Your story is so similar to mine, I had my first ankle fusion at 15 in 2010 but Berber healed correctly so had to go in for two more fusions of my right ankle. The pain I felt every day walking on the fused ankle was awful and I developed a chronic nerve pain disorder from the first surgery cutting a nerve. I was on so much pain medication just so I could walk, that’s when I decided at 24 to have a right below the knee amputation. I had mine done June 28,2018 it was the best decision I made. I am completely off pain medication and am doing very well. Thank you for sharing your story!!

Why did they fuse your ankle in the first place
@DougGann15 күн бұрын
Thank you for recording this. I'm on my third year of a fused ankle and can provide one positive update for people considering the treatment. Two hours before my surgery, my anesthesiologist did the usual pre-op procedures and then sat down and told me, "This is going to really hurt. There is no way around it." Then he handed me a simplified business card with a phone number and told me it was his private phone and to contact him by text if anything got overwhelming. But before the overwhelming sense of dread could kick in, he told me we were going to use a new pain management device, which was a bladder-ball connected to a catheter inserted into my thigh that would provide a slow drip of novocaine directly to the femoral nerve. The bladder was a bit bigger than a softball, which I could wear in something that looked like a purse. It was made of a new type of meta-material that would shrink on exposure to oxygen, and this shrinking is what pumped the novocaine directly onto the nerve. Upon waking from the surgery, the pain level was about the same as the recovery from the previous year of multiple surgeries you described so well, but it was just a normal level of pain. Over the next three days, as the bladder shrank down to the size of a tennis ball, the pain level was much less than any of the surgeries I had had before. I used Codine on the day of the surgery, but I did not need it again. It seems to me that this technology will go a long way to reducing new cases of opioid addiction. And thanks for explaining the "little joints" issue. Now I know what I'm experiencing when I get painful "flare-ups" in parts of my foot that are nowhere near the titanium rods drilled through my tibia and calcaneus. And yeah, the scars are still enormous.

My dad went about 20 years with a fused ankle, until he blew out his hip on that side from favoring that leg. The hip replacement ultimately led to his death. I think you made the right decision to have it amputated. Modern prosthetics could save you a lot of headaches in the future. And prosthetics will only improve over time.

Damn I had my ankle fused from a skateboarding accident in 2016...I actually had a Pilon fracture, my tibula and fibula broke and my ankle joint shattered into like 7 pieces. Unfortunately I also had a lot of extreme complications (when they set my tib/fib it didn't hold and the bones shifted almost burst through my skin, the doctors call it tenting) I had to go to Stanford for over 40 days Initially they tried to give me a skin graft of shark skin but the skin graft didn't stick and the hardware and my bone became infected. Stanford managed to give me a skin flap which is the next level above a skin graft(skin flaps have muscle tissue and blood in addition to skin) if it hadn't been for the bone infection I wouldn't have lost my right leg. long story longer I just had a bka of my right leg in September. The doctors wanted to amputate for a couple of years and I kept putting it off and it got to the point where i would have ended up going septic and probably dying if I didn't go through with the amputation. I apologize for rambling and I didn't say all that to spook you or anything. There's no way you would be in my situation...even if the fused ankle goes bad they can do ankle reconstructive surgery, you don't have to worry about amputation. They couldn't do the ankle reconstructive surgery for me because the skin flap I had wasn't something that allows them to cut into do surgeries and then I had a bunch hardware it was just a nightmare and what I went through won't be your experience. That being said it's still a lot to deal with...when you said your ankle hurts so bad when you lay down it made my heart wrench for you brother. I swear having the fused ankle caused me some of the most agonizing pain. It literally changed my personality and I became far less of a positive person. God bless you bro, I know you have a lot on your plate but I know you're a strong individual based off the fact you've lived with a fused ankle as long as you have

There are new options now for ankle pain, for fusions. Amputation is the last resort and most doctors will refuse to do it on someone so young, and insurance won't pay for it.

Hi Jo I have been following you now for a good while. Sadly I too suffer the total ankle fusion including having joints disconnected so that I have zero movement whatsoever. Our stories are eerily similar. Your description of living with a fused ankle is absolutely spot on. Yes, I have thought about amputation however, I am not brave enough to face it. You articulate so well the difficulties. Yep, life & pain is a bugger.

Hello! I’m currently going through a similar situation. I just had my tenth ankle surgery two days ago. They fused my subtalar joint. Before this, my tib, fib, and talus were fused. It started with a softball injury and the original doctor got an infection in my ankle and it ate away at my cartilage. I was left with bone on bone arthritis. My new doctor tried several different surgeries to avoid a fusion but my body kept rejecting everything including all of the hardware. I have been watching a lot of your videos and find them very inspiring and genuine. Thank you for your honesty and strength through all of this. I truly appreciate it.

First. You are a very strong person. I know because I am in a situation not exactly the same as you, but with similarities. Brief history-I was a runner building my endurance to run a full marathon, I did 5ks ran every third day, made my way to eight miles, then I ran a 9 mile race. Seven miles were good, somewhere in mile 8 I couldn't run anymore and slow limped the finish line. After a misdiagnosis, and physical therapy that I am 100% certain completed the damage to my tendon, I was told in order to stop the pain and run again I would need surgery. I wanted to run again and be out of constant pain. The Surgery involved- the removal of my torn post. tibial tendon, (replaced that with a flexor tendon) and removed an accessory navicular bone. Six week without any weight on my ankle. (Of course I developed blood clots in my leg). With that said, It is today Four years and 8 months since the injury, four years and one month since the surgery. I cannot run, I can barley walk and am always in pain. I walk (limp) with a cane, and need to wear an Arizona Style brace in order to "walk". I have been told the next step would be the triple fusion surgery to alleviate the pain. I have refused that surgery for two years now, and after seeing your video I know I am making the correct decision (At this point) That may change down the road, but for now I'll struggle with the pain. Thank you for sharing your stories.

6:56 Dear Jo, thank you for this video. I fell 11/27/22 and had three ankle surgeries with the final being a complete fusion and already know an eventual amputation. There is a part of me that wishes they would go ahead and amputate it. I have also had a spinal fusion and I thought that was painful but it doesn’t hold a candle to my ankle fusion pain. It has greatly affected my mental health. I have never had social media and your channel is my first grasp that perhaps an online community could help with the depression that rides the back of chronic pain. I am still in the phase of learning to walk on it correctly but I stand 5’10” and am addressing a weight issue as well. These two issues have caused the chronic pain to be much worse and though I am aware that I only have myself to blame, it certainly doesn’t make surmounting them any easier. But your video and positivity give me strength to draw on and I am grateful and humbled by your story.

Hi Jo. I was in a car accident almost a year ago. I shattered my heel bone. I learned not to break when you're about to hit something, but I digress. Dr said it's the worst shatter she has ever seen, not words you really want to hear from a doctor. I have had three surgeries, two sets of hardware and a bad infection. Now I am left with no hardware (it had gotten infected) and no heel bone and a lot of pain! The only thing my doctor here is offering me is an amputation and has cut me off of all pain meds, so I feel like I'm being forced into this life-altering decision. I live in a very rural area and options are very limited. That's just a little bit of how I ended up watching your videos. I have watched you for many months now and wanted to thank you for your willingness to be so transparent. You have given me, and I'm sure many others, hope that there is life after amputation. I can so relate it. I had my right tubtalar joints fused after botched a botched spinal fusion at age 10 fusion to stabilize my foot. 16 years later my ankle joint was busted and it was way before the days of ankle joint replacements. So I opted for an ankle fusion. Septic non-union of ankle, followed by clearance of sepsis. Another non union and finaly union but still pain due to ongoing infection which only revealed itself after several shouting matches with surgeon who said there shouldn't be pain. Sepsis cleared once again and every thing was fine. Then I had to go through the same motions by having the subtalar joints of the left foot fused due arthritis. When I went to have the dislodged hardware removed from the left foot the surgeon made an incision on right! Foot and then proceeded to the left foot and while busy on it, he discovered that the joints were not fused and so he repeated the procedure. 6 weeks later sepsis became evident again! On right foot which was cleared but foot/ankle still painful. Left foot is also still painful because I am probably straining the ankle joint. During the period when both feet were supposedly healing, I used a wheelchair and one day the wheelchair flipped backward, resulting in compression fractures of my spine. Spines become rather osteoporotic after a fusion due to the hardware they leave in there. So they removed the hardware from my spine and revised the fusion for the 2nd time. Now I have pain in my back due to degeneration at the top and bottom ends of the fusion and the sacro-ileac joint plus 2 feet/ankles.

thank you for sharing your story, I am getting ready to have a revision of my subtalar joint, this will make my 10th surgery on my ankle. At this point, my entire ankle will be fused, due to the fact they will be fusing the pantalar joint. The pain is mostly out of control. This has been going on for 15 years. I believe amputation is my best option. Due to insurance the doctor says we have to try this first. I am so happy for you that you have been able to have a more normal life. I am so excited to get mine back!

I understand the 'I did it because I wanted to live, not because it didn't hurt' thing. I had my foot fused (subtalar joint, navicular joint and cubiod joint so fused together) in November of 2015 at age 20, why, is a bit of a mess but despite the fusion I still wanted to dance and still do (tap, jazz, hiphop, contemporary) and it does hurt and there are some things I can't do like everyone else, (which I'm still trying to convince myself is okay) but I do it because I love it and while I'm destroying my ankle joint and what remains of the tiny joints in my left foot I would so much rather take everything I can from it and do what I want now at 24 then get to 40 and have regrets, at the end of the day I know I'm looking at years of more severe pain ahead but for now I want to do everything.

Hi, thanks for sharing your story. I do not have a fused ankle, but I have a few ligaments torn in my right ankle. It used to hurt to walk, let alone run even after the swelling went down. My ankle was also extremely stiff in the morning, so I can relate with you not being able to properly angle your toes when putting skinny jeans. I went to a very good surgeon and the deal was this: my angle ligaments are a mush, due to multiple Handball injuries and other sports over the years. If I want to become an anthlete, I need surgery, may be even in multiple stages, and the surgeon cannot guarantee good results… but I was finishing dental school at that time, and becoming an athlete was not my goal, I just wanted to be able to walk without pain. I went to a physiotherapist that managed to massage my ankle out so it was loose, and showed me excercises to teach my muscles to take over the job of the ligaments. Is the pain better? Yes! I can do long hikes again and go to the gym. Can I do impact sports or gym exercises? No! I’ll be inviting trouble. Is my ankle actually ok? No - the lateral ligaments in my ankle are gone so it is not stable and never will be again. I loose balance occasionally if the floor is uneven and trip very easily. I tripped yesterday actually due to an uneven floor 😂😅 but I made peace with that. My ankle no longer hurts. Your body can only take so much stress during your life. Unfortunately, medicine is not about fixing you up 100% so you can do whatever you did before your accident. Medicine is about raising your quality of life after the accident/disease. It’s a sad truth, but patients need to adjust their expectations. Aim for better health post accident/disease, do not aim for what it used to be prior to that.

I understand. I had a subtalar fusion 7 years ago due to a horrible car accident and although the surgery was a success in terms of allowing me to walk without a noticeable limp, the pain I deal with now 7 years laters can be intolerable at times. As you said impact sports or exercises are out of the equation. Running is painful and walking on uneven terrain is treacherous. Nevertheless, I still maintain a healthy lifestyle and workout everyday although working out my legs can be a challenge due to my limited range of motion in the ankle. Physiotherapy is also a huge help. Take care of yourself and keep those spirits high.

Sounds similar to when my dad had to have his wrist fused. He had alot of pain and told me he wished they would just amputate the hand. The hospital would not do it. The whole reason he ended up having the wrist fused to begin with was that his hand got severed in a machine and they tried to reattach it. This happened in 1971 when surgery wasn't as advanced as it is today. He used to tell me he wished they had just left it off.

I had my left ankle fused almost two years ago. For over a year and a half the pain in my ankle and foot was often unbearable, to the point where I, too, considered amputation. But then the pain lifted and in retrospect I think it was caused by extensive nerve damage caused by the original injury and the three subsequent surgeries to correct it, not the fusion itself. I'm more than 30 years older than you are so we'll see how it goes from here on out. BTW, they don't remove your ankle joint when they fuse your ankle. As your x-ray plainly shows, they just screw the bones that comprise the joint together. The idea is to have those bones grow together to restore integrity to the joint. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor but this is how four different foot and ankle specialists explained it to me.

On July 11th 2014 I fell 14 feet on a ladder resulting in SCI at L4 and required 3 level fusion. Leaving me with permanent nerve damage in spine and less than 40 percent nerve function in my left leg. Over the last 6.5 years I have spent the entire time in a cast, boot or AFO due to foot drop and partial paralysis in my leg ankle and foot. I have broken my left ankle 3 times and have wasted the ligaments and tendons from trying to keep using it with any assistive device I could surgery to repair ligaments and tendons has never been an option since essentially my leg is 60 percent paralyzed and it would just screw them up again in no time. So I just kept pushing myself and got to the point that I cannot manage the swelling enough to even wear my boot or my leg brace ( they won’t fit ) and after getting multiple cellulitis infections and weeks on I’ve antibiotics my orthopedic surgeon said enough is enough and gave me two options full fusion as a salvage procedure or amputation. He said that using external bracing and casts was not a long term option nor any quality of life and swelling and infections were dangerous and not worth the risk ! Having Tibio talo calcanien fusion ( probably misspelled that ) with hind foot approach and tibial rod! On Wednesday 12/2/20 I’m 41 and have 6 kids ranging from 7 months to 18, so I want to exhaust all options b4 going the amputation route!

My doctor and I discussed fusion and replacement. Ultimately we didnt feel that would solve my issues. We opted to "reconstruct" it which was essentially 3 different procedures in one long surgery. Recovery has been challenging. 2.5 years later and still healing in ways. But it is still better than what I had before. My doctor and I had a lot of discussion on expectations. This was always going to be a long process. And it was never going to solve all my problems. Better was the end goal for me.

i had my ankle fused after living in pain for ten years.. When I had bacterial meningitis, and skin grafts covering mostly my legs and arms, my right calf lost some muscle and tissue which all left my ankle kind of "twisted". I was really close to considering amputation but after a sudden fracture out of nowhere, i pleaded with my doctor for help. I have bad days as well but i can definitely tolerate most activities that i wasn't able to enjoy prior to the surgery.

I had an ankle fusion, and three operations there after, it has been 4 years since my last one, I am still in very bad pain, mostly of the outer side of the foot. Walking is terrible Walking my dog once in the day around the block actually makes my foot scream in pain. And when I get up in the morning and put the foot down I get a terrible shooting pain up my leg. I live on pain killers , and when I say that I mean like up to 6 a day. I have asked to have my foot removed. People think hard about a fusion talk to people who have had this, like your experience I'm living it now and it is hell. Sad to hear your story but I know exactly what u went threw. Colin

jimmy s. Hey Jimmy, I’m 58 and had my ankle fused 2 years ago and I had a really good result. I had an MRI first and the surgeon said that although my ankle was buggered the other joints were in very good condition which is good because they are the ones you are going to rely on after the fusion. Once I was free of the boot and crutches and I could just wear shoes the first hurdle was going up and down stairs. This was awkward at first but once your brain adjusts it’s very normal and most people wouldn’t know, in fact I had to show people the difference in the movement between my ankles for them to understand. I also decided that because it was now up to the smaller joints to take the load I would try to preserve them as much as possible so I stopped any activities that would cause excessive wear. No more running or long walks with my wife which used to be a very regular thing for us. That doesn’t mean no exercise though as I still use the gym as it doesn’t effect using weights except squats. One thing you won’t adjust to is walking up a steep incline simply because you don’t have an ankle to give you the flex you need. So i hope like me you have a good result and find that having the fusion far outweighs the pain and suffering you are now feeling. Good luck and cheers 🍻 Stuart 🇦🇺

@@spinaway Hi Jimmy, I’m sorry to hear that. How does a fusion fail? It sounds like you’re in for trouble. My wife and I were in a car accident in April 21 when a couple of idiots on drugs hit us head on at 80km/h or 50mph. They were both killed and we suffered a lot of broken bones but at least we survived. My right leg, the one with the fused ankle didn’t fair so well with every bone in my right foot fractured and the tibia had the lobes on the top where it meets the knee sheared off and the bone split down the middle leaking bone marrow out into my leg. The surgeons were fantastic and managed to use plates and lots of screws to put it all back together. Because of the damage to my feet I have gone from a standard size 12 to a 13 xx wide so I get special shoes from the US. My right wrist was badly broken which has required having that fused like my ankle and that has been a real set back as I’m right handed. My left shoulder rotator cuff was torn off the bone so more surgery to stitch that back together. At least that made the broken ribs and other injuries seem mild😂. At this rate in ten years I’ll look like the terminator and I don’t think I’ll be getting through airport security next time I go to get on a plane. Any way it seems we both are looking forward to many months of rehab so I wish you the best of luck my friend. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm living with a failed ankle fusion now, similar to you, as I have pain everyday. It's just some days are less than others. I'm increasing looking at my next op being an amputation (I'd obviously prefer an op to work and take my pain away) but I'm expecting my first child and don't want me to hold them and their childhood experiences back. Unfortunately it's my right ankle and I drive for a living so I'm scared that will need to stop. Every night seems to be a research hole, in trying to find a solution. Videos like this give hope, thank you.

Thanks for sharing your story. I have fibrosis dysplasia in my rt femur. My first surgery was when I was eighteen years old. They grafted bone from the fibula and hip to the upper part of the femur, they had to remove an inch from the femur, and they cut some nerves in the fibula, which resulted in foot drop. They keep wanting to fuse the right ankle, but it puts to much presser on the femur which could result in a broken femur. If that happened I would an amputee from the hip down. So hearing your story just confirmed that for me fusing the ankle is not a great idea. I'm 68 years old and a brace that allows the ankle to move up and down is my best solution. You sharing your story has been helpful to so many times.

Hi Jo, I just found your channel a few months ago, in April 2022 I fell from a ladder and severally fractured my right ankle as well,I suffered the worst break possible completely breaking my foot from my leg, I had surgery the following afternoon and unfortunately after a few months got on it to soon and it shifted,I have delt with it best I could dealing with the same issues you had, swelling, hard put jeans on, pain etc, last week it started getting very red and I found I had developed a very severe MRSA infection in my ankle that started spreading throughout my body, I am currently in the hospital fighting it, fortunately my doctors are treating the infection very aggressively and I am actually beating the infection , I have had as of now over 40 bags of IV antibiotics and will survive the infection, unfortunately they did have to remove my foot to get rid of the bulk of the infection out of my body ,I have a second surgery tomorrow 7/19/23 to finalize the amputation and to ensure infection is all removed and closing up my leg, they plan on starting to fit me for a prosthetic in about four weeks I will be definitely watch a more of your videos so I know what to expect in the coming months as I recover from this injury

@@bladess1000 hi Sean, life definitely changed after having 2 ankles fused, simple things like bending down to pick something up becomes nia on impossible. Going up and down stairs, on and off the toilet lol, they all become a struggle but do-able. Wondering if anyone else has faced something similar to me. Sprained my ankle when I was 12 (2012), and after that I would continually resprain it to the point where it wouldn’t heal. It got to a point where I couldn’t take a step without it giving out on me. In 2017 I fell and severely sprained it, and then fell again 6 months later and snapped what little was left of my CFL and ATFL. Had surgery May of 2018, and what was supposed to be a double ligament repair ended up being a partial reconstruction and I had an internal brace placed as well. Because of how bad my ligaments were before they completely tore, my fibula and talus (I believe was the second bone. It was the middle of my ankle) had shifted place. The end of my fibula was almost completely level with my heal bone, and there was a fairly decent sized gap between some other bones in the middle of my ankle that wasn’t supposed to be there. Flash forward to December of 2019 I had a revision surgery to remove internal sutures, and there was a ton of scar tissue that my surgeon cleaned out, and also did a tendon release as well, for the second time (did it during the first surgery as well). It’s now June of 2020 and I still have a ton of pain in my ankle, primarily in the spots where the bones were manipulated during my first surgery, and also don’t have any feeling around the incision (normal) and all down the side/top of my foot from the middle toe to my pinky toe due to a compressed nerve from scar tissue. My surgeon said the pain and numbness I’m having will likely never go away because of how bad the damage was and how much he had to manipulate my bones in the first surgery. I’m studying forensic science and am going into my senior year and have to be able to be on my feet, but the pain is so bad most days I walk with a cane (also have an autoimmune disease so I use it for stability as well). I’m at a loss for what to do. PT doesn’t work, scar tissue massage doesn’t work, acupuncture, pain meds (can’t take narcotics because I get terrible migraines on them), ice heat you name it, it doesn’t work. I’m 20 years old and have been dealing with issues with my ankle for 8 years now, and I’m really getting tired of it. My surgeon said with how much scar tissue was built up in only a year and a half there’s a possibility I’ll need more scar tissue removal surgeries in the future. I want to be able to run and play volleyball again, but some days I can barely walk because of it and I’m at a loss.

Hey Jo! I’ve been recovering from a wreck for 2 yrs now. I’ve had 20 surgeries. I had a shattered ankle, tib fib open compound fracture, fractured kneecap, torn patellar tendon, torn bowels, perforated abdomen, punctured spleen, fractured ribs, fractured spine, neck injury, TBI, and PTSD. I’ve had multiple complications to include bone infections, dead bone, and malunion/non-union of my RLE. My ankle is self fused but it’s still very painful and it feels like someone is stabbing me even when I have it elevated, I also have a bone chip in my knee that’s floating around and hitting my patellar tendon, and my tibia still hasn’t healed. On Monday, I’m talking to a new dr about the complications and amputation (my dr is deployed). I’m really not sure what all to ask. It would be great if you could advise me since you’ve been through limb salvage and amputation

I had 2 fusions done to my right ankle; (both joints are fused at the moment) I originally broke my right ankle in a car accident and it didn’t heal right which ended in severe foot drop and it sucks so bad! The pain is sometimes unbearable but I try and put on a brave face on everyday. I thought about below the knee amputation but my healthcare providers don’t think it’s a good route for me because it won’t necessarily guarantee me a less painful limb but might end up making it worse :(

Thank you for sharing your fusion story and all the rest of your foot/ankle/amputation stories! It's too bad the fusion didn't work great for you, but you seem to have dealt with that. BTW, do you have any recommendations on other KZbin or social media creators that deal with foot/ankle issues? Personally, I'm dealing with severe osteoarthritis in my ankle and had my first surgery last summer to correct my foot and alignment, which had 12 week recovery so I too got to test out all sorts of mobility aids. +1 for the iWalk for long-term walking/standing, but it is pretty cumbersome to put on and off. So far, the surgery has helped me a lot, but there's not much cartilage left, so I'm heading for joint replacement sooner than later and probably eventual fusion. Again, thanks for all your insights. P.S. more Brian content please, if he's game.

I had my ankle fused last November. I'd been dealing with a fully arthritic, bone on bone ankle for over 6 years at that point because of a bad break from a head on collision with a drunk driver. The pain wound up getting bad enough I couldn't walk without a medical boot to hold everything together (my tibia at that point was being worn down by the bones grinding together). Since I already had lost the up and down motion in my foot due to the arthritis, the decision for fusion was made. We even did a surgery beforehand to remove the hardware from the original break to see if any motion returned, which it did not. Between that and the fusion surgery I was off my foot for many months. Now almost a year later, my foot is still in so much pain. Some days are better, but if I do pretty much any walking (like 1000 steps or more) I really pay for it. I'm not sure what the fusion did except I assume stop my tibia from being ground down and my leg essentially becoming shorter. I have additional pain that runs down the top of my foot (that honestly can wind up feeling like the bones of my foot are breaking or broken. Just sharp, awful pain). Plus, I still have ankle pain, and at night as I'm falling asleep a lot of nights, my foot will jerk so hard I wake up screaming out in excruciating pain. I'm super slow moving, walk with a cane to try and relieve some of the pressure on my foot, and just all around miserable. My ortho doc says pain management is the only other thing now, which is a big non-answer to me. I'm only 45, and have a family that I want to be able to go places and do things with. I'm reallllly considering amputation at this point, hence why I found myself here. 😢

Why do they want to fuse your ankle
@robertbarminski6402 Жыл бұрын
Wow this is crazy... i dealt with a lot of the same factors as you (fused ankle, ridiculous number of surgeries, etc.) I also had a bone infection that kept coming back and because the inital break that caused my leg issues (Pilon fracture) the surgeons were limited in what they could do for the infection. Traditonally they would go scrape the bone where its infected and place abtibiotic beads but unfortunately i had a lot of hardware they couldn't take out and i had a skin flap that they couldnt cut into and on top of all that the orthopedic specialist said that i had the bone infection for so long (years) part of my bone was now dead so it made it nearly impossible to clear the infection. Anyways i broke my leg in 2016 hady ankle fused and i just had my right leg amputated below the knee this past september of 2023. I couldnt believe it when i heard you describing the fused ankle because i havent really met anyone who has had one. You described it perfectly....and i agree that the fused ankle for all of its setbacks was ultimately a blessing because it did allow to us to move around relatively normally. I really didnt have a choice with my amputation...i put if off for two years and ut got to the point where i saw my primary care provider, an orthopedic specialist in Monterey, another orthopedic specialist in santa cruz and my orthopedic specialist was from ucsf and they were all telling me they couldnt believe i was still alive and that i could be feeling fine on a friday and the infection could turn septic and i could be on my deathbed by Monday morning. I knew ut was serious when i went to ucsf and i hadnt seen my doctor for over a year and i could he was genuinely shocked i was still alive. He literally assumed i had passed away. Anyways sorry for rambling. Thank you gor you positive vibes. Youre a bad ass indivdual and i look up to you

I've had a triple fusion on my left foot twice, an arch reconstruction, Achilles tendon lengthening procedure & a heel realignment. This has done nothing but cause me very severe pain. I have a birth defect called skew foot which has caused my bone structure in my feet to be twisted. It feels like someone took my foot & twisted it around & told me to walk on it. I live in severe pain every day. I was told I wouldn't qualify for a below the knee amputation because this has affected my knees & you need good needs to have a below the knee amputation. I live on a knee scooter & spend most of my day sitting as I can't stand any more than a minute. I was so active & used to walk several miles every day. Now I can barely walk to my car. I've been wearing braces for a few years now & even those are not helping any more. This keeps me awake at night not knowing what's going to become of me. Both my feet are filled with arthritis but only the left one has been fused. I'm too scared to get the right one done.It really sucks when your mobility has been taken away. I don't want to have to go into a wheelchair. That to me is not living.

I'm getting an anterior ankle fusion along with a big toe fusion in about 2 months. I have foot drop, and the back surgery I had last year didn't fix the issue. It is well over a year since it happened. Ironically, I'm already used to walking heel-first on that foot. The main difference will be that I won't have to wear a brace anymore (the anterior ankle fusion will act as kind of an internal brace).
