Light up your Tool Box Drawers & Top Chest

It's cheap and easy to add some lights to your toolbox, under cabinets, etc.

LED LIGHT STRIP INFO, READ:
There are a lot of bait and switch tactics with LED light strips. A few things you want are:
5050 LEDs, not 3528 as they are smaller and put out less light
Make sure it's 600 LEDs per 10meters (300per 5 meters/16.4ft) and not sparsely spaced leds
Make sure it comes with a power supply
TEST everything before you spend the time running the light strips.
Q&A
-How much did I use? I used all but 1 foot of LED strip from a 32.8ft set.
-How much power does it draw? It consumes around 45 watts with White light and drops when only one color is illuminated. Cycling colors seam to be steady around 20 watts.
-Can I unplug it? The controller remembers your last setting so you could put it on a timer or powered light switch and it will resume the mode/color you last has set.
-How long did it take me to do this? Adding lights to just the top took under an hour. The rest of the box timed in around 10 hours of work(so much soldering).
-Would I do it again? YES
-Does Ginger like my tool box? She loves it.

For almost 30 years I had a rough time in the winter seeing my tools in the box because of Fluorescent tubes and their limited amount of light when cold. Last year I switched to LEDs and have been happy ever since.

I just swapped out my last twin 8foot Florescent tube for LEDs. My only complaint is they are too directional and don't spread light evenly everywhere. But I'm happy with them.

Reed switches so it comes on when you open the drawers I’ve found cheap led torches with rechargable batteries are a great simpler alternative if you don’t want to hardwire or just need some light. Magnetic pen lights with a cob led. My mobile box spends 95% of its time away from a power outlet.

Yeah, I have a handful of those COB pen lights(they're bright). I actually rigged two of those up with a micro switch in my gun safe; so when the handle opens they both turn on. They sell quit a few motion activated ones these days that just stick on the inside of the drawer. I just didn't want to deal with swapping out a million little button cell batteries. But I would have been done in 10 minutes. I could run this entire system off a 12volt car battery for a week or two. I did contemplate reed and micro switches but the placement of my lights made them double as an accent feature, so leaving them on all the time made sense.

that is what I did with my US General 5 drawer tool cart but i only did the last drawer on the bottom and I used a Milwaukee 12v battery to run it off of and it worked well however I've been trying to brainstorm an idea on how how I can do it to all the drawers with different magnetic reed switches

I considered doing a power buss beside the drawers and contacts on each drawer that would connect with the buss when the drawers open. That also might not be durable... But it's the principle I'm using for my under garage door light and it works great so far with that. I've been loving these 5050 led strips lately.

I had a few spots where my hot glue didn't bond super well so I just used some "Shoe Goo" to stick it better. Overall nothing has went wrong though.

I've actually really enjoyed this. I did have some hot glue pop off in a few locations but that was easily fixed. I don't think I would change anything but do wish the LEDs were brighter at times.
