You can fine tune it by adding weights (old brake drums, etc.) if you extend the diagonal past your hinge pole and just hang the weights on it. Helps to offset the weight hanging and makes it easier to open and close. Still no hinges needed. Nice ground for digging. The glaciers were kind to you.

Indeed they were! I certainly thought about that style of gate, but ultimately didn’t like the aesthetics of the counterweight. I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Just found your Episode "Best Cabin Subfloor Idea You’ve NEVER Seen. Joists, Insulation, & OSB" and your channel "Life on The Moose" and I love it. Subscribed already and I am binge watching your epidodes. I've never seen that type of gate before so was watching and taking notes and it makes sooo much sense out in an environment like that. What a genius idea! ! ! I'm 70yo, disabled now and a full time care giver for my wife as well, so my dreams of a cabin in the mountains or plains like you have are long gone. However, before my brother died [2016] he and I built my 16x24 foot wood working shop together. It is the one thing I am truly proud of having built and made. I never could have done it without his expertise, he was a master carpenter and lead on everything but the concrete pad and electrical system which I did. I miss building things and would have dearly loved to have build a cabin like yours. Keep up the great work and I will live my dream vicariously through your fine efforts. Brian

That hinge is really clever. One good tip deserves another - wood is generally stiffer/stronger in compression than in tension. So for the next one you build, put the support brace in the other direction (lowest part closest to the hinge, highest part out where you would latch it if it had a latch.) It will be less likely to sag that way. And if it does eventually start to sag, reversing the brace orientation will likely fix it without having to add any additional structure. Happy building!
@LifeontheMoose

Thanks! Not an engineer, but I believe the weight of the long vertical would literally outweigh any benefit of reversing the diagonal. Appreciate you watching! 🙏

Well....not being a carpenter or anything, I had NO idea how the heck that gate was going to work...until the very end. Ingenious! It is neat to know how folks did things "back in the day" when they didn't have access to the stuff we do today and just used their noggins to figure out how to do stuff with the materials at hand. Thanks for showing us how to make a hinge-less gate!!

Hopefully you did a better job of compacting it than road construction is done today. Really like your gate, here’s an idea take some 1” wide strips of leather 18”-24” long. Soak them in water for about an hour. Then wrap around the joint of the gate. When they dry out they will shrink and make the joints even stronger/tighter.

Nice build. I spent time as a kid on a horse ranch in Colorado. They used these gates. I believe your diagonal goes the wrong way, however. It should be under compression, not tension. For a tension diagonal, use a rod & turnbuckle.

I have an off grid little cabin in NH and I’m trying to figure out basic ways of doing things. Your videos are easy to understand and offer practical ways of doing things. I have a driveway going up a hill and trucks keep leaving their trailers at the entrance so I know I have to put up some kind of barrier. This would be a great idea for the driveway but I know it would be too hard for me. Maybe I’ll just have a truck load of gravel dumped there and use another entrance. @@LifeontheMoose
