Looking at some of the other puncture tests that people have done on LFP batteries, I wouldn't be surprised if the smoke coming out of it if flammable but the battery isn't getting hot enough to ignite it.

In a non ventilated room aren't those gasses toxic oxygen or explosive? When you say nothing happened that could mislead someone. I mean, you demonstrated only one type of failure. There's also thermal failure from internal components or externally caused. Electrical shorts can cause the battery to overheat to the point of failure. Chemical, mechanical, etc.

It would be interesting to see if you took two of those LiPO batteries and drilled through one while having an adjoining battery next to it to see if the heat given off during its combustion process would somehow trigger a reaction in the second battery that was not drilled through sort of like puncturing it when it's still in its stack.

Very useful and informative video. Side note, the fumes from the electrolyte is very toxic, don't breath it. Since the chemistry does not produce its own oxygen it requires an external source to ignite, but it will burn. Due to the flat voltage curve, the cycle life and the better safety, LFP is usually the best choice. Lithium Titanate is also a good choice, but the voltage curve makes it harder to work with. I am very appreciative of your video to help your audience make a more informed decision about battery chemistry, you reach a large audience, so it really helps. BTW, happy birthday!

At least some of the electrolytes are fluorinated organic compounds. Inhaling the smoke from a burning battery could create hydrofluoric acid inside one's lungs when the decomposition products react with the water on mucous membranes. Needless to say this is extremely bad when even modest concentrations are reached.

@@wombatillo yeah and the widespread opinion i gleaned from my time on the ebikes discord (a few folks there make their own DIY batteries for their DIY ebikes) is that although LFP is much safer when it comes to thermal runaway and fire hazard type events, you actually seem to get more smoke come out of them, so potentially more toxic HF acid. so on that level they'd be no less lethal if you kept them in your living space if it's at all cramped than the more explosive battery chemistries. whereas LTO videos i've watched seem to suggest that the only respiratory hazards that get emitted when things go wrong at CO2, hydrogen and trace amounts of CO. but i don't know how rigorous their testing setup for verifying that was since you can only show so much in a video, so all i saw was the cells getting torture tested without going crazy or on fire or anything. i dont know what kind of electrolyte the LTO cells use either, or even if it's the same for all LTO batteries

@@doooofus basically you need to test every battery from a hundred to analyze how hazardous are the fumes. (even the same batteries from the same manufacturer might change chemistry rapidly because the rate of development is very fast in this industry)

Happy B-day! My Bluetti AC Power MAX gassed out exactly as your demonstration! I was in my RV, and my 1000 watt panel was charging her up in the early morning sun. Then suddenly I heard a hissing sound! What is that? Then gaseous fumes billowed out of the solar generator and I dashed out of the RV. Imagine if that was a Lithium Ion? I would have lost my RV! Bluetti promptly replaced my failed unit. Great customer service, but you have to buy direct from the company. Returning a defective unit via Amazon purchase can be problematic.

I know electric vehicle car manufacturers go through a lot of trouble to protect the batteries, but I think they are using chemistries that can create thermal runaway. Not having gasoline is a help, but in a severe collision I could still see the battery being punctured.

Will, Being that the new Chins battery that you opened was definitely not Solid State batteries I would be very interested to see you do a drill test on the Chins LiFePO4 battery just to make sure they aren’t mislabeling them as well. They might be dangerous LiPo batteries, who knows.

All LiFeSO4 come from china. The two biggest LFP battery manufacturers for automotive use are BYD and CATL both Chinese.

Now that the smoke has cleared, do you consider EcoFlow, Jackery and older Bluetti portable power stations based on NMC batteries to be a fire hazard? But the danger could be in the too thight packed battery cells, they expand have nowhere to go and explode get on fire and so on. Is there an different in the different battery types. Is the Vapor cloud from an LFP cell any less flammable than from regular NCM cells? Fire directly from the compromised cells is an issue, but flammable gasses can be a much larger concern if trapped inside a building.

glad you wore pants. I burned my leg once pounding a screwdriver through a large RC lipo pack and it instantly lit on fire the moment the screwdriver pierced the first cell, sprayed fire at my leg like a blowtorch.

What was the charge state before you drilled it? Is the outgasing flammable? Is the outgassing toxic? 1 blade in the open air isn't really the same as it happening in an an enclosed space with other cells connected to a load.

will ,there is a person or entity called Engineer 775 He talks about going solar without an inverter. I too think I would like to head that direction on my system as an inverter seems to be the single most expensive item on going solar and using the panels ,batteries ,wiring ,charge controllers, and inverters. I have watched your stuff and would prefer you sum this up. I am a licensed electrician since the early eighties....know a lot about electrical ,the procedures and materials concerning electrical ,but my knowledge of dc is working on car issues or aa ,aaa,and other battery issues . what do you think. how do I contact you other than the way I am doing it. I do not own a current NEC code book,but I would bet one if it could be beneficial such as sizing conductors based on load etc and conduit sizing .....

Cold weather applications are really the only advantage. LTO would be good for energy storage in outdoor sub artic temperatures. I believe it's used on Antarctic expeditions for running electrical devices where generators would fail do to it being so cold.

Would you consider intentionally damaging a lifepo4 battery assembly inside of its carton and or overcharge a pack? BMS is a layer of protection but they too can have dangerous undetected failures.
