What the? If your garage door opener already has Wi-Fi, it should be able to be HomeKit compatible with just a software update. I think Chamberlain or whatever company makes MyQ is just milking their customers for every penny they can. Also, that thing is HUGE! How is it bigger than an Apple TV when all it does is add HomeKit support?

You actually have it backwards: instead of “milking” their customers for HomeKit support that only a small percentage of customers will use Chamberlain lowers the price for everybody. Only the people that want HomeKit support need the additional hardware. This lowers the price for the majority of consumers - it’s common practice for appliance manufacturers to have non-HomeKit versions that are less expensive. When it comes to garage door openers (and door locks) HomeKit has a higher level of security to avoid unauthorized entry into your house - that costs more than less secure Google Home or Alexa

@@drdrew3 Meanwhile, I bought a tiny Meross garage door opener kit for $40 on Amazon that supports HomeKit, Google Home, and Alexa with no paid subscriptions required. Had it installed for about a year now and it’s been rock solid. MyQ remains a ripoff for a lousy product.

NOPE. Unless you buy a MEROSS garage door opener. Just because anything has WIFI doesn't mean it's Homekit compatible. They can make it exclusively compatible with Google or Alexa ONLY. AND YES - they're dumb to not make it homekit compatible

I was saying Chamberlain should have been able to make the device support HomeKit without the need for purchasing separate hardware. Since it was already a smart device with Wi-Fi, all it would have needed was the right software to support HomeKit. Chamberlain probably could have released an update to add HomeKit support, but instead they decided to rip off their customers and make them buy a whole new thing.

I plugged it in and have the blue flashing light, can even see the MyQ show up under available wifi networks but the MyQ app doesn’t see there’s any discoverable devices (says “None”). Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Can the original MYQ hub, that works with the MYQ app, and that plugs into the router be removed once this is set up? Maybe it should be removed before setting this up. Thanks.

Does the door stop when you press that homekit button again? I bet it doesn't. So you lose the ability to keep the door partially open as with a traditional clicker.

You didn't mention this but the best part of using this device and adding HomeKit Support is that with iOS13 and CarPlay it will enable the siri suggestions to pop up a garage door icon on your car's touch screen when leaving and arriving at home. I'm using this now with the beta and it's awesome. Probably works 9/10 times.

@@StrifePulse No, I didn't have a hub at my house at the time, so I think that caused the problem. Now, after buying Apple TV and HomePod mini, it's working 95% of the time now.

I have two of these for two garages each with 3 doors. One bridge works three of them and one for the other 3. All on the same network with excellent WiFi. At one garage, it only opens the doors with HomeKit but will never close them. I get an immediate no response message. Very frustrating!

Educated guess is that Apple HomeKit costs then a licensing fee, and they dont want to bundle this in to drive up costs when not everyone will want/use that. Therefore, instead of adding the money to the base model, they are charging it as an upgrade. This is pretty standard practice when you are talking about proprietary protocols like Apple's HomeKit.

You need another appliance because wifi garage door openers have only been widely available a relatively short amount of time. So most currently installed does aren’t wifi capable and need to be retrofitted. Additionally most consumers just use a clicker remote and don’t care to pay extra for a wifi opener they don’t need. So Chamberlain is able to keep the base model price low and only those who want wifi (or HomeKit) pay the upgrade for the added features. All the extra bells and whistles come with a cost - pretty much standard in electronics - not a price fixing conspiracy as suggested by so many in these comments. Lol

Is there anyway to bypass the light flashing and beeping when closing via HomeKit? I know I could remove the lightbulbs, but then I’d be fumbling in the dark at times in the garage.

No. You can’t disconnect the flashing lights and beeping alerts because it’s a national safety code. Once a few kids got crushed by garage doors operated remotely this standard was adopted. Apparently people were bypassing the infrared sensors so a second fail safe was needed. Just dumb and dangerous to subvert safety for convenience

The beeping sound and flashing light is for when you close it remotely, it warns the people that might be in the garage that the door is closing. Yeah, a bit annoying but I also think it is a must especially families with children or elderly.

Give the Insignia Wi-Fi Garage Door Controller a review. It was much simpler to set up in my opinion over the chamberlain. It’s $50 now but I snagged it on sell I think for under $40 last year. No app to deal with the whole setup is through Apple HomeKit.

That’s all I wanted when I bought MyQ... just trip a circuit via HomeKit... not requiring a whole new ecosystem and corporate computers to open and close a door... I will be looking into other options than MyQ

The Insignia model hasn’t been manufactured for several years and is no longer supported or updated by Best Buy. You were able to get it cheap because they were clearing the remaining inventory.

You'll only need ONE homebridge device. You'll program all your doors through the Apple Home-kit and MyQ app and it will receive the signal through the homebridge

I’ll start by saying yes when it works it does an OK job of opening the garage door, half the time Siri is not able to execute the commands to begin with. My biggest issue I have is how complicated the set up is it should be a lot smoother i’ve set three of these up each time they have kicked my ass and wasted about an hour of my time to get set up. It’s funny because if you add the HomeBridge directly through Apple Home app it is a much smoother process and workflow. Unfortunately I have not successfully found a way to connect the garage doors after only adding the home bridge through HomeKit. I think this unit would be great for older Wi-Fi enabled garage door opener‘s but I think next GEN garage door opener‘s must have this built into the garage door opener it would make the process much easier adding one device rather than having to add a bridge

Why does the bridge have to be near the garage door opener? Why can't I plug it inside the house say, near my apple TV at the back of my TV where no one can see it? MUST it be close to the garage door opener outside the house inside the garage? It's wireless. It should be able to be located inside the HOUSE!

Tanan Baboo If you purchase a new Control Panel (like an 889LM) and install that, you don’t need the hub. That’s assuming your opener is compatible. I installed two 888LMs (888s have been replaced by Liftmaster and are now 889s) and a bridge about a year ago. That’s all I needed to update my Liftmaster openers with Red “Learn” buttons. They work great!

I am quite annoyed by this. I refuse to spend $70 on hardware to make this happen. The app in the phone can do it, so why do we need a piece of hardware. Why can't Apple HomeKit access the app, to open the door, or some other software solution. Seems like a cashgrab from Chamberlain to make this happen. Incredibly ticked about it.

Wifi (and HomeKit) “cost extra” because only a tiny fraction of consumers want this feature. Most folks just use the clicker remote or the HomeLink built into their vehicle. Chamberlain keeps the base model low for the masses. Only the nerds and early adopters pay a little extra for added wifi feature or HomeKit. The added hardware and licensing fees only get paid by the few power users and the price is lower for the rest of us - it’s standard practice in consumer electronics for high end technology to cost a bit more. Don’t expect that to change ever

Just wanted to give my 2 cents. As of May 2020 MyQ app is not requiring a paid subscription to integrate with google home. It gives a free 1 year subscription. Once you add it to google home you can use Siri to operate your Garage door through My Shortcuts app. HOWEVER due to security concerns MyQ/google have disabled the feature to use your voice to open your garage door. The idea is that they don’t want someone to open your garage thru your google home. You can still close the door but not open it.

I installed the home bridge a couple of weeks ago and although it works as described, it's a pointless ~$85 box that HomeKit blocks with a push notification that asks you every single time if you want it to run the automation. The answer is.....YESSSS!!! I WANT YOU TO AUTOMATICALLY RUN THE DAMN AUTOMATION EVERY TIME WHEN I'M COMING HOME OR LEAVING!!! I've yet to find a single way to bypass the HK run notification so I'm planning to send back the unit as it's worthless to me for the purpose I bought it for which was to have my garage automatically open/close when I'm about a block or so from my house when on my motorbike so I don't have to worry about trying to push buttons with gloves on. This worthless box does nothing to solve that and HK blocks it with no work around solution to tell it to just run the automation w/o me having to actually slide the notification on my lock screen and hit run....then wait for the delay... If you try to use Siri to open it, it'll bring up the keypad on your lock screen and tell you that you have to unlock your phone first.....GGGRRRR.... IMO DO NOT BUY this worthless box that Chamberlain/Liftmaster could just make compatible with the WiFi already installed in my garage door opener!

Just use a cheap smartplug, connect it with an NO relay and connect to the push button (wire) of the garage opener. Combinate it with a cheap Windows sensor to know if the garage is open or closed. Works great with all the homekit automatisation rules (ex. Coming home). Works with any Already installed garage opener and Every cheap one. 😉
