If you look into a front clip harness I would recommend looking into the problems it can cause with their shoulders and such. Instead, I recommend trying to turn around and walk in the opposite direction every time she pulls and pair it with a cue (I.e. “walk with me” or “with me” or whatever you want it to be). Do this EVERY TIME she pulls on the lead and it should stop pretty quickly. This helps the dog know that pulling is an undesired behavior and they are never rewarded for pulling. Stopping and waiting for her to sit only really teaches her that in order to get the reward (where she wants to go) she has to sit when you stop. She’s not making the connection that the pulling part is unwanted. You might walk around in circles at first but I think she should pick it up pretty quickly. EDIT: I watched 2 more seconds XD I would take time and do some dedicated training sessions to teach her loose leach walking in a controlled setting. Start indoors, then in the hallway, then out in a quiet part of your apartment. Only using your walk to train that isn’t giving her enough repetition to learn what you want. The cue word would also really help! Love seeing you guys and I think you’re doing really great with her! Keep it up!

Although a collar isn’t great to attach a lead to it can actually collapse the trachea so it isn’t recommended, personally I prefer harnesses and my aussie responds to it well but it depends on your own dog.

For pulling we have a 5 month old golden retriever named Daisy and we use a gentle leader on her. Daisy did not like it for the first week but if you are consistent with it they don’t mind it. It still gives them full use of there mouth because Daisy likes to carry sticks on walks.

For my older Aussie, turning a going in the opposite direction worked great for teacher her loose leash walking. For my younger Aussie I got him purposely for sports so he’s extremely high drive and that didn’t work. We ended up using a prong collar and it worked greatly. We now have another 12 week old Aussie and we are trying the turning method and he seems to be doing well with that. I think it depends on the dog and what works for them.
@MyDriftingDesk

oh for sure!! every dog is different! She does really well with sitting whenever I stop, but I think in the end the turning around will help her learn not to pull in the first place!
@Thomas-eo3dy

Leash walking tip: Never let your dog get ahead of you. It's not an "alpha" thing, but if your dog is ahead of you, nothing really good can ever come out of that. Either they have to regularly frantically turn around to have you in sight and reach, or regularly bump into the leash, generally having fewer focus on you. So in the moment where Freya would be overtaking you, do an immediate hard turn and start walking elsewhere. Got my toller puppy to not pull after doing that for half an hour. Hard distractions are still difficult after a week, but after going through *everything* else this is the one thing that brought immediate and long-lasting results. If you just stop your dog might get really anxious if they're hyper, but by never letting them in front of you you're setting a better tone for them and they have a better point of reference. Would maybe do that with a regular harness so you don't have to feel bad for dragging them along the first few times when doing an immediate turn. The thing I like about this method is that it's not a "always heel right next to me or you'll get a leash jerk" kinda method, it's just "aight do whatever you want but if you get one step ahead we turn immediately" which stops the behaviour so effectively

My Aussie Callie has a chicken allergy too! We feed her NutriSource Pure Vita Duck & Oatmeal as we don't want her on a grain free diet either, haha! It is RIDICULOUSLY hard to find a Limited Ingredient Grain Inclusive food, oh man! For pulling, we use the Ruffwear Front Range Harness! It has a front clip, which was amazing for training loose leash. We transitioned to the top clip when she learned that loose leash means good walks, haha! Callie is also on leash reactive (mostly to dogs), and we play engage/disengage! It's easy to do, and it's helping her be neutral to her triggers while she's on leash. You're such a wonderful pet parent!

My trainers have heavily advised AGAINST dogs meeting while on leash (or if your dogs is on leash and the other isn’t or Vice versa). There can’t just be too many variables that can lead to stress. I also no longer go to dog parks for personal reasons. Instead, I try to set up a meeting/play date with potential new dog friends!

@mlynn998
@mlynn998 3 жыл бұрын
It’s all about management. Don’t let there be anything on the counter they can get to, and be sure to reward them when all 4 paws are on the floor. They’ll get it eventually, but real training takes a lot of time and work.

@@mochiyeosang1908 yeah, in that case, it’s all about teaching them the appropriate behaviors bc dogs don’t automatically know not to jump on the counters. Definitely look up the 4 paws on the floor game. It basically just teaches dogs that having all paws on the floor is the best place to be and discourages them from jumping. But it does take a while, as with all meaningful training

He's entering the teenage phase for SURE! It's going to get SO BAD before it gets better lol. but stay consistent with your directions, commands, boundaries, expectations, routines, training, etc. and it'll pass quicker! Freya's lasted about 2-3 months and she's probably still in it, but it's so much better because we are consistent in what we ask of her and we are firm! We don't allow things that we don't want, no matter the temper tantrum she throws and we follow through with every command, even if she doesn't want to do it. My advice for counter surfing is to reward HEAVILY when all 4 paws are on the ground. treats, praise, love, high pitch voice, etc. and when he's on the counter give your correction word (ours is ah-ah-ah) and if he gets down on his own after the correction, treats, praise, love, high pitch voice, etc. if he doesn't on his own then you lure him to the ground with a treat or remove his paws from the counter and place on the ground gently and then treats, praise, love, high pitch voice, etc. because all 4 paws are on the ground. he'll learn that he gets nothing from the counter, but tons of treats, praise, love, high pitch voice, etc. when he's on the ground and will choose that behavior more. behaviors that get reinforced are reinforced. if he gets something out of getting on the counter (food you leave there etc.) then he'll keep doing it. so make sure there's nothing he can get to ever. and just keep praising for being on the ground. or when he's inside have him on a leash so you can physically stop him from jumping on the counter.

Freya is actually an Australian Shepherd & English Shepherd mix, 50/50! Her dad is full working breed Aussie and mom is full English Shepherd, so her fur is shorter from the working side, but also because she's young and their coats don't start to come in for a while! But it'll probably always stay on the shorter end because she's not in the showline with the long beautiful coat!!
