Ought to be a Gold Hammer online trophy for nailing it. I get up super early in the morning to watch a couple of videos during breakfast to start the day. Yours is a great way to start the day. Not just what you're doing, but your attitude is top notch!!! You're not only designing, building cool stuff, you are also doing what more of us (well me at least) should remember to do...free thinking. Many would dig their heel in and stick with what they put together but you didn't...you were wise enough to stop & look at what others were thinking & you went free thinking again. Plan, Act, Review & if need be...repeat rinse. Will you make mistakes? Yes, you are human but you're well ahead of the pack cos your planning is unhindered free thinking & your pride only rolls up & goes into building the project. Keep on keeping sir, well played...VERY well played.

To solve the sheet metal access, put a heavy duty hinge at the bracket by the window, that way you can swing those out of the way to access the metal... or build a rolling rack to hold the sheet metal that you can wheel it out to get any piece you want when the other tools are swung out of the way.

I love it when a plan comes together. Nice execution! I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of these in garages across the USA. If you get more tools you could probably add a lower level to the rack, and maybe angle the lower level receivers out for easy access. Just a thought.

A great use of space would be to add another 6’ horizontal to your rack, half way down the bracket that are hitched to the wall. Then add horizontal receiver to it and add another row of tools below. So they stick out from the wall sideways. Underneath the other tools. Great content! Thanks

A long time ago when I worked out of my shed, I built a rolling sheet metal rack. It was not so different from a lumber cart from the big box store (which didn't even exist back then) but it had an interesting feature. In addition to the fixed back rail that held the sheets up, there was a pivoting front rail that was retained by a chain, so that you could lean the sheets forward without having to hold them up yourself, and flip through them like the pages in a book to find the one you needed. It was fantastic. You could unhook the chain to fold the front rail right down for loading as required, and with half the stack folded forward there was MUCH less friction on the sheet you were trying to slide out. Now, a rolling rack might not be perfect for your application, but imagine that you had one with wheels on one end. You have a pivot at the end of the tool rack you just made, and your sheet metal 'cart' is up against the wall out of the way, but when needed you can roll the far end away from the wall to avoid the shelving and slide sheets out of that far end. After you have your sheet you pivot it back against the wall out of the way. It's just a thought. I just found your channel randomly this morning, and this is the first one of your videos that I have seen, but so far I'm finding it entertaining... in a good way. :)

I like the way this is coming along but the “garage space-saving efforts” are a never ending beast. One good idea can effect the whole rest of the garage layout and workflow, especially because you never know what next tool you “must have.” To solve your dilemma with the sheet metal you may have to rethink that whole wall of storage. Good luck and keep the videos coming! I’m actually loving this stuff!

Great way to use viewer suggestions! I would mention that if the setscrew tabs were extended a bit below the bottom of the rack tube, the tips of the setscrews could be conical (you can buy cone point) and when tightened, the side of the cone would contact the bottom corner of the tube, pulling the receiver down, and preventing it from tipping. This would still allow the screws to be backed out and the receivers could be lifted up and off. Just found your channel today and subscribed!

Thank you for these videos. For your sheet metal storage you could allow the sheets to slide behind the tool rack if you bring the part up higher where it would mount to the wall so it would be just above that 4 foot mark. Then mount the bottom and to the concrete. Maybe weld some tabs and drill then add some anchor bolts. And of course, make the vertical post set away from the wall just enough to fit sheet metal behind it

Use the same wall brackets and mount on wall above the sheets , come out a foot or so then drop down to the height you have now. You nearly had it when you said you could undersling them. That way the sheets can slide out easily and the dead space above them is utilized. Ideas from a fellow tinkerer in little ol new zealand. 👌

Great plan B. 👍 Cut the hex wrench at the bend and weld into a T. Is it possible to have another floor pocket so you can use two tools at the same time? Another good idea would be a jib crane style tool holder. Swings out to use tools or put sheet goods up. Or a post that the horizontal tool holder can roll across the post top. You could then pivot and pull tools outside.

Perhaps now modify your ‘rolling receiver’ to become a sheet metal rack. That way it could tuck behind the end of the new wall-mounted bracket till needed, then roll out for sheet(s) to be removed or replaced. That would need floor clearance at the end of the tool rack though. Love the continual thinking. ‘Keep moving forward’! Les in UK 🇬🇧

Love the vids even though I do mostly wood working. I’ve made a few receivers with shelves on them to clamp misc tools, jigs and vises to different benches or 2” tow hitch on my truck. Having to clamp each tool down takes a minute or two, I might try your more permanent base for attachments. Nice bicycle racks for receiver hitches use different systems to take out the wiggle of the rack in the receiver. Saris essentially uses a nut inside their rack (the male of the system) and a threaded hitch pin to pull the rack tight to one wall of the tow hitch (obviously the female part of the system). Kuat uses a ball/cam to take out the slop. Tough to explain but it might help take out some wiggle at the base for the post mount. Another for tightening up the tool to post mount up top, if a more simple threaded set screw doesn’t take care of it.

In hindsight, I would suggest dropping the set screw idea all together and instead, have made the set screw tabs extend just far enough below the rack to insert a locking clevis pin through the tabs, but under the rack. Thereby, you can slide the tools on the rack as needed, no set screws to fiddle with, and a real pin, not just a snug one sided set screw preventing top heavy tool rotation issues. Plus you can add or remove tool bases quickly and easily, as desired, and there are no holes required through the rack, as the clevis pin just clears the bottom of the rack. Both videos were great, so glad to see you back in the shop.

V2.6 Idea: Burn another square tube across at the base of your 45* supports (attached to the 45s). Then you can have a second row of tool heads tucked in beneath, sticking out at 45* and cut off the upper tool bar at the left wall bracket. You'll increase tool capacity & wall space for sheet goods AND retain floor space below tool heads. Hope this makes sense, I struggled with how to word this despite the idea being simple. Great idea! I know that I would get tired of swapping tools to do a job, perhaps a dare I say, a second floor receiver ......................... is needed? I know I want to see how it was done ;) so there is that.

Yes sir! There will be times when two or more tools might be needed. Metal shaping for example. I can imagine bouncing around between the Beverly shear, a sand bag, and the Shrinker/stretcher. 😩

Hey guys in my next video I’m going to turn this tool stand vertical and save even more space by mounting it to the ceiling and floor. What a great idea.

Oh boy. Funny how these projects can spiral. Definitely a case where one idea effects the whole rest of the garage. I have the same issue. Before you know it he’ll only be doing “garage space saving ideas” videos 😂

This would work great with a receiver on the corner of a work bench too

Glue a magnet to the Allen key to hold it on the tool rack. I've been wanting to move my vice and grinder to a receiver and planned a workbench with both vertical and horizontal receiver mounts that I can expand upon as time goes. Too many projects backed up to build it now but that to see someone else thinking the same way and it working as well as envisioned

My worthless 2 cents = mount the receivers horizontally pointing out (still slidable left-right), mount the tools on an extended 2x2 ( length dependent on each tool) with the set screw (or pin) still at the receiver. Mount a surge protector in a convenient place on the rack with each tool plugged in. Then when you need one for a quick job, you slide it out for a little working clearance, snug it down, turn it on and have at it. Job done, slide it back in. It's still removable for placing on a pedestal, etc. Like your working style. Best of luck. John

I’d build one of those hitches for that cold cut saw you’re using on the ground lol then you can use what’s left from that rolling stand to make a rolling stand to support long material when you need to cut it on the cold cut saw on its new stand.

I considered putting the saw on a post. I still might! I’ll be adding another receiver on the edge of my workbench. Maybe I’d use it there. I certainly don’t want to fling hot chunks of metal at my wife’s truck where the original hole is!

Idea: Use the cart for the sheet metal storage so you can pull it away from the wall and again have easy access to it.

Hey Bro... I Enjoy Your Channel. That said... I was thinkin' that 4x8 sheets can be stacked standing up too. That way... you could have the best of both worlds... ie: an 8' long tool rack and you wouldn't have to wrestle them out. Jus' sayin'... the ceiling looks high enough and it doesn't look like you're using the window.

Awesome video series. For the common tool post... Seems like it rocks back and forth a bit. I would slot cut the bottom lengthwise and weld in a very gradual tapered plate to wedge against the female hole in the floor. The goal being that the post bottoms out on the wedge, not the bottom of the hole. I'll be watching to see if this idea makes the final cut! Pun intended

If not that specifically, something similar! I’ve been kicking around a couple ideas. Maybe I’ll do a short video with a bunch of tests since some are over-complicated just the way I like it, and some are stupid simple!

I hoard steel also.. I have 5 gallon buckets of drops and scraps. Separate buckets for triangles, square tube, angle iron, pipe and tube, round rod, circle drops left over from hole sawing or torching out holes, and ironworker punch slugs... Outside I have salvaged enough I- beam to add on a 35 × 100 ft addition to my shop.. I don't haul any to the scrap yard unless its total crap. I also save brass...mostly plumbing brass to melt in my foundry furnace to cast special custom car parts to be chromed.

Maybe store the stheet metal on the rolling rack? Build a sliding drawer/shelf under the wall tool rack to hold that portable cutoff saw that you're using on the ground - the shelf could be a work surface when the work stock would fit.

Use the rolling base to make a sheet metal rack. Roll it away from the wall when you need to drag a sheet out.

Great job! if you make your common receiver two pieces with one sliding into the other, you could make it height adjustable with a pin/bolt. Might help with different tool heights, or if you work with different height buddies some time. Might add too much slop though.
@GarageFab

Consider that idea stored in my mind for later. My Shrinker/Stretcher is a very tall tool so it’s awkwardly high right now. If I shrink the post all the other tools would be awkwardly low. 😆 This would work nicely!
@GRid-yk2ru
@GRid-yk2ru 11 ай бұрын
@@GarageFabdidn't you just end up with more than a few left over chunks of 2x2 posts? Lol Maybe certain tools need a specific height post, still way more compact than the rolling rack. Great job!

Why wouldnt you put the sheet metal closer to the door and the tools further in the back? Love your content bro, really brings back to working out of a garage again.
@GarageFab
@GarageFab 11 ай бұрын
I don’t really have a good answer for that. 😆 I can tell you what I was thinking originally; The bender particularly is heavy and awkward and I wanted to walk with it the least amount possible. When there’s a vehicle in the garage, there’s not much room to walk near the back wall. my wife’s truck, is fully painted so I cringe thinking about moving the bender around the back of the truck. Having the metal by the door certainly would be nice though!

The rolling part of your old rack could be used to hold the metal. You then could roll it out for the large sheets.
