Surviving STORM FRANCIS in a tiny campervan - Van Life Ireland

We are driving our NV200 camper around Ireland. In this episode we have breakfast on Cruit Island, we visit Maghery Bay for a walk to Crohy Tower, drive to Glencolumbkille over the scenic Glengesh Pass. We suffer a lashing from Storm Francis and then watch the flooding as the rivers burst their banks. We chicken out of the Slieve League cliffs and end up down on the beach of Fintra bay.

We weathered Francis on the opposite coast near Arklow. Love the area of Donegal you are seeing here , spent few trips looking at houses around Killybegs autumn 2019 to buy as a retirement home, settled on modern bungalow in Kilcar but there was something not right with the roads in the development unmade for several yearsand a dispute with the council and the builder so we delayed. Went up again in March this year and still unmade , then Covid happened so plans cancelled.🙁. We had to give up en route to the cliffs last year as weather was appalling, tried again in March on a lovely day, got through gates and beyond car park, almost made the top but elderly Mother in Law was with us and she became frightened! Not as scared as I was doing a million point turn on that road! 😂 So you aren't alone in not getting to Sliabh Liag😬

In Ireland folk have to pay for bin collection and there are no public bins as folk would use these. Campsites provide bins but for wild campers there must be recycling centres in the larger towns. Still going back over ur old videos here and enjoying them as if I watched the first

@@LifeistooshortCKIt always annoys me when Cushendall and the glens are missed out, it happens all the time. The fault lies with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, which is run by bigots. They deliberately don't give the Glens any publicity because it has always been a Republican area, totally at peace now, of course. Up until very recently, Cushendall wasn't even on the Tourist Board map of Northern Ireland. I am not being paranoid about it, big protests are under way, especially because of this month's big advertising campaign by the tourist board. Everywhere on the coastal route gets a few paragraphs, but, once again, there's not a dicky bird about the Glens of Antrim, a large part of the route. The blatant bigotry is now being reported in the media. Here's another example...An American relative of mine phoned the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to ask for the phone numbers of hotels and B&Bs in Cushendall. He was told that Cushendall has no hotel or B&Bs, a total lie, and was advised to go to Portrush instead. I apologise for being trite with you, I realise it's not your fault. Please read between the lines when reading tourist board information. They will also tell you how much it costs to see the National Trust run Giant's Causeway. The Causeway is and always has been free but the NT con people into thinking that the only entrance to the Causeway is through their Causeway Centre, which is just a glorified gift shop. It costs over 12 quid a ticket if you go through there. To the right of the Causeway Centre there is a little road, it goes under a little arch, and it leads straight to the Causeway. No-one can stop you using that way, it's perfectly legal, the road to the Causeway is a public right of way. You can still use the little buses down to the Causeway, which are cheap. I have saved many tourists a lot of money by giving them this information. Best wishes to you both. Come to Cushendall, you'll be amazed and I'll buy you a drink.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 4 жыл бұрын
Tom Johnston now I understand you and of course I sympathise with your thoughts on the matter. When you mentioned it I googled it and very little came up in a search which surprised me. We visited Cushendall and thats in episode 5 of the series. We also did the Causeway but didn’t pay the £12 rip off fee as we walked in along the cliffs. We also clambered over their little gate that said keep out just like dozens of other people did that day. I appreciate the troubles are supposed to be over but judging by some of the comments I get from people who hate the Brits you wouldn’t think it. Really bad things have happened over the years I get that but I didn’t do any of them. We enjoyed our time in Northern Ireland and I am glad to have contributed some films to what its like to use a camper van there. Some people were amazed we even visited Northern Ireland but I would recommend it to anyone. I have a simple policy on comments, abusive ones get banned and deleted, rude ones get a rude response back. I would still have a drink with you 👍

Yet another fantastic video Ken and Carol. I am going to be so sad when you go home! The drone shots were pretty spectacular on this one. Rubbish disposal is a problem in the Republic of Ireland - or more to the point in rural parts. It's very hard to make bin lorry collection work commercially. Various schemes have been tried (i.e. buying specific bin bags to leave out for collection - which the foxes and dogs love). However it's a vicious circle. As the price of the bags goes up, people get better at recycling or alternative rubbish disposal, so the waste disposal people have to put the price up more and more to stay profitable. Consequently, a lot of people put household rubbish into public bins too - so they have gradually been removed. We have a holiday home in the Rep of Ireland but have to take all rubbish back north with us when we leave. It's a real shame the pubs are closed as you are missing out on a lot of association with locals and I know you'd love the music and the craic! They provide much needed "comfort" facilities for travellers too. Another quandary the tourist board (Bord Failte) in Ireland have regarding facilities for campers is that they can be commandeered by members of what are now known as the travelling community - formally known as gypsies. They are discouraged from using them for various reasons which I won't go into. I hope you are still enjoying the country in spite of the weather. Looking forward to 15 already! John.

Thanks John. So true it being a vicious circle with the rubbish collection which is why I favour a free at the point of disposal model. Rubbish should be a council provided service along with water and power in my view. We certainly have missed out on the social side. We have spoken with some lovely friendly people on the way around but I love your music. As for the issues with the travellers I know what you mean. 👍

As someone from the north I thank you for a lovely reply and good explanation of the lack of rubbish disposable facilities. It's surely a problem which can be overcome bearing in mind how much we appreciate tourists. I also find that the lack of decent public toilet facilities something we should deal with. They too are open to abuse but it wouldn't cost much for every town and village to employ an attendant. Lastly, I fully endorse your view at the lack of bar facilities at the moment due to Covid-19. I'm a regular and have been known to give a rendition of Danny Boy, to great applause, from Malin head to Cork.

I live in Tyrone and concur Donegal Co Council appear to have a policy of not providing bins for public use. I think you are supposed to take your rubbish home with you but thats not much good to campers. Refuse collection is private and there would be a temptation for householders to use public bins.

Derry & Strabane council in NI were recently debating banning or charging a fee to people in vehicles with southern registrations entering the council's amenity sites. They are apparently causing massive congestion at the sites as a result of the high cost of disposal in Donegal and preventing the local residents getting access to tip their own rubbish. One of the discussion points was Donegal cars turned away or charged may just fly tip the stuff before heading back home. Haven't heard the outcome.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 4 жыл бұрын
What a nightmare for both sides. They will dump it and then some poor innocent has to pay to get it removed. Charging has never worked and never will in my view. Fine if you are rich and a joke if you are poor. If the charges are then used to reward shareholders then its time to change the system.

Life is too short most towns have a wonderful rubbish/recycling centre run by the local council. Pretty much all the recycling is free (including batteries, lightbulb, old electrical & computer equipment) You might pay a small fee per large blank bag for normal rubbish. I just recently went and got rid of a load of large cardboard boxes, an old electric veg steamer, an old DVD player, batteries and lightbulbs - all for free 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 It’s worth checking each place you go.... Here’s the Galway ones website - scroll down to see what is and what isn’t accepted. www.galwaycity.ie/recycling-centre#topSearch

Life is too short oh yes I hadn’t thought of that. Sorry if I was close to where you are I could take some off your hands maybe 😞 (I’m in Dublin) It may be worth asking when you’re stopped at local convenience shops or tourist places. TBH most Irish people want to help - especially as a one off for visitors. It’s just sad but public bins tended to be abused with people regularly putting all their domestic rubbish in them 😩

Ambleton Layout the rain was really hard but the winds were only buffeting the van so I didn’t feel unsafe in our position. There were no trees around us and those would have been a concern for sure. Plenty of run off for water. The good thing with a camper is you can move fairly quickly if you need to and we would if we became concerned as I am fairly risk averse. 👍

Cruit island, pronounced "Crich". When you were at Burtonport you could have taken the ferry to Arranmore, that's the last location that I made a video series on. Glengesh pass is a super road, better on a bike. Lol. You can always watch my Slieve League video and see what you missed. The rubbish situation is terrible in Donegal, I remember when there were bins at every tourist layby, but holiday home owners were filling them once they headed back to the U.K. We used to bring back what we could. My relatives used to burn it before there were bin collections, but that's all banned now. Sharkey's waste disposal charge €6 per black bin bag and that's for a small bag. The local amenity tip is also private and only electrical goods are free. I'm surprised the country isn't full of litter. There is no council tax in Donegal, so no services. Lastly I noticed that you had parked beside those "Trolls" in Donegal town and I saw their video. At first I was sympathetic towards them, but after reading some of the many anti-Irish comments he didn't paint a very good picture of Donegal people and it was tarring all with the same brush really. The detective was also giving him the heads up that he didn't have a local residence, so no parking fine would be followed up, but he was blinkered and couldn't see that. I always believe that there are 2 sides to every story and we only witnessed one of those.

If you are looking for somewhere to park for the night near Sligo....I highly recommend The Beach Bar at Aughris Head(brilliant food and hospitality!) and the seaside town of Enniscrone as well. When you get o County Mayo...Kilcummin Strand is a brilliant cliff top parking spot...if there's no storm blowing of course! ;) Regarding bins....use the ones at petrol stations. ;) Looking forward to more videos of the Wild Atlantic Way. It's not being chicken if you think safe there's always another time to go and see something if you feel the camper rocking in a sheltered section of road it's best to stop before you hit exposed stretches. Only an idiot would proceed in a dangerous situation then not only do they put themselves in danger but others as well. You have inspired me to look at either a NV200 or it's bigger brother the El Grand as being 6.1ft I might find the NV200 a little cramped for me. I don't know the laden weight of a NV200 campervan but looking at it I think it would go over with a heavy gust. If you are thinking of doing the Scottish NC500 there's been a spate of locals throwing eggs at campervan's and slashing tyres this warning comes from one of the bigger hire companies in Scotland they are warning people to avoid the area.

Life is too short So this means that when you are in cities, there is no garbage bins on street corner to throw away your coffee cup or tissue? You are expected to bring back home everything like we do for a hike in a mountain? People must be very discipline and respectful not to just leave things laying around anywhere. Unfortunatelly, over here, we find paper cup and papers by the road side everywhere. Even in the countryside. And we do have garbage cans everywhere ☹️ thanks for teaching us about the differences in different countries.

I asked a friend in Ireland about Motorhome van travel and he said to check out this site below. I assumed they would not actually be buried there. Its interesting as in England the authorities do not allow that but you often see unofficial memorials to loved ones who have passed. The memorials are very solid structures and identical to those we have seen in graveyards. Carol reminded me today that I did actually spot the teddies as I had said to her that I was distracted by the teddies when I didn’t answer her question. I had completely forgotten that. Do people have to apply for permission to erect the memorials or is it just accepted that you can generally ?

You wont find too many public litter bins in Ireland because people are to tight to pay to get rid of their household rubbish and end up filling the public bins with as much as they can stuff in
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 4 жыл бұрын
That is certainly the case but in reality it’s just a symptom of the real problem, those in charge are failing to provide a basic service in dealing with the rubbish. If you can’t afford to pay it’s going to get dumped. 😏

@@LifeistooshortCK Not sure i entirely agree. Higher refuse prices force people to think about the waste they are producing, and anybody with any sense will try to save money by cutting back/recycle etc so it's a win/win afaic. It would be a boring world if we all agreed Dave. Its being able to disagree in a polite fashion thats a rapidly disappearing skill these days I fear 👍. I always like to take things back to the root cause where possible. It starts with all the excess packaging, made worse by the development of a use once and throw away business model and then the privatisation of public services that should not be about profit but providing a good service to all. That is the best way to protect the environment as there is no need to be selfish or fly tip. I imagine there is no chance of going back to that model as there are now too many vested interests. 👍

@@LifeistooshortCK The downside of capitalism😢. However, businesses only flourish if they give the consumer what they want. Look out for signs for the local amenity centre. You can get rid of your rubbish there. As for your neighbours. I watched the video. The wardens were acting like wardens. The Gard was giving them a way out. I've lived here 13 years and never been targeted for being a 'Brit' but I don't try to film the Gardai and get snotty. I've always found that the Gards have been very fair. It is a shame their video has attracted a few Ireland bashers.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip regarding the amenity centre. Filming officials certainly winds them up without a doubt but I am not aware of any legislation that makes it illegal. If there was I think Danny might have been experiencing the results of it. I can’t be certain of the laws in Ireland but I am aware of them in the UK and our police, wardens nurses etc get filmed all the time these days and to most its water of a ducks back. Its not my job to defend Danny’s parking decisions but I witnessed the Irish van being asked to move and two British vans getting tickets. I also spoke with the Irish couple who were asked to move. That carpark is a nightmare for campers.
@BrokenBackMountains
@BrokenBackMountains 4 жыл бұрын
@@LifeistooshortCK The wardens were completely out of order and shouldn't be in that job. It is the first time I've ever seen more than one. I believe anyone has the right to refuse to be filmed or photographed here out of privacy laws. I'm very conscious of that when doing street photography here in Ireland. When I am in a foreign country I usually prefer not to rile the local police and I think that people sometimes forget that Ireland is a separate country. There is an increasing demand that an Aire system gets introduced. Ireland is pretty unique in that we lose lay-bys and parking spots due to the travelling fraternity. A lot of councils and landowners will erect height restrictions, put boulders across entrances or dump gravel in lay-bys. Luckily the wee red van can get round most of that. It is a shame that two ignorant jobsworths mean that all Donegal gets branded. At the end of the day, if you are not resident in the Republic you can walk away from tickets.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK 4 жыл бұрын
Wardens have a difficult job to do and must be able to handle conflict even better than a police officer because they don’t have the powers to deal with it the way a police officer can. The law with regards to filming is a mess particularly when we take into consideration how many times we are all filmed every day when we enter shops, walk past premises etc. The police wear body cameras to film us when needed (no idea if Ireland have them yet) and I believe Danny played a powerful card when he pointed out his film was his evidence for a potential defence. Public officials should be used to being filmed these days and most importantly not threaten any course of action unless there is an actual law and power to back that threat up. Its the first thing you learn as a newbie on the job. I have never seen wardens acting in a pair or operate in that fashion. From what I saw they made a bee line for the campers and I suspect that might be a daily occurrence. Of course what happened cannot be a reflection on the town as a whole but we stayed the night in that car park and kids were racing up and down for ages by the motorhomes sounding their horns continuously. I am talking of them parking alongside you and just holding the horn on. If the town wants campers business it needs to sort out that car park because I would certainly tell people to give it a miss at the moment and thats not fair on the town. 👍

@@LifeistooshortCK Thanks for clarifying things. There is a problem with boy racers in a lot of towns unfortunately. I often see doughnuts on country roads. There are quite a few places where I wouldn't park up as well. There is also a history of break ins in a lot of popular areas. I don't leave my car in a lot of Wicklow car parks overnight if I am heading into the hills for a few nights camping. If you see a sign warning not to leave valuables and a lot of auto glass scattered around then. Anyway, if you are heading through Co Kildare, I can sort your rubbish problem for ya 😉
