@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
Both professions are great, but of course I am more supportive of being a PT. The difference in schooling is a lot more to become a OCS PT tho. In order to become a PT, you need to have a bachelors degree (4-6 years), and graduate from a DPT program (2-3 years). Then after you finish your DPT, you need to do a residency for 1 year and then take the certification program. You can also bypass the residency and start working as a PT, but you need to accumulate like 2000 hours (or something like that) of outpatient ortho clinical hours before you are eligible to take the certification exam. Hope that helps!

You mentioned four different certifications that sports PT’s can, I think I know one for sure which is the CSCS through NSCA. I was wondering if you could shed some light of the was the other three are, thank you for the amazing videos as always!

Immortal Ice that’s amazing! I encourage you to keep your reason why you want to become a physical therapist and don’t lose that as you continue on your journey! Used to feel your passion. The strength and conditioning certification is a great one to have, however it is actually not one of the four different certifications you need to have for a sports residency. The certifications that you are required to have are actually more like emergency medical certs. Like Paramedic, ATC, EMT, and stuff

Hey thanks for your comment! I would first start out by working for free. That is pretty normal to work for free or volunteer when you start in the sports field. Maybe a good college or club team… you can look to start interning there

Hey, I appreciate the content you produce. I wanted to know, when you say direct patient care, does this include shadowing hours where I simply shadow and assist the PT if necessary? If not, does this direct patient care begin during PT school? Thanks again man and appreciate all the content you are giving out here. Best, -Matthew Stein

I still have plenty of time to decide, but when I originally started this journey I was thinking ortho because that's where my inspiration came from (I've blown out both my ACLs), but the more I learn the more I'm thinking I might want to go into pelvic floor. Hoping I'll be able to do clinical rotations in both fields in DPT school to help me figure it out! Pediatrics also sounds interesting, though...
@drjustinleedpt4 жыл бұрын
I think pelvic floor is amazing and we definitely need more of these PTs. You can be a part of the emerging pelvic floor PTs!!! Haha wow both your ACLS? Poor knees... I’m sorry you had to go through that. Did going through PT, inspire you to want to get into this profession?
@WildMustangShadowfax4 жыл бұрын
@@drjustinleedpt Yep, exactly that! I was working as a professional horse trainer and (although ironically the knees were not a horse-related injury) after I did the second one in I decided I wanted a long-term career that wasn't going to be so demanding on my body. And physical therapy seemed the way to go.
@drjustinleedpt4 жыл бұрын
@@WildMustangShadowfax hmmm well... in some cases PT can actually be a little demanding on the body. Like constantly using your hands and your trunk to hold limbs, stretch them and move things around. As a PT you have to be really careful on body mechanics because a lot of PT hurt themselves (ironically) due to poor mechanics and posture haha but if you wanted to talk more about this, id love to chat about it. I’m interested in sports physical therapy. I live in NYC and have been very indecisive on the career choice because I fear that the one I choose would not be to my liking and I don’t want to be stuck in a career that I don’t like. I want a mix of passion and great money. My career choices are Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitian, and Physical Therapy. Since I was 15 when I first started lifting weights (fell in love) I’ve been interested in fitness, health and nutrition and wanted to incorporate it all into a career and have my own private practice/business. Registered Dietitian is low pay and high college debt since by the time I finish my bachelors and start internship I would have to go back to get my masters (2024 mandatory to have masters in nutrition before going for internship and sit for exam) and that’s just not worth all the debt since the salary is 50-70k Nurse Practitioner is interesting but I’m having difficulty finding a way to incorporate nutrition, lifting weights and health into it. Struggle is real when I’m so indecisive 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭😭
@drjustinleedpt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and journey mark! I appreciate you being vulnerable and posting your thought progress. I think if you really want to focus on nutrition and create meal plans for people, then the only legal way you can do that is through RD. (A lot of fitness people out there will give customized meal plans for people and that’s absolutely wrong - please don’t be like one of those people.) If fitness is a big part of your life and you really want to preach exercise, PT is going to be your best way to go. But.. like you mentioned, the debt and income ratio is tough because it’s a lot of money for school. But.... a lot of PTs end up starting their own practice because you’ll be well equipped to have authority and impact due to your doctorate degree. As far a NP, it’s a good paying job for the debt, but their practice is medicine. Idk if that’s an area you want to get into. Of course you can educate with utilizing proper nutrition and exercise but that won’t be your main source of treatment options unlike PT or RD

@@drjustinleedpt I’m leaning more towards PT and specializing in sports. I’ve trained some friends here and there in the past and just overall fell in love with lifting weights and helping people feel better and more confident about themselves. Something I always appreciated and in the end I’m going to open my own private clinic regardless of the career choice lol. I don’t like working for others but for some time I’ll suck it up in order to gain experience and knowledge for myself

@@mrksmith467 That's awesome that you you've already got your feet wet with training some friends. That's how it all starts. And I 100% agree with you. Im planning to do my own thing too in the near future. But my mindset is this: I have to gain the experience FIRST before going off on my own - learning to make better clinical decisions and being exposed to a variety of patients and diagnosis. If you already have that mindset, you'll make it big in this field bro!

This is a really nice video. But i didn't understand the geriatric subspecialty, for example if an elderly patient had a stroke or parkinsons disease would that be the geriatric or neurology case? Or if an elderly patient have LBP is it the orthopedic or geriatric case? I cant distinguish between geriatric and the other.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but, for any PTA watching this, I believe our equivalent to these specializations would be completing a proficiency pathway after 2-3 years of working in a related field.
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
I actually had a question on that. Do you find it to be beneficial/worth it to get those proficiency pathways?
@gibby48343 жыл бұрын
@@drjustinleedpt Absolutely. Especially for the recognition and to be able to show clients your qualifications for the job. Maddie Bilbo ahhh a lot of people mix that up! it’s not necessarily a specialty because there isn’t a specialist certification for it. However, PTs can treat patients with vestibular issues.
