You got that right. I love the smell of a red oak fire burning. Coming in from my shop in the cold Minnesota winters night, smelling my wood stove burning gives me a relaxed feeling, knowing I'll be toasty warm all night long with a steady heat, unlike my gas furnace that dries out the air and kicks in and out. I rarely ever turn up the furnace. It's only used if I'm away from the house for a couple days at a time. Give me wood heat any day!

About 5 years ago I got fed up with paying the price for propane to heat our home and water. We bought an outdoor boiler that heats with wood. Our small 5 acre lot has an abundance of dead Ash trees to provide seasoned firewood for another 5 or more years. I also welded a fireplace grate out of 1 1/2" steel pipe. I was relying on convection to move the heated air through the pipes but am planning to connecting a medium size blower to force the air through the heated pipes and into our living room. Nothing more comforting than a.wood fire to.heat a home. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

With your love for wood heating I have been curious why you don't have a wood cook stove also. Now I love my propane stove but there is nothing better tasting than everything made in the wood stove oven, cooked in the fireplace or out over the open fire. The mixture of wood smoke and coffee perking goes back as far as my memory does and brings that calming feeling that you speak of just watching the fire flicker. If YT gave out awards for "Best Video's" you would have a shelf of them. Thank you for sharing!

Norway TV had National Firewood Night where they broadcast 12+ hours of a fire -- discussing how to split, stack, etc. Millions tuned it. My fondest memories include cutting firewood with my dad. I hated having to drag in the nightly laid as a kid but I sure miss him and that now.

My favorite things. The work required to process firewood. Nothing better for you than being outside breathing hard and getting your heart pumping. Also, the radiant heat off of a wood stove is something you feel the moment you step inside. One more reason (of many) is the scent of the wood burning. It ranks up there with bread baking, which my wife does. So combine the two, oh boy ! PS, our cats love the wood stove as much as my wife and I. 😄 ✌

Couldn't agree more! I converted my wife who didn't grow up with wood heat, now she dislikes visiting family and friends who don't have wood heat. It definitely is a different kind of heat it feels right when you are in a house/building with wood heat.

I love watching your videos! One day I will heat my house with wood. Although I have tried to heat my side cabin with wood I have not seceded for many reasons. but as soon as I turn 18 and have saved up enough money for land and materials I will be heating my house with the materials that mother nature has provided, wood. you continue to be my favorite person to watch just as I stated long ago. Keep inspiring, Seth Osborn from the Stro Life channel. ✌

Wood is how I heat my home in PA. I own 20 acres of timberland and for the last 6 years I've harvested most of my wood from dead stand/ dead fall trees. Other than a new chainsaw this year, I've only spent $200 total. Can't beat that.

I'm so glad i came across this video, and look forward to watching more of yours! I am trying to make a decision between a gas insert or wood insert for my old fireplace. My friends think i should do gas for the convenience factor.. But i love the real thing and so I've been torn... I see where they are coming from, not wanting me to add more work for myself as a single parent... But a real fire is so therapeutic.. And i won't be able to look back someday at my 4 babes roasting a marshmallow before bed on a gas fireplace now can i! I honestly think I've been scouring utube to find a video to convince me to go for it! ...you may have accomplished that! 😏

Great video, Eric, as always. We had an unusually cold week last week with temperatures of five degrees two days in a row and it causes wonder how your weather has been. The wood heat has been especially appreciated here this past week with its ability to genuinely warm our bodies. These temperatures question in my mind the struggles our forebears certainly experienced in trying to keep themselves and their families warm, especially in times before electricity when the brutal cold would come. Nostalgia can help keep us grounded. Enjoyed your latest effort. Stay warm! Your friend in northwest Georgia, Jerry.

I love preparing wood,cutting,chopping,stacking. I built masonry cooking stove at home and bread oven outside.I have 3 masonry chimneys at home and all of them are working simultaneously. One more standing in my workshop,where another small kachel stove is connected to it. I am nuts probably but I cannot help it,burning wood make me connected to Nature.

I am starting my rotational cut process on our property. Select cut 20Acres 1/3 each year till I get to the end of the 160, by that point the first 20 would see its next cut 8 years later. Then take another 1/3. By the time we get back to it again to take the last 3rd, the first third would be 24 years old old and start the process again. Completely renewable

Ben Poliquin good question - due to the amount of undergrowth I will have plenty growing back up. 5 years ago we had our aspen clear cut on the property and it already is well over 10ft tall again. Our oak and maple groves also have plenty of undergrowth to keep carrying. As we watch it, I may replace some of the aspen next clear cut with pine to get better lumber out of the cuts

Brilliant video, Eric -- one of your best to date. Although I use my propane furnace much more than my wood stove (as I discuss in my reply to Andrew Kwon's comment), I'm glad I have the option to "go wood" when I get the urge. My son and DIL came for Christmas, and I was able to entertain them with a real fire, instead of the televised fireplace footage we watch when we spend the Holidays at their place in the city. (I still get a kick out of watching a fire on TV!) There's a brick pad for a stove in my garage/workshop, and I hope someday to be able to install a wood cookstove there. I've cooked over wood in the past, and I love it. Thanks for yet another great video!

Excellent mini-documentary vidja. For me it's like firewood is a well-earned by-product of the much larger process of woodland improvement. Invasive species (buckthorn mainly) are trying to take over in some places and over-crowding slows the process of regeneration and can favor less desirable species or lack of diversity (though different species have their own favorable growing conditions so a person can't push those limits too far and expect miracles). I don't want to downplay the firewood making process though since that ends up being the most time-consuming part (in other words, a person better enjoy that process!), especially this time of year. I have more rounds cut than I've been able to haul in but I reckon I better make an effort before the rain and snow moves in tonight. Snow and the fact that the leaves are gone from brush and weeds really helps me pick out down trees, as long as it doesn't get too deep!

Yep....you're a guy that gets it about burning wood ! Been burning it myself most of my life, and told the wife if it comes time to go to "the home", and they don't have a wood heat, count me out.....I'm staying here....ahahahaaa We burn about 4-6 cords/yr and I have 4 sheds positioned around the farm (to minimize hauling) that each hold 4 cords. Work on refilling one as soon as it gets empty, finishing up the last one this week, so we'll go into next year with 16 cords cut/split/dry plus 2 left over in the basement from this year. The shed finishing up now will be for the winter of 20-21. Better than money in a bank in my opinion. I look forward for you to the day when you can get a tractor with front loader and set of forks....that is the handiest thing for getting wood out. I bring mine out of the woods in 6-8' lengths on the forks to the closest shed, the buck in into firewood there. Saves some handling that way. Anyway, keep on burning fellow.....you're doing great !

Nice video. I have a thought but it may be just fit for me but here goes. I retired from a job that paid me well. Coat and tie deal for most of 30 years. But part of me has always stayed connected to nature through hunting, fishing, camping...Always had a fireplace because I love sitting in front of a fire. Thing is, I had and still have fun cutting and splitting wood. I like getting tired doing what my parents/grand parents had to do and then reaping those rewards by a warm fire. I know I might feel different if I had to do it to keep from freezing but I'd like to think not. My Dad grew up off grid and I've heard him say this more than once when someone would mention the "good ole days". He'd say "the good ole days are when you can walk over there and flip that switch and the lights come on". Matter of perspective I guess.

You mentioned that you do need some fossil fuel to get firewood, whether it be using a truck or a chains saw or something else to harvest wood. However, in addition to saving money on heating bills, I also never use my dryer. I put my washed laundry on a clothing rack and put the clothing rack in front of the fire. It dries the clothes nicely. Yes, you could just let it air dry but you also risk getting mold if it doesn't dry fast enough. Putting books, gloves, hats and mittens on a clothing rack also dries them out so nice in winter. I am in northern Alberta. Once the power went out for more than 12 hours. The power company was flying around in a helicopter until they found a damages power line that was damaged by excessive snow. Having a wood stove, at least as a backup (I use my regularly) is an absolute necessity in rural locations in northern Canada. Ash also goes in my garden which helps me grow food which does NOT need fossil fuel to transport it. I think the minimal fossil fuel used to harvest fire wood can be easily offset by growing local food, never using your drier and even boiling water for tea on the wood stove.

Great video Eric, this passion you have for fire/firewood is fantastic. I think everyone who harvests and processes firewood themselves, not only reap the physical benefits but get that extra warming glow inside watching the fire burn knowing their work has brought them this warmth. Without getting political, the sooner governments worldwide start reforesting not only unused rural but urban spaces the safer our planet will become. Keep up the good work, spread the word and happy new year to you and yours👌

I think wood is mostly for people who grew up around it. First let me say I like your videos and enjoy learning more about wood heat. That being said it took just a few short months for me to grow tired of the wood stove. I thought it would be fun, but it's just a chore no one in my household enjoys. I grew up with buried gas lines where you just set the temp you wanted, paid the bill end of story. Now 2 winters into heating with wood we dream of gas heat again since electric which is our other source of heat is expensive. First year we basically heated almost entirely with wood, second year we increased the electric heat which is a bit more of a balance. Keeping the right temp especially at night, or if we are out for the day can be troublesome. I really wish someone would invent a self loading wood stove. The biggest issue we have is no one ever wants to go outside and get more wood to bring in. Second biggest is everyone can't sleep in (me) because the stove needs to be refilled. Since I work from home it's fine during the day but occasionally I like to sleep in. I hope you don't mind this somewhat negative response, I do think it's a great heat source it's just not for everyone. It's hard to imagine heating with wood until you actually do it for months on end. I can't imagine cutting, splitting and drying it too as I just have it delivered. To end my rant on a positive note I lit my stove back in November and it's still going from the initial lighting. Not possible without learning from videos like yours. I'd much rather learn like this then asking people who assume everyone knows everything about wood.
@jeanettewaverly2590
@jeanettewaverly2590 6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Kwon, I can empathize with you. I don't think your response is unduly negative -- "realistic" might be a filtting descriptor for it. I have a wood stove and a propane furnace, and I use the furnace much more frequently than the stove. I enjoy a nice blaze once in a while, but, like you, I don't relish all the physical labor required to totally heat with wood. Also, I have asthma and allergies, which are exacerbated by the smoke and gasses produced by burning wood. This comment is not meant to "dis" wood heat, nor to minimize its many advantages and "greenness." But, as you say, it's not for everyone.

I understand the sentiment. I am lucky as my wife's family did have wood heat back in Shenzhen before coming to Canada. To Wei, it is a throwback to his youth and he's actually happy to be coming out to a more rural place. My wife is not so fussy for it...preferring NG. Therefore, the fire is on when I am home, or the father in law is out. When Wing is home alone...nope. :) It isn't for everyone, but I get what this video is saying.

Add me to the list. I just today after tons of research purchased a Buck Wood Heater, Model 81 from a small reputable dealership that also does professional installation. My insurance company loves it. It will be our second source of heat should things go stupid. I’ve been stacking firewood for a few years in anticipation. Folks that know me actually let me know when they have an oak on the ground. They know I’ll harvest it and not let it go to waste.
