A million undocumented migrants in the UK don't even exist in the eyes of the law. But they do exist: and they live in constant fear of being caught and deported.
They carry their whole lives on their backs, constantly change their routine, their address and their phone - there is no sense of comfort or stability.
We've been finding out what their life is like - through the eyes of a 37-year-old Zimbabwean man who we'll call Shang. He's lived here - undocumented - for the last seventeen years. Jamal Osman reports.

My country was at war. So I ran away rather than fight. Yes I am a coward. I live in a country that gives me everything for nothing. A country which in the last war had men fighting for it to be free and where women did men's jobs and went through horrendous bombings and lack of food. I left family behind because I was too cowardly to protect them. There are many like me. Many young single men who just come here for an easy life. Time ID cards were introduced. Zimbabwe formally Rhodesia had a booming economy and was once a very rich nation with luscious farms all producing crops which were then sold the world over. Then a man called Mugabe became the Tyranical President and ordered all the white farmers off the farms that they had owned for generations. If these families didn't walk away leaving everything they were killed in barbaric ways the UK took these people in to stop the carnage. So the UK will help people in genuine need but there are ways of seeking asylum in situations like this. Jumping on a boat from Libya and getting across the Med into Europe then walking or being driven through Europe to France where these criminals get into more boats or lorries to cross the Channel to get to the UK is not a legal method. If this guy we t through the proper channels then he would probably be here legally but because he's gone through criminal means to be here then he is a criminal and needs to be treated as such and either deported or imprisoned then deported

Why just leave people alone in limbo. Why not give some status so they can work or receive benefits and contribute to society in a meaningful way. After training etc and integration, he may feel confident enough to go home and see his family.
