I have a chaotic little fluffball named oreo (or for short) and for the first year of her life she was caged. After seeing some of your videos I decided to bunny proof my room. I can't let her have the whole house as she hates my sister for unknown reasons and bosses around the cats, but now every day when I come home from school I get circled by a tiny buzzing bunny. She sleeps on my bed while I do homework and occasionally I bring her to Canadian tire (she likes that store, and it's pet friendly so why not) and once in a while she'll even go to the park with me and observe everything. She seems oddly relaxed compared to other rabbits, likes car rides, and demands at least one plain cheerio weekly. Now, I still can't believe I ever stuck her in a tiny cage with a bottle and only a small bowl of hay.

Also, just to add this, she bosses around the dog, too. A standard poodle literally fears her. The rabbit's a very fat little dwarf lionhead. Four pounds. She has gained the respect of the cats and befriended one ( the cat lacks hunting instincts in general, and has taken to grooming the bunny when she sees her) and the other cat, literally massive and a great centipede hunter, runs away from oreo.

Please remember your bun is a prey animal and u may think all is good but its not when u add cats and dogs, outside strange environments and humans she clearly doesn't get on with. They're very sensitive animals so please don't subject her to things she's doesn't have to be subjected too! Sorry to be blunt but it's fact!!!

The comments on hay made me laugh so much. Yes it is everywhere, no matter how much you sweep, vacuum and dust,it finds its way into every nook and cranny, shoe , fridge, draw, bed, you name it, you will find it contains some hay😂 . While you are not paying attention distracted or sleeping, the bunnies are on secret bunny missions hiding hay around your home. Gotta love them❤️🐰🐇

I only had one bunny out of the four I've had who LOVED cuddling. He would cuddle up next to me and ask for pets for a really long time. But he was the exception, the three others couldn't care less and they only come for pets when they feel like it :') Probably he needed so much care from me because he was alone, and I didn't know much about bunnies at that time. He lived in a cage first, and I think I discovered with your channel that he could be free roamed. No cage at all after that, he was free in the appartment, and didn't do damage so my mom let him do his thing. He lived 10 and a half years, he was so sweet. They are incredible animals with strong personnalities, all four of mine are so different.

Excellent video! Glad you're highlighting some of these myths. As a married adult (no kids) with 2 spoiled and free roam buns, I'm constantly having to explain... Because they immediately question why I have them in the first place, they think they're for kids like a hamster, they're in cages, they must poop everywhere, smell bad, etc. Reality: they are a perfect combination of a "cat-dog"... All the best/ worst attributes of each, and unique personalities too. It's a lot of work (and the hay sucks, you're right)... but totally worth it! ✨💖😊❤

As a fully free roaming house rabbit mommy for over 20 years, I can say bunnies are super intelligent and can be trained what is appropriate (chew toys, boxes etc) and not appropriate (electrical cords, furniture, walls, shoes etc) to chew on. That being said, you still must bunny proof your home because training takes time and patience (a week - three months depending on the bun). If you take something away, tell them no or redirect them, you must provide them an alternative item to chew on. Praise them when they chew the toy. Bunnies MUST chew on something. New items in your home are fair game so you must always be ready to direct them to their toys again. Make sure there are lots of textures and options because they all have their own preferences (card board, wood, wicker etc). In my experience all of my rabbits became super easy going at 4 years old, with the exception of my American Sable who is 8 and still very very active.

Definitely important to know about that low maintenance part my experience is i find myself buying 80 oz of hay, over 3 cases of water to ensure fresh water, 3 bags of pellets, Multiple bags of spring mix and an array of fruits (except high citrus/sugar content). I'm advocating for half free roaming. That's just for my peace. When I'm at work, I'm way more sure that my bunny isn't gonna hurt itself iff the bunny is in the cage. But when I'm home and can keep an eye on the bunny, it can go wherever it wants. I admire those people that do full time free roam cause I know I can't do it with my anxiety.

Another excellent video and so critical for non-bunny people. We have tried to talk to people wanting to get a first bunny, but they so often tune us out, only to ask where they can give up their bunny a short time later. Sadly, people do not have the real conception of being bunny parents. The first thing we say is that God made bunnies to be bunnies so don't expect a dog or a cat or anything thing else. If they destroy something in your house, blame yourself for not bunny proofing better - NOT the bunny. That is their behavior! (says one who has been through a sofa, two chairs, tables, baseboards, untold cords, slippers and shoes, clothes, etc.). Always appreciate everything you have done and do to make people understand being a bunny owner and for giving bunnies a better chance for a truly happy life. I will also say that once you love a bunny you will always love bunnies!!! They are smart, sweet, loving and social little creatures who just want to be a part of the family... and ours are!!!

I disagree with lower maintenance at "senior" stage, because some buns might start needing arthritic support when the reach that stage and more health related issues start becoming more prevalent at that senior stage. Requiring more vet visits/bills and therefor requiring more maintenance.

I started out wirh a cage and small xpen for my bunnies before moved them outside. We got a cargo container and made it nice and secure and put lights, a sink,AC, better flooring, ect. I had to move them out of my house because i felt bad they didnt have enough space and because they werent doing good with my dogs. We live on 5 acres and it was the best thing for them. They are so much happier now having space to run around and be bunnies and are so much more bonded to me and get super happy everytime i visit them. ( I see them at least 10 times a day)

Thank you for giving this vital information. Helps people to know what they are getting into. You said when they are 5 years old, it's less work. Just thought I'd mention that when a bun gets even older than that, they get health issues like all of us. Then the amount of work increases with daily medication, butt cleaning, etc. But worth every second, considering all the years of love they have given us.

There is one I've heard about the fact of grooming rabbits and I had a nosey mean nabor complain to management about seeing my bunny free in my apartment through the sliding glass door, I told them the truth, she's not destructive she's litterbox trained and a cage is no place for a bun and they don't mind as long as she's not destroying the unit. She's gonna be 6 this coming February. I feel bad that the one thing I haven't done yet was get her fixed but I was told by vet that she's not a good candidate for surgery after seeing her blood work, but I'll love her for as long as I have her.

My bunny (Pookie) has no idea what a cage is, and I'm proud he has no clue. Second, he doesn't like carrots and refuses to eat them. I'm one of those lucky ownders, Pookie is incredibly cuddly and loves pets (I can pet him for hours), as long as he's on the ground. He only poops and pees in his potty house; that said, when he exits his potty house, his poop can go flying lol. Obviously his poop and pee does smell but he's an animal, what do people expect? It's not like our poop and pee smells like flowers. As for being high-maintenance, I probably do more for Pookie than is necessary since he is my first pet where I (middle-aged female) am the primary care giver; but I insist on the freshest greens as well as changing his water-bowl twice a day and spending tons of time with him. My parents say he's spoiled and they're probably right however I always reply, "better to have a spoiled bunny than a neglected one". The hay was a surprise for me too, but he is an animal that requires hay so I don't judge him for what he needs; he's my beautiful baby boy. If cleaning up after him is the price I have to pay to have my snuggly time with him; I'd pay a thousand times over.

My biggest one will always be bonding/getting a second bunny. You don’t think they need or want a friend if you aren’t with them often and then you have to bond which takes weeks-months. And you might need to pay for a rescue or an outside person to do it if you don’t have neutral territory.

Although, since rabbits are generally marked in the small pets section, people believe that they do not cost much or don’t need vet checkups… which is completely untrue. I agree with this on so many levels. I recently adopted a bunny a week ago however I did have some knowledge so not all of this was news to me. I knew I wouldn’t have a rabbit in a cage we got a dog pen and he is only in there when we are sleeping or not home which isn’t often since I am a sahm. So I knew he was a rabbit that was going to be a pet running around. For now he’s in the main parts of the home just not the bedrooms. I got him for my 3 1/2 year old to have a pet but luckily I never expected her to do any care for the rabbit I do all of that and that the bunny would end up being more my pet since I really wanted a pet too. Working on the not hugging thing. I had no idea how messy hay would be and how annoying it was to clean but it’s not a super big deal for me since it’s not dirty. I was aware of their dietary needs. I was aware bunnies are affectionate but don’t typically like to be held or cuddle much which I’m ok with because he loves pets and is super sweet. I knew his life expectancy so I’m cool with that. Don’t think you mentioned in this video but I didn’t realize about how they mask their pain and it’s hard to know when they need to go to the vet and that they can get GI stasis which scare me I really hope if something ever happens to my bun I will notice in time to get him help.

The idea they love cuddles man...My boy pretyt much hates cuddles. I have had him for about 5-6 years now and he rarely still enjoys cuddles. When I first got him, he was super aggressive. Cuddles weren't even an idea for him. Get near him and he would grunt at you, punch you and bite you...etc...It took nearly 2 years for him to finally calm down, from there it took a few months slowly building up to the point he would sleep with me at night on the bed. (I got him when he was 3 years old and already neutered. The aggressiveness was due to the changing of homes and owners) I will say the biggest thing that was a factor to this change, was letting him have 100% 24/7 free roam. He already had lots of roam time, but he was typically in an expen at night and when I was at school. Once I gave up trying to stop him from getting out, and just let him run around as he pleased. He became so so so SO much more happy and relaxed. Free Roaming can help so much more than just exercise, it helps with their way of thinking and emotions as well. Like mentioned, it can take lots of trust though, so its important to spend time and get to know your bunny.

There is no real disadvantage in having a bunny, the only draw back is you need to look after it, eg get it's jabs, feed it, food hay and sawdust costs. But this hails into insignificance the benefits if having a bunny. They aren't just a pet, their your new best friend too. My first bunny was certainly my best friend. Her fur was so fluffy and soft and she was so cute. My second bunny was a rex and her fur was all metallic and her eyes were like gem stones, all beautiful and pretty! Having a bunny is a blessing, all the so call "cons" are nothing! You get a pet because you want a companion! My rabbit used to sleep in my bed with me and snuggle up to me!

For all the homesteaders out there: rabbit meat is unhealthy and not cost effective. Same if you see it on a menu. Rabbitries are houses of horror and disease. We need to reclassify rabbits from livestock to pet animals.

I don't think we should eat rabbits either but you are simply wrong about it being unhealthy. It's actually very lean & one of the healthiest meats you can eat. USDA states it as one of the most nutritious meats out there. HOWEVER the cost to correctly raise and care for them may be more than what it be worth to raise and eat them. But most that eat them stuff 10 in a small cage and feed them just pellets

He's started the litter box training now but hopefully that betters as he gets neutered u inspire me to fully roam him as he's so calm and collected each time he's our when I'm home he never goes to chew on my personal belongings and such. You can hear her destroying plastic cable protectors at 2am or zooming about with gusto. I agree with everything! Especially the hay! I have two Angora brothers, Twix and Oreo who have their own bedroom in my house. They don’t like to explore the house due to the wood floors but where I’ve placed rugs, they will explore some days lol ❤ I recently developed an allergy to Timothy hay but I just wear gloves and a mask when I refill my boys hay bin! The only other thing I would add (sorry if it’s been said already) is that the myth is all bunnies are the same but in reality, they each have their own personality! I love telling people about how Twix is so cuddly and loves when I come home and can spend time with him. Oreo is picky. Some days he wants pets and other days he pushes my hand away and hops away. 😅 I forgive him because we all have bad days ☺️ Great video though! We love watching your videos. ❤

My bunny will chew anything and everything . I have an Xpen for her , and yes at night she sleeps in her cage . She destroyed an antique table that belonged to my grandmother . I caught her as a feral , two years ago . But I’ll never dump her. She isn’t that cuddly , even after two years of having her . I would have mentioned as well “The Shed “. She’s a Havana , so it’s not like an angora . But it takes just over a month to replace the summer fur for winter fur . I’ve noticed during this time, she’s quite embarrassed about it . She eats a bit less too . Have you noticed this as well . She sheds in September . For the 2 years I’ve had her , the exact same behaviour . My bunny doesn’t shed in the spring like some others do . Another enjoyable video . Thank you ❤❤❤

For purposes of being allowed to keep our rabbits in our apartment, we told management they were "cage animals" lol. I always wondered how we were going to explain it if they ever stopped by and the rabbits were all running around :P. But luckily, the only people who ever stopped by while we were living in the apartment were maintenance people. They always gave advanced notice, so we would put the bunnies in an ex-pen (they would already be sleeping during those hours anyways, so they didn't really mind), and they never commented on them. I honestly don't think we could've kept our bunnies in cages, though. I'm not just saying that because we wouldn't want to, either lol. The first couple of nights that we had our one male rabbit, he was put in a large cage (plenty of room; he was only a 3 lb. baby in a cage that was the length of the room, 4 ft. wide, and 3 ft tall) when we went to sleep. This was because we hadn't trained him yet and didn't want him destroying anything or getting into something that might hurt him. On the first night, the rabbit simply opened the sliding door and hopped out lol. We found him the next morning. There was no lock on the cage at the time. My husband found a bit of yarn and tied it shut the next night. He simply bit through the yarn and hopped out again. So the third night, we used a metal clip. He spent the entire night rattling the cage to get out :(. It was breaking my heart to leave him in there, so we trained him as quickly as we could, covered all the cords in his room, and soon just left the cage door open so he could go in and out as he pleased. Oddly enough, once the door was open, he actually did spend most of his sleep time inside of it. So I guess he just didn't want to be locked in! Other mishaps have happened with our other rabbits too, even with large ex-pens. One of our males learned how to jump 3.5 feet over the edge of the ex-pen when he was still a baby (even when nothing was left inside for him to climb on). I kept walking into the bedroom and finding him just sleeping on our bed lol. So, yeah. Rabbits do not do well in cages. I think they are similar to cats, in that while they may enjoy lounging about and spending most of the day in one area, they cannot handle being locked out of other areas, should they choose to go run around or explore. Today, our two males unfortunately still cannot mix, but each of them has several rooms of the house to themselves and we just keep baby gates as dividers. Despite the fact that I know they could jump over the baby gates if they wanted to, they never have in over two years. For whatever reason, they seem to have respected this territorial divider that we put up and are perfectly content with the areas we've given to each of them.

I point out in those cartoons, Bugs was treating the carrot like a cigar. Now how healthy are cigars? My mother's neighbor tried out a baby giant bunny. It was as big as her cats and only a few months old!!! She had to send it back to its previous home. But holy cheese toast it was BIG I kept thinking it was an adult!!!! There are also a few places in my neighborhood where I view it as being clean enough that I can harvest fresh grass during the growing season to feed Rukia. Now as far as enclosures go, I'm a messy human and I have a cat. So Rukia gets a puppy pen that's all hers in my plant room so that she doesn't get into trouble. My cat likes to take naps next to Rukia's pen. But he doesn't go IN because he doesn't want to get bit. Yes, you heard me, I repeat this in the comments of Lorelai's videos all the time but my bunny BIT my cat! REPEATEDLY. To explain, my cat is a weirdo. He doesn't like his own kind. He drools when he purrs sometimes. He humps his toys. He's extremely sensitive to people's moods. And not only can he smell when a pot is about to go dry, he knows to remind me to feed him and EVEN to feed the bunny! Yes you heard me! He looks out for Rukia to make sure that this forgetful human keeps the bunny litter box full of hay and the water bowl topped up!!!! But most relevant to this story, he becomes very anxious if he thinks another animal is going to take away his food. I used to store a sealed 5 gallon bucket with his kibble in it in the plant room. When I got Rukia, I forgot to take that bucket out and she was free roaming in that room. So Bandit got incredibly anxious about his food bucket and she got mad at him for getting into her territory (and when I first got her she spent HOURS chinning whatever wood surface she could find so you know she REALLY wanted that room to herself!) When her territory was contracted to a pen with a clear barrier marking his and hers, they both calmed down. I also had to move that bucket out of that room permanently. The lesson is know your animals, know their needs, know their personalities, know yourself and set limits. Don't just set your animal up for success, set yourself up for a successful relationship with your animal. You have advanced planning capability, they don't. Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist, encourages cat owners to be a detective. That is to say to know their animal's behavior patterns and personalities, observe their behavior and their area, and make logical deductions based on what you know about that individual animal and your observations. I see no reason this philosophy shouldn't apply to bunnies and bunny owners. You have two eyes and one mouth, helloooooo.

I disagree with the “throw out the cage.” Don’t just toss it. It makes a great transition from cage life to litter box because the cage without the top can be their first litter box. The cage is horrible to us, but to that bunny, it is still their first home. As for hay, I tell people it’s rabbit glitter because like glitter you will find it everywhere. 😊 One expectation I wish you included was not all bunnies bond to you. Bunnies like your Lennon and my Ozzy are unicorn bunnies. Your bunny will show you love, but sadly the ones like we’ve been blessed with are the exception not the rule.
