Interesting comparison, even if John Haack is "better" today, Ed Coan is still just as good because he did it so long ago. Today it's much easier to find information, and equipment is much cheaper. I think that's why Ed Coan was so crazy, because even today the best guys around still are close.
@mossoconnor4417

Not only did Coan set massive records, but he also did it at a time where even the heavyweights weren’t keeping up. He wasn’t just the strongest lifter in his class he was the strongest lifter overall, which I think has to be taken into consideration. Another thing which makes Coan’s legacy stick is that he competed at a very high level for a very long time, you can’t become GOAT if you are a flash in the pan. If John can stay on top for the next ten years and keep chipping away, which he has been doing, he will surpass Coan. I can’t remember the exact numbers but I think Coan benched 500 and over like 40 something times in competition, this should be a factor. How many competitions did he win even if he wasn’t setting a new record? I think this should play into the GOAT status, not just a all time world record. On top of this Coan held the deadlift record in four different weight classes at the same time if I’m not mistaken, and I think these records stood for close to 20 years. Not only did he set all these records, but he did it in full power meets, and when most of them were broken it was deadlift only. I think John Haack has the potential, but so did Jesse Norris and he is all but forgotten now, so he needs to stay on top for at least the next 10 years before he can be called GOAT
@littlethuggie
@littlethuggie 3 жыл бұрын
All that stuff is cool, but in a completely objective sport, where the biggest number literally wins, not sure if the other factors would make you the best ever. Longevity and other traits could make you the most dominant, but I want the one lifting the biggest numbers. Which still happens to be Ed by a small margin due to his squat.

I remember following Ed Coan very closely back in the day, as I, like him, started in the 165 lb class. He kept gaining weight, while I remained @ 165. Tough to compare. Training knowledge & nutrition are so different. I mean back when Coan did it, people were swilling down raw eggs Rocky style and Waddington had just become the first person to squat 1000 in a competition. Coan was moving unheard of numbers for that era. Now it seems like folks are putting up big numbers all the time. I think they're both studs for their respective competition eras. Belkin can challenge Haack, whereas Coan had no one close.

Mike Bridges outlifted Coan at 181, squatting 838, benching 529, and DL 737. Only 181 ever to hit 2100, and did so with old techniques, very minor squat suit( they WERE very limited, I wore them, I KNOW)and completely raw on bench and DL. Both guys would have been significantly better today using all current nutrition, etc. Coan was better than Hack, and Bridges was better than both at 181. Bridges retired very young and never went up to 198( until a comeback in his 50’s), let alone all the way to 242 like Coan. He would have undoubtedly hit close to broken 2200 if he’d continued into his late 30’s and even more if he’s been around today. He was the GOAT relative to talent, but Coan’s longer career and span of multiple weight classes have to make him the GOAT for an entire career.

It’s really worth mentioning that the 901 Ed pulled was on a stiff bar and with really short rest due to the round system. I think it’s rather impossible to compare but I admire the attempt to because it’s fun lol! I think as of now Ed is still the winner here. However John hasn’t had a lot of time on the dark side so I have a feeling if he goes up he will surpass Ed coan. I do wonder though how much modern training tactics and the changes in powerlifting would differ Ed Coan’s life long results. Great video! Fun topic

I remember having tried the same white wraps Coan had long time ago. They are in no way comparable to todays wraps and I would argue some of the sleeves around today provide more support than those wraps did. So I conclude it's a negligible factor. Considering powerlifting was less scientific in those days and still upcoming, without the wealth of knowledge of the internet, I would always consider Ed the GOAT.

I would say *Ed Coan is the greater one* of these two. Sure Coan had a powerlifting suit and knee wraps. But how much more did the Old School knee wraps added to the lift compare to todays Knee sleeves? And the Suits back then... Think it was Dave Tate and JM Blakley that talk about how they where amazed that some poppels back then could get ~70lbs/31kg on there bench with a shirt on. Also just look at the advantaged that Haack has today that Coan didn't. The amazing progress we have done in things like: + Nutritional Science + Supplementation + Importens of sleep + Exercise Science + Recovery + Programing + Steroids/PED + The availability of information through the internet. + Camera and software to track barpath and barspeed in slowmotion etc. + Quality of equipment like plates, barbell, floors, shoes, wraps, sleeves etc. + Also what occupation you needed to have back then. Today you can survive on income from just social media or sponsors. You don't need to work +40h/week while your traying to break the world record. Surely missed somethings, but we all get my point. I wonder *if/how* much better would Ed Coan be if he had the same availability of information as Haack have? Don't know, but I belive Coan would have done better he was 35 today. Just like JM Blakley said: *_"They are lucky I am not 35 now, I would have beaten them now. No matter what the lift was."_*
@nickcollins9170
@nickcollins9170 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the appeal to "were know more today" is kinda a cop out bc its impossible to factor that in, and honestly a lot of the things you mention just haven't really improved that much practically today compared to when Ed was lifting. It was not revolutionary. And Ed used a single ply suite and wraps. You can say it was like todays knee sleeves and singlets but thats laughable. Ed admitted to not confuse ppl, he wore the suite and wraps bc he undeniably got weight out of it. His squat would have dipped substantially if he was in SBD knee sleeves and a SBD singlet. And no for JM Blakely to make a comment like that it shows he really doesn't know what he's talking about. Thats just unfounded wishful thinking. Powerlifting is one of the sports that hasn't changed a ton since the 90s unlike other sports that have undergone a ton a changes. You are seriously overrating the amount of change thats taken place and how much those changes affect the athletes.
@TheRobinL
@TheRobinL 4 жыл бұрын
@@nickcollins9170 *_"were know more today is kinda a cop out bc its impossible to factor that in"_* So because *you think* it is impossible to factor it in, you just gonna disregarded? If all the factors I listed has almost NO impact on the athletes. Then what is your explanation that records are getting beaten over and over and over again in every sport on earth? I'm assume your not going to claim that athletes back in the 80 and 90 where just lazy and not hard working enough. So what is the reason in your minde? . *_"and honestly a lot of the things you mention just haven't really improved that much"_* I do not know what to tell you more then I think you are a bit uneducated on the subject if you think that almost nothing has improved in Nutritional Science , Supplementation, Exercise Science, Recovery , Programing, Steroids, PED and so on in the last 30 years. Your statement is simply not true. . *_"Ed used a single ply suite and wraps. You can say it was like todays knee sleeves and singlets but thats laughable."_* I *never claimed* that a suit and wraps where like todays sleeves and singlet. I even said "how much more did the Old School knee wraps added...". But there are many peoples out there that believes a single ply squat suit is the same as a squat suit from the 90s. And there is big, big difference between todays singly ply and the single play from 90s. And also, Eds best deadlift was without a suit if I am not mistaking. Just a singlet and a belt. So you can only claim he got help from a suit in 2 out of 3 lifts. . *_"he wore the suite and wraps bc he undeniably got weight out of it"_* Yeah. I know. My point is *how much* more? Just like wearing belt, knee sleeves, squat/deadlift shoes, wrist wraps etc is adding kg/lbs to your total. How much more? We don't know exactly but we do know is does, IF it did not. Nobody would waste there time wearing it. . *_"JM Blakely to make a comment like that it shows he really doesn't know what he's talking about."_* So I ask you again. If it has almost nothing to do with what I said. Why are record being broken in every sport around the world? . *_" Powerlifting is one of the sports that hasn't changed a ton since the 90s unlike other sports that have undergone a ton a changes"_* What ton of changes has Football, Hockey, Basketball, track and field etc. undergone that Powerlifting hasn't? . And I would say you are seriously underrating the amount these change affect the athletes. If it's not the things I talk about. What is the reason records are being broken all the time in every sport on earth. I don't think you gonna tell Ed Coan he was just lazy and did not work hard enough, or did not have the right mentality. I also don't think you gonna pretend humans as a species have all of a sudden in just 30 years super evolve to these strength monsters. So in your minde, what is the reason for this?

One important factor about Coan using a suit and knee wraps is Coan was one of the least dependent upon equipment of those of that era. Coan would wrap his own knees instead of getting someone else to do it getting it much tighter. Coan would easily put up his own straps as his suit was comparatively very loose. It was always a pretty well known fact it was really difficult to get Coan to start trying to wear a new lifting suit. You can even hear in an interview with him and Steve Goggins where Goggins is laughing and telling how John Inzer would send him suits but he couldn't get Ed to ever wear them. He just kept using and patching up his old loose suits. Point being the suits and wraps of that era did add to the squat but the help Ed got from them was definitely on the low end. He wasn't real dependent upon it as others were to gain the edge. Just a beast!

So you're looking at a 60 - 70 lb increase in your squat fully equipped back in Coan's era. One-ply bench shirts also enhanced your bench by a meager 30 lbs or so, nothing like the 200 lb plus bench shirts of today.

Peak Ed Coan was much stronger mainly because of the squat. Hack is a better bencher pound for pound by a slight bit and I’d say they’re pretty equal in deadlifting capabilities. Pound for pound hacks 2000 raw total at 181 is more impressive than Coan’s 2400+ total single ply total at 220, however Overall Coan was stronger.

Ed Coan did his lifting in the 80s before the internet. You recently posted a video of a 123 lb woman conventional deadlifting 530 lbs ! That's crazy strong and is only possible because of the access to information we have now. Haack is a great lifter and would have been good if he lifted in the 80s, but not as good as he is now. Ed Coan is the GOAT. Love your channel.

This is my Favourite powerlifting channel out of all of them, and I like that distinct voice. There is nothing more irritating than the other one that sounds like a 10 year old excited child that literally just puts up any old video!

The old guys will say Coan and the young guys will say Haack. For me even an objective head to head comparison such as this doesn't seem to do justice to Coan's sheer dominance for those who were around in that era. Unbelievable numbers for years, various weight classes, always great form, hardly missing lifts, often looking effortless, very little emphasis on equipment in an era where everyone did, great physique.

Idgaf about his voice. English is most KZbin viewers' second language, we all have an accent, however thin or thick. As someone who's passionate about powerlifting, my only concern is the quality of the content and this guy's two channels (Strength Central and Lifting Vault) are unique in that aspect, he's really knowledgeable in regards to the sport and provides great commentary. Don't listen to the haters! Pd: I'm good with accents but I can't really tell where he's from? Care to advice, Strength Central/Lifting Vault?
