I'm a big African Violet person. Pop them into a self-watering pot and forget about them for weeks on end. If you fertilize constantly (with liquid in the water) they'll bloom basically year-round. Mine have gone through months of neglect and bounced back beautifully. Mine live in a cabinet with plants with thrips and they just don't care!! They're a perfect low maintenance flowering plant that is generally impossible to kill in the self-watering set-up. They're also super cheap in the grocery store!! ♥

I am a Bonsai enthusiast and have s few great trees. I just bought a Italian Stone Pine and when I got it home the soil was power dry so I soaked it for a few hours. I called the place I bought it from and asked them to water what was left in their store. I have my grandmothers Christmas cactus from the 70's and I take real good care of this ancient relic from my youth. Good video, most people see a plant and buy it without knowing too much about it. Let your video be a guide!

I do alright with Calathea/prayer plants (they keep changing the genus names on these). The secret is aquarium water conditioner to get rid of the chlorine in water and regular watering... preferably in a self-watering type planter.

Yes! API tap water conditioner!! I don’t even want to drink my tap water! I start with using a Brita filter to fill a 1 gallon bottle & add 4 to 5 drops of conditioner. I have had my calathea for 11 months and it has almost doubled in size and just keeps sprouting new leaves! I have snipped only about 5 leaves from the bottom over the time it came home, but that seems normal. It also sits on a glass bowl filled with pebbles & water for added humidity. I love mine so much that I gave one to my neighbor at Christmas. Her’s flowered this summer…. I’m a little envious! 😊

Thanks for sharing your experience with these plants, I love all of them. Unfortunately, all of them don’t love me and don’t want me to be their mommy. I seen a plant in the Home Depot that you did not mention. I was hoping you could tell me the name and any information on it. It was when you were speaking about it is at 8:40 ish right before you talk about the peace lily. I saw a very white fairly large leaf plant that I want to see if it wants to live with me. Please let me know if you can. Thanks so much for your wonderful videos!❤

Yes, this was very helpful indeed. I'm good with plants and can figure out most of them (eventually) but your video is a great reminder of plants we SHOULDN'T get as a present for someone who's less experienced, or even for ourselves if we're buying for tricky spots like an office building that turns the lights and AC/heating off during weekends. A plant that has died in my care more times than I wish to admit: Stingray Alocasia. Oh, how I love those leaves! No matter what I do, it eventually succumbs to rot or spider mites.

When I was at Lowe's a couple months ago, I bought a purple waffle and a moth orchid (my very first orchid) from a clearance rack, since I needed more diversity on my new plant furniture than just pothos. Luckily, both plants have been doing quite well. The orchid, which previously lost all its flowers before I got it, is now about to bloom two new ones (I now know what color they'll be). As for my purple waffle, I ended up with six plants instead of one, which I discovered while re-potting them the first time. I know it's dumb luck but whenever I return to Lowe's, I'll return to that clearance rack to see what other small indoor plant needs a new home. I am especially interested in one of those tinier plants like the ones shown here.

You started out with my absolute favourite: ivy. there are so many different kinds and they are all so beautiful. I just love how delicate they look. Unfortunately, I could never get them through the winter. No matter what I tried they never made it. The spider mites are such a pain to get rid off. The only place where ivy might stand a chance is probably in a bathroom where they might get enough humidity. Now I keep some on my balcony instead and I got a beautiful pothos for my living room... and after watching this video I really want a scindapsus. They are stunning and they're easy to take care of? I hope I'll be able to find one at some point

I just pitched all four of my English Ivy varieties yesterday. Despite treating them all summer for mites, and thinking I had eradicated them, there they were.... Just not worth the hassle. I do have alocasias and calatheas and P. Gloriosum that the spider mites love, but the leaves are larger and fewer so it's easier to catch and treat them on those. I struggle with Rex begonias (some of them). I managed to get some thrips from a big box store and they found my African Violet pollen irresistable, so I've gone through a lot of misery spraying them and disbudding them. Hope I got them all! Anyway, this was a fun diversion (what NOT to buy)! Thanks

Now they are in one of my little self watering pots. They have definitely got some roots. So maybe I'm about to be successful with it. 😊 another plant i don't want again is the "ginger" plant and some shops call it a calathea. That has to be the most difficult plant ever. Ferns- Asparagus ferns are pretty tolerant. They do react to drought but it is simply a matter of clipping off the yellow and it will get back on track easily. They seem delicate but aren't. In my experience. Alocasias- dust regularly and pests can be kept at bay. Bonus is harvesting corms and making new plants, which is great if mother plant is pesty.

We find that certain plants with those cylinders in the soil seem to hold the plant back from its true growth potential. Almost like they're strangling the roots. Any suggestions you can offer.

Regular potting mix. I had one for years after my aunt gave me cuttings. She had it for 40+ years! I putted it in shallow large pot and keep it cool and watered once a month. Almost dry in winter. When it got leggy I rooted cuttings in water. They do have wide root systems and like moderate conditions.

@Perivale I've got hundreds of tropical and indoor plants I grow everything from scratch and they aclimate to your conditions much better, spider mite is a never ending dance you will never be truly rid of them,I keep them at bay buy regular washing leaves and stems with a mixture of neem oil horticultural soap and water. It is alot of work but worth it. Same as fungus nat lol it's a delicate dance keeping the balance lol

My theory on why certain plants are more spider mite prone. Is for example alocasia in the wild live in wet humid environments, basically not conditions where spider mites would live. Because of that they have never evolved over 1000s of years to deal with spider mites (if that makes sence) I think in 1000 years time if people are still growing Alocasia in a home environment, (from many generations of corm from other home growns, not wild) then they would evolve more anti spider mite. Just an idea I come up with over the years.

Hi Ashley, I am into anthuriums now, but also have philodendrons. Just few😮 I do have ferns plants and the worst is keeping with moisture and I ended up killing few 😢 have few different pothos but now I’m tired of them. Crotons? I kill them too, together with the aglionemas; but I’ve been able to keep alive more than 1000s on my collection! I have succulents & cactus 🌵 and to say the truth this year I did better with them. Praying plants? There are many different colors & I wish I could give a try, I like easy & less dramatic 🪴 plants 🌱 I love syngoniums & Hoyas. I have also few, and also different kind of spider plants and African violets 😊 one time in one of your videos told us not to buy very small plants, but I had already done it & I struggled to make them grow & finally died, it was a huge waste of time & money! Tell me, I heard not to repot ZZ plants after we buy them, I heard they love being close tightly together 😊 I enjoy your videos Ashley and I wish I could start my work out again ❤ you look amazing ❤❤❤👍

6:47 ferns are the bane of my existence. I have had 3 different ferns before my birds nest fern, Boston, Maiden’s Hair, and a Rabbit’s Foot, and they just all died. I’m too much of an underwaterer to keep them alive. My Bird’s nest fern is hanging in there, though, they are WAY easier to handle.

Bonjour Ashley, Is there mom and pop's plant store you could show us. I enjoy watching the big box finds but "meeting" smaller store could be nice. Yes prices will be a bit more, the service and attention will also be better. I live in Italy and go to family own nurseries. I think that buying is voting, I am buying from people that put all of there energy into there dream. Ciao

Spider mites like heat and stagnant air. If you can keep air moving around a plant, it will not get spider mites, in my experience. Bird's nest fern attracts mealy bugs like crazy. They often come pre-loaded with mealy from the big box store!

Crotons and ferns are best used potted outdoors, in a shady spot and watered frequently. I have used them that way for decades with great success, but neither one will thrive indoors.
