The cage is actually a room in the mansion, it's where fear kept him but he buries fear...so I think he still uses the cage to escape fame, exposure, mass appeal and judgement etc...he let's fans in but he picks and chooses when.

My thoughts are that he thought he was alone with his thoughts but has realized that the fans are just like him and understand what he is going through. I myself have OCD, ADHD.

He is the Outcast in how he thinks, in his upbringing, and in the industry. He is told to smile more by his producers and managers often. So he metaphorically paints a "smile" on his face as a symbolic facade if him putting on a show and acting happy when he's going through mental health struggles daily. His music let's his fans into the mansion or cage in his mind. They all paint their smiles on too, because they are also going through similar struggles that are relatable and he let them in by releasing the music if his life. We're along for the ride as fans and we're in his head some, because he has shined a brilliant light on himself and his struggles.

The cage is more like his shell, and he doesn't want to get out of his shell. Eventually leaves it to go on The Search, but still carries a portable shell (the trolly) to escape to during the search.

I think the cage is like a different type of mansion. Hes become brave enough to leave that mansion but still not ready to be completely exposed. You can see him now but cant really reach him but people can touch him if they try hard enough. As time goes on you will see a different version of the cage....

Fun fact these were real fans in the video. It's one of 4 videos he's invited fans to be in. Yes that is his fake smile. What he is saying in this video is he was inside the cage with the fans are watching there outside trying to get a piece of him then he would let one or two fans at a time to take a picture which means he's letting them into his life into his head which is what the cage represents his mind. But by the end he invited all his fans to be inside of his head because that's what he cares about those are the ones he trusts the fans. This is absolutely a shot to the industry like you said at the end Industries trying to ignore him but this album ended up causing him to have massive success beyond anything he could have thought. What you would think is a great thing? But as you will see in the next album that's not exactly how it went for him. Heads up he posted a picture on Instagram today and KZbin and Facebook which usually means something's coming very soon. Hope you can catch up to the search before she drops it.

For perfection nate was going through a lot with the pressure from the fans, label (here he already made his own but needed to finish his contract first), touring put a big toll on him.. once you get to the search you gonna learn more since he address it there cause he took a year off from music cause all of the things mentioned before
