Thank you, Kelly. Exactly what I was looking for after worrying all day about the right-hand edge of the table runner I’m weaving. There are maybe four looser warps on the right edge, and I don’t know what I’ve done wrong. Also, I have to use a comb after every pick because of the 1/8” gap left between the wefts. I’m using an 8/4 cotton warp on a 10 dent. Could this be the reason I cannot “beat” the weft yarn closer?

Uneven tension can be a problem for beating. Another solution to your 4 looser threads could be to weight them over the back of the loom. I use "S" hooks for this, just hook it onto the problem thread behind the back beam/roller to give that extra bit of tension they may need.

Kelly Casanova Thanks, Kelly. The S hooks (plus a few washers hung onto the S hooks for extra weight) helped me finish the table runner nicely. I definitely need to revisit the process of tying on the warp which, for this project, created very uneven tension. 😢

dang! i wish i had watched this a week ago! i knew about the fishing line and just used it on a (really beautiful!) wedding gift, but i didn't put the line in with the last thread, i put it next to it, and taking it out is making the edges wonky. And i used line that was too thick as well. Dang! Any notions how to fix that? i figure i'll take a weft thread through each loop? Thank you Kelly, for all your wonderful teachings and sharings. You are greatly appreciated, and i learn a lot. Really helpful about the edges, too!

Keep in mind that the edges will shrink a little and improve after wet finishing. If the loops at the edges are really large I'm not sure if you could fix that.

@@KellyCasanova I already wet-finished the sample, including very hot water for over 1/2 hour, and mostly air drying, then finishing in dryer, and then steam ironing. Better but not fine. I used 5/2 mercerized cotton from lunatic fringe. I think I'll probably have to sort of sew the edges. Darn! I'm still a fairly new weaver, about two years now, and still have a lifetime of learning to accomplish! I am so grateful to be learning this awesome craft. Again so very grateful for all you share.

When do you use this wonderful technique? & when do you decide not to use it? I'm making my very first 12" tea towel, using your weaving school video & finished my first cloth. I've noticed this right side selvedge problem. I'm just beginning the 2nd tea towel & will try using this fishing line to remedy the loose edge.

I'm taking your Woe To Go class and have started over more times than I can remember. :) I'm happy with my left selvedge in the down shed (left to right) but my right selvedge in the up shed (right to left) is I'll say mixed! How heavy is the S hook? Between my sewing and beading supplies and the "stuff" my husband has in the basement we're bound to have something of similar weight.

I was wondering if that outside salvage edge on your right is loose because of the way you were beating the weft? You sort of wiggled it instead of beating up and down.

I often wiggle 😆 It's looser on the right because the thread is in a slot rather than a hole 😊

It’s interesting to me that you put your color into the warp and weave with a single color. Like the rainbow warp and black wedt of another video of yours. Is that called something specific? It’s very nice.

It seems me that thing the line onto that bar on your loom will cause problems when wind onto the cloth beam. Am I wrong about that?

Hi Kelly. When weaving I do the opposite of you. When I pick from the left I am in low heddle position. Would I put the line on the left side or keep it on the right?

Yes Barbara, swap sides. Whichever side is loose and giving you trouble. You can use the fishing line one both sides if you wish.

You can still use the technique, just make sure the weft thread wraps around the fishing line at each edge.

All your threads in the down sheed are looser then the upper ones. Why? I had the same problem with my little loom.

It's very common when using a rigid heddle loom, you can't get the same tension that you can on a floor loom, particularly with 8/2 cotton. It's not usually an issue for the finished woven piece, you just need to be a bit more careful when weaving not to snag the looser threads.
