On paper, the offer was good: two well-known property developers offered the elderly the opportunity to purchase a unit in one of the high-class estates. The pensioners would own the life rights to live in the unit until they pass away or move out. Once that happens, the developer would sell the unit on their behalf and each pensioner would receive their money. But three years ago, something went wrong, leaving bereaved family members to deal with the double blow of losing a loved one and not being able to wind up their estates or receive the money owed to them. Now, Carte Blanche returns to investigate the property developers accused of reneging on their promises to the elderly and their beneficiaries.

I always had the idea of moving into a retirement village, but after Covid I changed my mind because of what I saw friends having to deal with. Plus the problems these friends speak of. This episode of Carte Blanche has been very helpful.

Note that the three year limit in South Africa only starts from the date that the debtor last acknowledged the debt. In other words if they promise to pay you the countdown starts from that date. If you contact them a year later and they once again promise to pay you, then the clock resets and the three years starts again. If they make a payment of any amount that also restarts the clock. If it goes to court it really doesn't matter how long they drag it out, because the clock will never start as long as legal action is in progress. What they're actually doing here is earning a huge amount of money in interest while they hold someone's money. So they're using your money to help fund any legal defence and they know that it is very expensive for anyone to go after them. This is really a worldwide problem. The wealthy and businesses are the only ones who have real access to the courts and they use their economic power to fleece everyone else.
