i did everything for my father, cared for him for years and was by his side until he died. he told me verbally that i had helped him the most and would therefore inherit the most. my 3 older siblings also knew this. after his death, however, his inheritance was divided equally between the 4 of us and my mother, although one brother had not even seen him for the last 8 years. i feel very betrayed.

You shouldn't, if you did it out of love and respect or moral obligation to one's parents, then it doesn't matter how much the inheritance is, if any. Your father probably thought if he didn't tangle more inheritance money you might abandon him also, which is probably why you really feel betrayed, untrusted. I've been helping my parents in old age also, I expect they may hate me by the end and there will be nothing. They are small minded people, but I owe them some help.
