Patient education is in my opinion, one of the best things a patient can obtain throughout their PT journey. It equips them with knowledge, understanding, and control to help themselves to make them feel better

I start my first clinical internship in acute inpatient setting in september. Im curious about your most difficult experiences, some of the most important lessons you have learned while in the setting and overall tips that you may have for students who are about to go through this journey. Geane Valdez wooohooo lets see if you like it! It’s not for everyone, but inpatient acute rehab definitely grew on me and I wouldn’t mind working there today. great questions!!!! Let me think.. I would say learning how the system works was really challenging to me. Like how much PT is necessary - you want to help them get better and literally get them back to function, but the role of an acute care PT is to have them independent enough to function with ADLs at home. Basically walking, sit to stand, bed mobility, and stairs. I learned that it is extremely important to work as a team with other healthcare professionals when treating patients. The more that you are cordial and kind to others, the better your experience. You help them, they help you. Lastly I would add that you go into this rotation with an open heart. The patients that you are going to see are in a very vulnerable place and you are literally one of the very few healthcare workers in that hospital setting that are going to give them hope and encouragement to remind them that they will be OK. I would say you and nurses and occupational therapists are the only ones that are going to spend a decent amount of time with these patients so you have the biggest impact! Utilize that to inspire and to thrust them to a new level of motivation. Once you get used to the setting, it can get easy to just go through the motions, but remind yourself daily that the patients you are seeing literally do not know anything and even just the smallest advice can make the hugest impact for them! You have a lot of authority and power in the hospital. Use it to uplift others!! LIFT FOR CHANGE!

At first, it could put a sour taste in your mouth, considering the duties and how everything works, but honestly.. after I did my rotation at an acute rehab inpatient setting, I wouldn't mind working there full time!! Its a different perspective from your typical physical therapy that most people have. Which PT program are you at?

@@drjustinleedpt ATSU in Arizona, I guess I'm the typical jock/ex personal trainer going into pt school who's a sucker for ortho. Don't get me wrong I've exposed myself to 6 different settings in my undergrad including an acute rehab unit, just felt like more of a nursing job at that point; was also not a fan of everyday views/odors on the job.

They do not HAVE TO but they can definitely use it as a form of treatment

Are you expected to know every single muscle before PT school or are they more lenient?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Once your start PT school, you will re-learn every muscle, bone, nerve, artery, and more. but before starting, you are not expected to study and prepare at all! Honestly acute care pt would be a dream for me. Is the inpatient job market saturated? Or is it relatively easy to get a position?

Gio Acevedo Inpatient job market is pretty easy to get, but inpatient acute care is a little bit harder to come by. However, the most saturated job market is outpatient PT, so if you have a pretty good resume and you are qualified I would say you have a pretty good chance at getting your dream position! When I was an intern, they had several per diem positions available in the acute care setting!! I really enjoyed my acute care internship, and if I had the opportunity to work there again, I totally would do it! I think that inpatient position gets a bad name sometimes, but honestly it was one of the most fun rotations for me!!!
