As a little girl I remember a young Kenny and his grandma Mrs. Wheeler living on S. Lily St in Fresno CA. My grandma lived across the street from them. I can still recall him practicing his karate moves on the front lawn lol. It's amazing how far he went with his talent & passions.

I lost my right leg below the knee and had my left leg mangled in a bike accident 17 years ago when I was 45. I can empathise with Flex, I also know that like him I dont let my injuries define me as a person too. Respect to the guy!

@@woooooooo9061 No I didn't, as I said my leg was lost due to it being run over during a bike accident. At the time I was told that many amputees can sink into lifelong bouts of depression with such things, but that is counter productive. You have to just get on with it and be the best you can possibly be despite the disability. I have maximum respect for anyone that can battle against such adversity and keep a positive outlook, not just this guy.

Word. I’m extremely psychologically strong in other circumstances, but must admit that paraplegia or amputation would probs have me beat because I rely on my physicality. I couldn’t imagine being the physical specimen that Flex once was and then losing a leg (not to mention his wealth). Tragic.

I remember meeting Flex, who was guest posing at a competition in Victoria , BC - circa 1992. I actually won a bet with my friends, guessing he was 240lbs at the time. He was in stellar condition and when I eventually asked, told us he was 242. Flex was notably cheerful, talkative and very humble while signing autographs in his overalls that day (yep, definitely the early 90's). I still have the photo I took of him at the table. Seemed like a great guy and remains a pillar of inspiration. The definition of "never give up".

Fascinating video! I had no idea he'd had a kidney transplant and leg amputation. Looking at his physique in 98 and 99 when he placed 2nd to Ronnie Coleman, he looked amazing and I have no idea how bodybuilding is judged but Flex's abs and quads looked way better that Coleman's in my opinion. Really inspirational guy.

I've kinda been a casual fan of bodybuilding since back in the early 80's and I know who Flex is but didn't know anything about so many crazy, giant, life threatening obstacles that he has conquered for his entire life!!! Literally, what he has gone through and triumphed over and over again is one of the most impressive in all of humanity!!! That would kill most humans 10 times over, just to live through all that is a giant accomplishment but he came back like he was born all over again!! I could go on and on about the respect I have for him but don't have the time and none of this is over rated, it's literally that badass! WOW!!!

Ronnie paid the price of being a mass monster of the 90’s and early 2000’s. His body is beyond broken. Flex just took a little extra off at the knees. But agreed the judging back then was narrow minded as hell.

Flex definitely beat Ronnie Coleman in 1999 (and maybe even in 1998) imo but got ripped off. That Sandow should have been his. Dorian’s physique was untouchable in 1993. Those famous black and white photographs of Yates a few weeks out from the ‘93 Olympia are legendary.

Geez, going through depression is bad enough especially with suicidal thoughts. Then a near fatal car crash. Tjen a horrible kidney disease, tjen part of his leg amputated. As a young teen of about 13 yrs old I bought a Muscles & Fitness magazine one day, as I read it that night in bed I found out about Flex for the first time, he inspired me so much that I literally begged my parents for a month until they let me sign up at the gym not far from our house, I'll always be fond of those memories and grateful that God gave us FLEX!!!

I’ve always been of the view that Flex (and Kevin Levrone) deserved a Sandow trophy. Maybe 1998 also, but Flex definitely beat Ronnie in the 1999 Mr. O imo.

@@miko1975guitar I love The King but his gyno shouldn’t have been rewarded in ‘98 and Flex was superior in ‘99 imo. He had packed on even more quality muscle than the year prior and looked phenomenal.

@@Jibbie49 That was my first thought too. It's a very strange sport when the winner is the one who _looks_ the best. We admire their physiques and the effort they put in, but I mean... could there be a more superficial contest? And you *cannot* compete without taking significant quantities of exogenous hormones so you are literally sacrificing (or certainly gambling with) your long-term health just to look great!

I hate that many weightlifters end up with such heavy physical problems yet I think most are doing well. Im glad Flex didnt let this bring him down and he is still going STRONG.
