You have it a bit wrong they like to enter the feet between the toes where the skin is softer. When they do burrow in it leaves a small painful itchy sore called a “dew itch or “ground itch”. It will start laying eggs in the blood steam in the thousands a day the eggs will be dispelled thru the lungs. The eggs in the lungs will make one cough over & over thur out the day. Some will stay in the mouth where they feel like a very fine grit & will be swallowed. The eggs will hatch in the intestine where the worm will hook up to the wall of the intestine & suck blood. There are still hookworms in the USA. Meds in the USA to get rid of them start at $800 for four tablets I'm sure one can get meds for a 20 dollar bill in Mexico. I have read that a good pet dewormer works because your pets get hookworms also & thats what one gives them. So how many pets in your area have worm & maybe defecating in your yard or area parks beware. When the grass is wet with dew they will craw up the grass blade & wait for its next host. The dew helps them stick to their next host then they make their way to a soft tissue area.

There is increasing evidence that mild infection with hookworm is beneficial to the host. In that it modulates the immune system preventing over reaction to allergens. Protecting from autoimmune illnesses such as asthma, eczema etc. Its a matter of matching up the right organism with the right host.

Our new puppy that has been all over our home. I even bathed him in our sink and our bath tub. Today was diagnosed with hookworms, roundworms and tapeworms. I am so worried that my kids are now at risk of infestation. The vet said I am over reacting. I don't think I am. Please any feed back from a caring person like you would really help. Should my kids see a doctor, how do I clean my house to kill any larvae? The puppy poops outside and we pick poop up at that time. Do I need to treat my yard? My son had to go to the er last week due to pain on upper left side x-ray showed he was backed up. But we didn't know our dog had worms yet.

Many worm species that infect dogs do NOT infect humans. But if it were my children, I would definitely call the nurse’s line at my pediatrician office just in case. Your pediatrician has probably gotten these exact questions before and will be able to help.

We got a puppy which I found out had hookworms. My kid got very sick from them too. He suffered for a few months but the doctor kept saying he was ok and the stool sample was negative. We treated him anyway and he had clumps of worms in the stool. I know it’s been a while but what did you do? How are ur kids?

Major symptoms include abdominal pain and cramps, nausea, bloody stool, anemia, loss of appetite, fever, rash. Methods of prevention include wearing shoes outside and having access to hygienic toilets so that human waste isn't contaminating the environment where you are walking. Avoid skin contact with any soil that may be contaminated by human waste.

It is very common in Asia, North Africa and Europe.

I suppose it depends on what you consider "common". I also wonder if your textbook might be old. This research paper, from 2016, shows that hookworm cases in Europe are less than 0.1% of all hookworm cases worldwide. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5015833/ This source states that hookworm is "almost eradicated from Europe" www.aarogya.com/conditions-and-diseases/hookworm.html My understanding is that it is no longer nearly as common in Europe (or in North America) as it was several decades ago. Through unbroken bare skin. Typically they can chew through the soles of the bare feet to get to the bloodstream. You can prevent infection by wearing shoes anywhere the ground may be contaminated with hookworm from feces.
