Six Years Ago I Put Saltwater in a Jar, This Happened | Natural Saltwater Ecosphere 6 Year Update

Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

Күн бұрын

Six years ago I made this huge natural native saltwater ecosphere in a jar. It has had a lot of ups and downs, but to this day is still very successful. The ecosphere has housed crabs, starfish, spionid worms, gammarids and a lot more and is currently still housing a lot of crustaceans, paramecium, and other invertebrates and microbes. This seawater ecosystem has been a stable tiny world in a jar for years now, and who knows how many more to come!
Enjoy!

I'm glad there are people who care about the life on our doorstep. (or in the puddle on the sidewalk ) . Why always wander into the distance when there is a real treasure of life in the puddle in front of the house? Wanting to find out something out of your own motivation without it being a fashion trend... That's passion. Truly a true gentleman.

And these jars, along with my own and now my kids ecosystems, bring me near limitless joy and comfort from knowing when I’m gone my home ,my ‘jar’ if you will, will be ok. American anglers and fish farmers often add salt to freshwater for creating longevity and vigor in freshwater fish. It helps with the slime coat and other issues. Since your saltwater ecosystem is your most successful experiment, have you considered adding salt to a new freshwater ecosystem (with an exact duplicate with no salt as a control) to see if there is a noticeable change in vigor and longevity. I'm thinking of how, in the distant future, terraforming planets will be a thing as we establish colonies out in the stars. Once we figure out faster, better modes of transport, we'll need ways to preserve and prepare species for transport. Salt to freshwater ecosystems may be a gateway into this type of research...a way for you to inspire budding future scientists that might one day be working in this fairly new field of study.

This is very common in the aquascaping/fishkeeping hobby. Adding salt to a tank is a great way to temporarily strengthen a fish’s immune system, or assist them in fighting infection. It’s actually bad for freshwater plants, however, and is recommended to be removed through water changes after a short period of time.

@@Wiswaswes Well actually no, he says them in latin/greek (usually latin but sometimes greek is used for scientific names), language they are in, but with a dutch accent. Which again, I find adorable, but makes it slightly incorrect. This is all I'm saying. He says the words correctly essentially, but with the wrong pronunciation, which makes it wrong. Latin is latin and has a specific pronunciation, even if you are saying them while speaking another language. You do not say Carpe Diem with an english accent, you say it with latin accent XD

I love this! As a kid I got amazed at a gutter that didn't drain well, and it contained green slime over mud,and then it had a white worm that stretched it's snout(?I think,or whatever)out long to it's destination. This was in an urban area that had so little of the wild things that I wanted to see.I absolutely love little ecosystems that can be studied. You hit the nail on the head as far as I am concerned! It would be so cool to also figure out what the very tiny creatures are.I am so glad you posted this, because I was so sad that the ocean water seemed hopelessly dead.

This reminds me of my tiny ecosystem that is brackish water with my tiny shrimp, opae ula . They are 6 years old now, and thriving! The only difference is that my lid isn’t airtight, also I have to add water every 6-8 months to keep up with what dissolves. But I went from 5 shrimp to around 60-80 maybe more?! I absolutely love watching them live and thrive, have an entire new generation and how the colors change with each generation.
