Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

4 жыл бұрын

Last video I showed you how I made a locally sourced aquascape, for tadpoles. Today we take a closer look at all the other animals that live in this native aquarium. There's quite a lot of interesting little critters, such as flatworms, aquatic isopods, water beetles, and several insect larvae and pupae. We also take a look at how the tadpoles turned into young toads.
Enjoy!

I love your little toads, and the flatworm. I’m not sure what had the critter chasing the toad, but he is lucky the toad wasn’t hungry. You have some fascinating wild life in there. It is so exciting to see what evolves out of a little homemade pond. I really enjoy your updates. I did feel a little sorry for the isopods...just trying to get a little privacy for their little intimate moment. The little toad sitting on your fingertip didn’t seem too interested in going back home, but I wish them luck.🖤🇨🇦

I took a picture of a colony of marine springtails floating together in a tide pool in Maine. They looked like little bluegray isopods. Very cool! I purpose the water beetle’s English name be ‘Caramel Scuba Beetle,’ since they don’t need to surface for air, and their Dutch name is really cute and descriptive. Also, did you know that certain types of water beetles are farmed for human consumption in some parts of the world? Humans really are incredible; we can manage to eat just about anything!

Hello, My boyfriend and I really enjoy your videos. We're both postgrad zoology/entomology students and, like you, have tanks at home that we fill with all sorts of things from our local area for observation. We find it particularly interesting seeing the differences and similarities in fauna and flora between the Netherlands and South Africa (for instance, we don't get salamanders here, but chironomids, springtails, daphnia, and backswimmers are shared taxa). I wish some of my lab students showed half the interest that you do, your observations and comments on what is going on in your contained ecosystems are incredibly insightful. Thank you for sharing your hobby with us.

That's awesome, I used to catch and raise tadpoles as a kid. Only bonus animals I'd get is mosquito larvae and the occasional dragonfly larvae. Wed have to get rid of the dragonfly though because they'd eat the smaller tadpoles. The mosquitos would only last until we'd catch a big bullfrog tadpole who'd eat them all.

Reminds me when I used to collect tadpoles from nearby ponds to see them grow. I was fascinated in how they grew legs out of nowhere. There was this one small pond that always filled with water but dried up after a few weeks and in it it always had this kind of crustacean looking insects that look like sea monkeys that always appeared each time the pond re-filled with rain water.

@@dunklyn5798 not necessarily, mutation drives evolution as much as natural selection. Punctuated bursts of genetic mutations can rapidly change a species in a relatively short period of time, especially when the species has a small lifespan and fast sexual maturation, like many insects.

I cannot stop watching your videos. I want to create one of these ecosystems so much! Have you ever thought about making one out of fresh and salt water? Just to see what happens? Or even one out of equal parts of fresh, salt, and rain water? Something would have to grow! After all, we have aquatic life that thrives in brackish waters!!!
@brokenwishbone422
@brokenwishbone422 3 жыл бұрын
Thats pretty awesome. I'm pretty sure most of the toads would have been eaten by that stage in life, so its good you helped them along some. I remember when I was a kid there would be frogs, toads, and turtles outside. Literally every time it rained for a bit they would wander out onto wider open areas. Now, you have to really hunt for them and you may not find any. Some areas are better than others here in Maryland but caring about wildlife still goes out the window if there is money to made. All of our local waters are contaminated and they all go into the Chesapeake Bay.

See, I am pretty sure we aren't allowed to do that here, even if you return the toads (and a crested salamander will get you arrested (!!!) in some parts of the UK). But you have a terrarium, Aquarium, with full intention of everything good. (and thank you from us that cannot raise them and release) They are adorable! I have worked as a herpetologist since I was 17 under the mentor-ship of a very incredible Dr. in the field--now past, RIP Dr.Rankin! Even though it isn't now my main thing, it astounds and warms my heart to see a young, brilliant mind doing some awesome things with a camera! The Lurid Glider!! What a great name!! I am also afraid we don't have those here...(They look like a very large planarium!). So far, we are watching the Copepods pooping is the hardest to see...lol! They move very quickly after! Lovely aquarium!!
