I have a beagle, so he’s always smelling or tracking things. He knows that when we’re on the sidewalk he has to walk by my side, and when we’re on grass he gets to walk on a looser leash and enjoy the sniffing. It’s a happy medium so he gets to be and is also safe. We also have a code word “together” so he knows he has to walk by my side again 🥰

Ah! Welcome to the teen months! Hahah. Our boy is 9 months and while their adolescence can be really difficult, I think it's a bit easier than early puppyhood, cause at least now he knows what the commands mean and what the rules are (whether he chooses to ignore them is a different story.... lol). The hardest part for us is that having a teen dog is like flipping a coin every day, you have no idea what you're gonna get. Is his recall gonna be amazing like yesterday or is it bad again today? Who knows? hahah. I loved seeing the update! Freya is such a calm girl, you've done an amazing job on teaching her to be calm. We're still working on that haha.

Freya is adorable! Wondering if Freya needs a lot of exercise? How many times do you walk her a day? Xx
@MyDriftingDesk3 жыл бұрын
Aussie's definitely do need a lot of exercise, but every dog is different in the exact amount they need. Freya gets two 30 minute walks a day (one in the morning and one at night) and then she gets about 2-3 hours of exercise mid-day (dog park, hikes, swimming, etc.) but that is if she doesn't go to Doggy Daycare, where she gets about 8 hours of exercise in addition to her two 30 minute walks. I hope that's helpful!

Helloooo!💕💕I’m not sure if you will look at this but I am convincing my parents to get me a dog! And since I travel a lot I’m not really able to get one. But my parents said that we might be able to get one but I’m not rlly sure yet! I first looked at your `getting a puppy` video and now I’m addicted to ur update videos! Your teaching me a lot so that I can prove to my parents that I can take care of a dog if I get one! ❤️☺️ Plus I feel like YOUR SO UNDERRATED, I first thought you had like 1 or 2 mil subs but when I look at 42k, I rlly couldn’t believe it tbh haha. In my head I was like `u DONT HAVE A MIL?!` since ur editing is SO amazing!! Oh btw I really want a toy poodle puppy or a Samoyed but probably a toy poodle. And I have a QUESTION! Why do u make her stop when u open the door for her?? (Sorry I always wondered) I hope u remember me even though I know u have a lot of fans and no pressure u don’t have to remember me LOL 😅😊 And again, thanks!

aww she's getting so big! I noticed when you were having her sit before crossing you were saying "can you sit?" which is a very normal thing to do. But instead, I would suggest saying "sit" or "Freya, sit". When you are in an emergency (like running in the street, chasing after something etc) your first instinct is not going to be saying "FREYA CAN YOU SIT" its probably going to be "FREYA, SIT. SIT FREYA. COME BACK" because that's what you want her to do. If she learns that in that situation (stopping before crossing) that to sit you say "can you" its going to make it a lot harder for her to listen to you in an emergency.

Me and my wife have a 5 month old Aussie puppy and I was wondering how you got Freya to stop chewing on hands. When ever we pet our puppy (Jettson) he always wants to chew on our hands. He is also starting to give us attitude when we ask him to sit or lay or really any command, could that be separation anxiety? He is never alone in his crate for more than a couple of hours and we give him lots of lovings all the time. Also how bad does Freya shed? Cause Jettson is always shedding.
@MyDriftingDesk3 жыл бұрын
honestly with Freya it was a phase that lasted until she was about 4-5 months and after she lost all her baby teeth!! the teething and puppy biting lasts a while but we were strict and consistent with not allowing it and it helped her catch on faster! I wouldn't say attitude with commands is separation anxiety, but I'm not sure! Freya is in that defiant stage of not listening all the time, but it's more she's testing our boundaries, so I would stay firm and consistent in what you ask of them and only reward and reinforce those good behaviors that you want!! They'll learn quicker that way! Freya has finally started shedding and it's A LOT hahah. we have freya hair dust bunnies rolling around daily lol.

So I was wondering how you established play time vs down chill time with Freya from puppy until now? And how do you get her to go potty easily?
@MyDriftingDesk3 жыл бұрын
we worked on "chill time" a lot as a puppy in certain areas of the house (on the couch and on the bed etc.) those places she can't play, but she can play anywhere else and we don't mind!! If she's TOO rowdy we put her in her place for her to calm down on her own but with a little help, she usually calms down nicely because we keep her well mentally and physically stimulated and exhausted. A TIRED DOG IS A HAPPY AND GOOD DOG!!! 💚

The first couple months of getting her did you ever worry she wouldn’t learn tricks and basic behaviors? Ofc they’re young puppies and 8 months old is still very young and an age where they learn. But I have a 4 month old aussie and I’m scared he’s falling behind on training/behavior/aggression. Tips? Thank you 🥰
@MyDriftingDesk3 жыл бұрын
every dog is different for sure! Some catch on quickly, others will take a while. I wouldn't be worried, but I would stay consistent and train more if you're wanting them to catch on quicker. we have been the same with Freya since day 1 so she learned wrong and acceptable behaviors quickly because it was the same every time. so decide what your boundaries are and what you want your dog to do and how you want them to behave and hold them to that standard every day all the time and they'll learn quicker than just sometimes having to sit before meals, or before leaving a door, etc. they'll know that it's ALL THE TIME! ❤️

My dog was 10 months old, he had been living with me for 3 months, he sleeps in my room and I lock the room every night because I also use my bedroom as safe place/crate for him because we recently moved here so it's pretty empty and safe (he doesn't have a real crate because I adopted him and "cages" make him really anxious cause he was rescued from a puppy mill for breeding, but we are working on it, now he has a crate which looks more like a fenced mini area like Freya's). One night I decided to leave the door open because he always sleeps the whole night and nights we're getting hotter so yeah, why not leave the doors open and let some fresh air in? he is going to sleep anyway... no... I have an almost 2 year old yellow lab, and a 9 week old australian shepherd. My lab never had normal poops either, and I went through a lot of different foods trying to find one that worked for her! We recently switched to rachel Ray nutrish because it has probiotics and prebiotics in it, and her poop finally has become normal! I still think she might have a slight allergy to something in it because her eyes are still red a lot of the time, but it's a vast improvement over what it used to be. In the future I might try something new and just add some plain Greek yogurt to the top of it or something. Tip for the whining in the morning: start getting up and doing your morning routine without letting her out and switch up what point of your routine you let her out at. That way she doesn’t get so used to a routine that she anticipates what’s going to happen. Same for when you come home, take off your shoes put your stuff away etc and then let her out. It also helps her not associate the crate with being alone.

Why do u use collars instead of a harness? Just wondering

we just prefer them! :) she has some harnesses but she just hasn't liked them since she was a puppy and prefers the collar.

any teething advice??
@MyDriftingDesk3 жыл бұрын
Here's what we did with Freya with her teething/biting phase: whenever she would bite/nip us we would use our correction word, which is “ah-ah-ah” and if she stopped biting, even for a second, we would praise and give treats and continue play with her. If she didn't stop biting then we would offer her a toy to redirect her behavior to and if she took the toy instead of continuing to bite us, we would praise and give treats and continue to play. Sometimes (of course) she wouldn't stop biting even for a toy, and in that case we would stand up and physically remove ourselves from her. We would go behind our baby gate and turn our back to her and ignore her until she calmed down, laid down, or started playing with a toy on her own and when she did we one of those things we would praise and give treats and come back to play. It definitely was A LOT of standing up and leaving, sitting down, then standing right back up in the beginning (it’s exhausting and annoying). But you gotta be consistent and do it EVERY TIME for them to learn quicker! Don't do it sometimes and not others, or they’ll get confused on ~when~ it’s okay to bite, when it should be NEVER okay to bite. It definitely still took some time for her to learn this (it probably wasn't until 4 months old that she totally stopped) but it would DRASTICALLY decrease the amount of times she would bite us AND decrease the amount of time it took for us to get her to stop biting us when she did. It's also recognizing that biting is how dogs explore the world and with teething being painful, all they want to do is chomp lmao. So giving them toys of different textures, hardness, taste, size, etc. to spend time chewing is important! So definitely give your dog things they CAN chew and LOVE chewing. This is just how we taught her what she can and can’t chew on. I hope that's helpful!!! In the end, it honestly just takes time. It won't stop in a week, or probably even two. Once they lose their baby teeth those behaviors usually fall off, but being consistent will help this process go quicker! GOOD LUCK!
