to paleo docs. This was supposed to be a documentary, stop with this "it needs to be scary" bs. They didn't make it scary, they make it ugly. They wanted to give it a feeling of a top predator and they made it look like a slow ass animal that needs her sons to try and catch its preys (also this hunting method seems very unlikely considering all the current knowledge about T. rex). Yes, it's T. rex not T-Rex, to some it may sound like a nitpick but I don't really care, since this is a documentary at the very least write the abbreviation in the right way, it's not that difficult.

I agree with the bulking up, I've seen a lot in my childhood of supposed accurate rex being shrinkwrapped models like skin on skeleton with tiny foreheads. Like looking at modern mammal skulls they look very different to the real living ones. Its great that we know better to make them really big and heavy looking like modern animals, and its more likely than not that they had musculature and scales in place to straighten their eyesight and protect from trauma, mainly from other rexes.

In all honesty, I really animal enjoy designs that deviate from accuracy. I’d love to see it in a fantasy game or show involving dinosaurs. But this is a documentary, and accuracy should’ve been their main focus for this one. If they wanted their T. Rex design to receive well, they’d should’ve looked to Prehistoric Planet tyannosaur designs for reference (not that is should be an EXACT copy, of course).

I like the Trex of prehistoric planet they blend in there surrounding. and not so much wrinkle in there faces, because i think Trex is not aquatic creature like crocodile there skin hydrated by water not a trex. Trex is terrestrial animal, think example of iguana and marine iguana see the deference there.

Inaccuracies tyrannosaurus did not have one giant lump on its head as you see in prehistoric planet,. It has two crest they were for pretty much ramming into other things the teeth like knives well in reality, they were more like bananas.

Not necessarily because it looks like a rock with a tail, teeth, and legs, but because they deliberately went for a more sensational appearance instead of being true to the science, which is what's expected of an educational documentary. If this were a bombastic movie released in cinema's, then it's whatever, but it's treatment here is inappropriate. This stuff matters a lot to palaeontologists and fans of the science, and it's really a disservice to these people who pour their hearts and money into this. LooP's rex has way too many teeth that are all the same size and pronated wrists, mistakes that shouldn't be apparent in a documentary. @jacobcox4565 The T.rex in both PP and LOP are artistic interpretations. Every single piece of paleomedia that you see originally started with a drawing. You are never going to get a 100% accurate depiction of most prehistoric lifeforms. As for LOP's T.rex having too many teeth, which are too similarly sized, I honestly didn't even notice. I'll have to go back and take another look. There's also only one scene where the T.rex appears to possess semi-pronated wrists. The latter was blown out of proportion imo. Do I think that LOP's T.rex is as good as Prehistoric Planet's? No. Do I think it's still a fairly solid depiction, despite some flaws? Yes. Life on Our Planet was made on a much, much smaller budget than Prehistoric Planet and did not have nearly as long a production and preproduction. Netflix wanted to capitalise on the success of Prehistoric Planet as quickly as possible. As a result, time and budget constraints meant that the team behind the documentary would never be able to deliver the level of quality shown by its "competitor." That said, the team did do a pretty good job with all of those things taken into consideration.

@@maxmcqueen1196 Artistic interpretation is all well and good, I'm all for it, but this is a documentary. They're depicting a real animal. An animal that was once alive, but they're giving it features that are objectively incorrect. We know what Tyrannosaurus teeth are supposed to look like, we know that T. rex didn't have pronated wrists. There's a lot of ways to make an accurate T. rex design your own without just tracing a picture of the PP rex, like different colors/patterns or dangly, fleshy bits. It's not about budget, because lack of budget doesn't automatically mean inaccurate designs. It would've taken so little effort to just listen to scientific consultants instead of going with what looked scary. You can never get 100% accuracy, but that doesn't mean you can depict them however you want in a documentary meant for education, at least make them look like how Paleontologists believe they looked like.

Tyrannosaurus rex is a lot of things: Massive, Menacing, A force of nature--being a monster is one of its perks. For Paleontologists to deny that truth is what undermines the status quo and respect for this creature and the field of Paleontology. Fletcher is so far in his "suspension of disbelief" that he's creating a double-standard for himself...and that's pathetic.

The only way PP's depiction is "too sanitized" is that it doesn't show dinosaurs dying out at the end for once, which was a breath of fresh air tbh

lmao no it doesn't, research anything about the trex and you will see how absolutely trash the LOOP model is. T rex couldn't have ran with 2 legs in the air at the same time in a running gait, it's not even confirmed if it had feathers and even if it did they would be more like fluffy fibers than quills, and their teeth were much less numerous but much larger instead of being a huge mass of smaller messy teeth
